    First swine flu case of 2015 reported in Delhi

    Delhi reported the year's first case of swine flu, taking the figure to 39 since last year, health official said.
    According to the health department, a 40-year-old woman from Bawana in northwest Delhi was confirmed of suffering from swine flu.
    "Her samples were sent to the National Center for Disease Control and it was confirmed that she has been affected by the H1N1 (swine flu) virus," Charan Singh, an officer at the Delhi health department, told IANS.
    The patient has been admitted to Maharishi Valmiki Government Hospital in the area.
    The fresh case comes after three cases each were reported Tuesday and Wednesday here.
    A 51-year-old woman died due to swine flu Dec 26 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here.

    Two fresh cases of swine flu reported in Delhi


    According to the Delhi health department, the two cases were of a 35-year-old female from south Delhi's CR Park area and another 53-year-old woman from Chattarpur area.

    "The samples of both the women have been confirmed at the National Centre for Disease Control Friday and they have been admitted to separate hospitals," health department official Charan Singh told IANS.

    The patient from CR Park was admitted to a private hospital in Kalkaji while the woman from Chattarpur was admitted to Fortis healthcare in Vasant Kunj.

    A 51-year-old woman died Dec 26 due to swine flu at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here.

    With the two new cases, the number of swine flu cases in the national capital have reached 41 since last year.

While the one that occurred on December 24 was confirmed by the health ministry?s National Centre for Disease Control, the death of a woman in Delhi?s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Friday has been confirmed by private laboratory Dr Lal Pathlabs. She had died after a multiple organ failure.
According to official data, Delhi has had 43 confirmed cases of swine flu this season, five of them reported since January 1. Two of them have been confirmed by National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) while the others were confirmed by private laboratory Dr Lal Pathlabs.

5 fresh cases of Swine Flu reported in Delhi

Five new cases of swine flu have been reported in Delhi taking the total figure to 14 so far in this season. Three women and two men, all resident of city, have tested positive for H1N1 (swine flu) virus.

Additional Director in Health Department Charan Singh said that the two patients are undergoing treatment at RML hospital while one is admitted in a private nursing home in the national capital. The remaining two patients are undergoing self-treatment.

Central government has already directed its officials and state governments to stock emergency requirements of medicine Oseltamivir to deal with Swine flu Influenza. Health Minister J P Nadda also asked the hospitals to ensure adequate quantity of personal protective equipment for health care workers.

The national capital on Wednesday reported the first swine flu death of the year with a 42-year-old woman from Uttam Nagar succumbing to the H1N1 virus at a private hospital here.

Meanwhile, eight fresh cases of swine flu were reported on Thursday taking the total figure to 31 this year. The fresh cases include four men and four women living in areas such as east Delhi?s Preet Vihar and Laxmi Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Punjabi Bagh and Azadpur.
?Of the eight cases, four patients have been admitted to private hospitals. The other four are in Safdarjung hospital, Lady Hardinge and Ram Manohar Lohia hospitals. They have all tested positive for H1N1 at authorized laboratories,? he added.
A 42-year-old woman from Uttam Nagar and a 39-year-old man from Faridabad died of swine flu on Tuesday night. Earlier, a 51-year-old woman died of the disease on December 24 at Sir Ganga Ram hospital.

The fresh cases included the case of a woman doctor from the city?s Lady Hardinge hospital. Following the deaths, the NCDC and the city health department on Wednesday held a meeting to review the situation.
?Training started today (on Wednesday) onwards for health staff at every government and selected private hospitals on how to handle swine flu cases,? said Charan Singh, an official of the Delhi health department.
?Health secretary S.C.L. Das has also decided to review the training sessions at every hospital on Thursday onwards, both by visiting the hospitals and also over the phone,? he said.

The Medical Superintendent of R.M.L. Hospital, Dr. H.K. Kar, on Friday said twelve cases of swine flu have been suspected so far out of which three were found positive, two have been discharged and one died.
"So far, we have admitted 12 suspected cases of Swine flu infection, out of which three were found positive, two have been discharged and one died," Dr. Kar said.
"The most important part is, this is just like any type of influenza infection. So, whenever you have developed any fever, cough or nasal discharge then you should isolate yourself at home and observe yourself. Normally, fever disappears without any treatment also. That we call as Category A," he added.
"Category B- the fever persists for some time more, may be more than seven days. In those cases, you must do the investigation and if it found positive then we give the treatment. The most important thing is that the patient should be isolated at home," he added.

Swine flu claimed a third life in the national capital today, but the Health department insisted there was nothing to panic and asked people to remain vigilant.

Five more persons tested positive for the virus, taking the number of cases to 36 in January alone, four more than the total number of cases recorded in entire 2014 in the city.

A 38-year-old woman from Uttam Nagar succumbed to the H1N1 virus at Ram Manohar Lohiya (RML) hospital in the wee hours.

"She was brought to the hospital in an extremely critical condition on January 4 and was on ventilator support. She died early this morning," H K Kar, medical superintendent of RML hospital, said.

The figures, according to health experts, are alarming as in January alone a total 36 cases of swine flu have been reported in Delhi whereas in entire 2014, only 32 positive cases were reported from the national capital.

The new cases are of a 77-year-old man (Laxmi Nagar) and a two-year-old boy (Mehrauli), both undergoing treatment at RML.

NEW DELHI: A spate of swine flu deaths in Delhi and National Capital Region over the last two weeks has led to panic among people.

On Thursday, too, officials said a middle-aged man from east Delhi died from the viral infection at a city private hospital, taking the total number of deaths due to swine flu in NCR to four. Two of these patients are from Delhi and one each from Ghaziabad and Faridabad, respectively.

"The total number of swine flu cases in Delhi this winter has now reached 68. Of them, 30 cases have been reported this year. There have been only two deaths in Delhi," Dr Charan Singh, additional director in charge of public health, Delhi government, said. He said 22 state-run and private hospitals have been designated for treatment for the viral infection and, if required, more hospitals will be directed to make arrangements for isolation and treatment of such patients.

Three fresh cases of swine flu were reported in the Capital on Sunday. So far, there have been five deaths this season in Delhi NCR.

With Sunday?s cases, the total number of swine flu cases have gone up to 43 this season, said a health department official. The three fresh cases of swine flu were reported from Kalkaji, Gulmohar Park and New Delhi area.

?One 78-year-old female from Gulmohar Park and a 31-year-old male from Kalkaji who tested positive for the virus are recuperating at home. Another 74-year-old female from New Delhi area has been admitted to Max Hospital,? said Dr Charan Singh, nodal officer for swine flu, Delhi government.

A 38-year-old woman admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in a critical condition succumbed to the H1N1 virus on Friday. She was a resident of Uttam Nagar.

[h=1]Sixth swine flu death, 7 new cases reported in Delhi alone[/h] A 44-year-old woman, suffering from swine flu for over a week, has become the sixth fatality due to the disease in the national capital, a health official said on Monday, taking the cases to seven in all and the total to 51 since one year.
?The patient succumbed to the disease Sunday evening. Her complications also aggravated because she was suffering from uncontrollable diabetes,? health department official Charan Singh told IANS.
He said the woman was a resident of west Delhi and was admitted to a private hospital in the area. Her samples were confirmed at a Delhi government-authorised laboratory.
The five people who earlier died were two from west Delhi aged 38 and 42, a 30-year-old man from east Delhi, a 39-year-old man from Faridabad in neighbouring Haryana and a 51-year-old woman from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh who were admitted in city hospitals.
The seven new cases in the capital have been reported from Dakshinpuri, Brijpuri, Patel Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Kirti Nagar, Defence Colony and Siddharth Extension.
They have been admitted to Delhi government authorised hospitals, the official said.

Ten fresh cases of swine flu were reported in the capital on Tuesday. Among those infected with the virus is a 19-month-old baby in south Delhi. The baby is the youngest one in this season to be infected with the H1N1 flu virus.

?With 10 fresh cases on Tuesday, the total number of swine flu cases this season has gone up to 60 in Delhi. The 19-month-old female child is the youngest to be infected with swine flu this season. The baby, a resident of Freedom Fighter Enclave, Neb Sarai, is recuperating at home. The sample was tested at SRL Diagnostics,? said Dr Charan Singh, nodal officer of swine flu, Delhi government.

A 35-year-old woman, also a resident of Freedom Fighter Enclave, and a 47-year-old man of South Extension are recuperating at home, he added.

The others affected with swine flu virus are a 55-year-old man, a 40-year-old man, a 29-year-old man, a 33-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman. These include residents of Ashram, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Neb Sarai and Khirki Extension. Another 31-year-old woman residing in Lady Hardinge campus has been admitted to the Lady Hardinge Medical College.

Panel says none died of swine flu in Delhi

A expert committee formed by the Delhi Directorate of Health Services claimed that medically no death by swine flu has been reported in city.
The committee said that all the four patients, who had died to swine flu were suffering from other diseases which were the primary reason behind their deaths along with the H1N1 virus. A member of committee said that technically, in medical terms, no death has been reported primarily due to swine flu.
Six fresh cases of swine flu were reported in the national capital on Thursday, taking the total number of swine flu patients to 78.

Comment: Here we go again. In reality confirmed deaths are the tip of the iceberg. There are likely millions of cases of influenza in India each year with tens of thousands of related fatalities perhaps more. H1N1 will cause some proportion of those. Treating H1N1 as the dreaded "swine flu" ignores the reality of influenza in India. India urgently needs a strong surveillance program to compile locally produced confirmed case figures with ARI and ILI reports to provide a more accurate picture of Influenza outbreaks. A stronger emphasis on influenza and pneumonia vaccination might help. However, since the Government recently cut the Health budget by 20%, this is unlikely to happen. - Ro
 
[h=1]20 fresh cases of swine flu in Delhi[/h]
NEW DELHI: The national capital on Friday reported 20 fresh cases of swine flu taking the total figure to 98 so far this year.

Three persons have so far died due to swine flu in the city.

"Fifty per cent cases today (20 positive out of 163 tests) as compared to yesterday (6 positive out of 25 tests). We have already nominated 11 District Surveillance Officers (DSOs) who have taken stocks of medicines and are checking that standard operating procedures for treatment of HINI cases are being followed by designated 22 hospitals," said R N Das, a member of the five-member constituted by Health department to review swine flu cases.

Government is also in the process of adding four more laboratories, two each in private and government sectors to the existing eight laboratories (five private and three government), where one can get themselves tested for H1N1.

?There are 10 positive cases out of 108 tests conducted on Saturday, which is 50 per cent less as compared to Friday when 20 cases had tested positive out of the 163 tests conducted. No swine-flu related deaths have been reported on Saturday,? N Das, member of the committee constituted by Health department to review swine flu cases, said.
Three persons have so far died due to the H1N1 virus in the city. Health Ministry officials said there was no cause for panic and the infection would diminish once mercury levels rise.
