Czech Coronavirus Cases Show Biggest Rise in Four Weeks, Infections Hit Coal Mine

PRAGUE — The Czech Republic reported its biggest daily rise in new coronavirus cases in four weeks, climbing by 111 to an overall total to 8,594 as of Tuesday morning.

The health ministry also reported two new deaths, putting the toll from the virus at 299 in the central European country.
..
The rise is partly due to an outbreak reported by state-owned coal miner OKD at its Darkov mine near the eastern town of Karvina, close to the Polish border, Czech Radio reported.

The radio said 53 cases had been confirmed among 860 miners tested by Monday evening.

PRAGUE — The National Museum in Prague has put on display the most visible symbol of the Czech Republic's response to the coronavirus - face masks.

The Czech government made wearing masks in public mandatory in mid-March. Amid an initial shortage, many people started making their own masks.

Some of the masks featured in the museum exhibition were made by leading fashion designers, while others are the handiwork of creative home crafters.
....
The Czech Republic had a total of 9,103 confirmed virus cases and 317 deaths as of Thursday. The mandatory mask-wearing and other early virus-prevention measures are thought to have limited infections in the country compared to other parts of Europe.
