Bird flu has returned to the Czech Republic, the first outbreak this year is in Českobudějovick
1/2/2024 3:39 p.m

ČESKOBUDĚJOVICKO - A new outbreak of bird flu has been confirmed in the Czech Republic after almost eight months. It is located in a small poultry farm in Horní Slovenice in Českobudějovick. The occurrence of the infection in the farm was confirmed by an examination at the State Veterinary Institute in Prague.

There were originally 30 hens in the farm. Through a private veterinarian, the breeder reported the death of ten hens to the Regional Veterinary Administration for the South Bohemian Region (KVS) on Sunday, December 31. Veterinary inspectors started an investigation at the farm, took preliminary measures and sent the dead animals to the SVÚ for examination. The hens at the time of inspection showed clinical signs of the disease and reduced laying. An investigation at SVÚ Prague today confirmed bird flu H5N1. Poultry in the aforementioned farm is raised in a brick chicken coop with a run without direct contact with wild birds. However, there are numerous ponds in the vicinity with a large number of wild ducks.

"The remaining poultry in the farm will be euthanized and subsequently disinfected by a specialist company. As in the case of last year's outbreak in Kladno, the Regional Veterinary Administration will use the opportunity given by the recent change in European legislation. They will not define closed zones around the affected breeding and will not declare emergency veterinary measures in them," said the central director of the State Veterinary Administration, Zbyněk Semerád.

The affected small farm fulfills the conditions for using the exception. The main one is the fact that the breeder does not market the poultry or its products, which means that the risk of spreading the disease from the breeding is minimal. In addition, the Czech Republic should not lose the official status of a bird flu-free country, which is important for the international trade in poultry and its products. The regional veterinary administration will closely monitor the infectious situation in the area. In cooperation with the fire brigade, he will inform breeders and municipalities in the area...

Veterinarians discovered another outbreak of avian flu in a small-breed poultry farm in Nebílovy in southern Pilsen

Today, 11:02 an outbreak of bird flu was discovered by veterinarians in a small poultry farm in the village of Nebílovy in the south of Pilsen. The breeder reported the sudden death of five out of 20 hens on Friday. There was another poultry in the farm that showed symptoms of the disease. She will then be put to death. Since the beginning of this year, 11 outbreaks of bird flu have been confirmed in the Czech Republic, all in non-commercial small farms.

"As part of the on-site investigation, veterinary inspectors took samples and sent them to the State Veterinary Institute in Prague for examination. This subsequently confirmed H5N1 bird flu," said Petr Majer for the press department of the State Veterinary Administration (SVS).

In the affected areas, closed zones will not be defined or extraordinary veterinary measures will be announced. One of the conditions for using this exemption given by European legislation is that the breeder does not market the poultry or its products, which means that the risk of spreading the disease from the breeding is minimal. Nevertheless, the State Veterinary Administration appeals to poultry and bird breeders in the Czech Republic to observe the rules of biological safety and to monitor the health status of farms...

A new outbreak of bird flu in a small poultry farm in the Czech Republic with serial number 23 is located in the village of Pištín in the district of České Budějovice in the South Bohemian Region. The breeder informed the regional veterinary administration about the death of five out of 14 poultry (hens, ducks, geese). Veterinary inspectors carried out an investigation on the spot, during which they took samples, which they sent for examination to the State Veterinary Institute. This subsequently confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in breeding. Measures were taken on site to prevent the spread of disease from breeding. The remaining pieces were spent. In addition to the mentioned poultry, there are also five pairs of pigeons and two cockatiels in an outdoor aviary in a separate part of the farm. These birds will not be euthanized, however, preventive and sanitary measures have been put in place to avoid transmission of the disease to said birds. To date, highly pathogenic bird flu has been confirmed in five commercial farms in addition to 23 small farms.

News about the infectious situation

13/09/2024

An outbreak of bird flu in commercial poultry farming was confirmed in the Czech Republic. The farm is located in the village of Martinice, part of the town of Březnice in the Příbram region. The breeder reported the death of more than five dozen of the 700 geese he kept. There are also 300 hens in the farm. Veterinary inspectors conducted an on-site investigation, took samples and sent them to the State Veterinary Institute for examination. Examination today confirmed bird flu of subtype H5N1 in all samples. Measures were taken on site to prevent the spread of disease from breeding. The remaining pieces will be spent. A three-kilometer protective zone and a ten-kilometer surveillance zone will be defined around the outbreak. Extraordinary veterinary measures will be announced in these zones, which will, among other things, limit the movement of poultry, inventories of poultry farms will be carried out, and the organization of mass events such as stock exchanges or bird exhibitions will be prohibited. This is the first outbreak of bird flu in commercial poultry farming in the Czech Republic since mid-February this year. The Czech Republic will thereby lose its status as a country free from this disease.

Over the course of this calendar year, a total of six outbreaks in commercial poultry farms and 24 outbreaks in captive bird farms (small poultry farms) were gradually confirmed in the Czech Republic. Since May 2024, the Czech Republic has officially received the status of a free country from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), without the occurrence of this disease in commercial poultry farms.
