Two new coronavirus cases emerged on Friday involving one person who was recently repatriated to Cyprus and another who took the initiative to get tested for the virus, a Health Ministry announcement confirmed.

The new cases raised total known cases in the Republic of Cyprus to 960. They emerged after 1,836 samples were checked for the virus.

On Friday, there were four coronavirus patients being treated at the Famagusta District Hospital, while three more were intubated at the Nicosia General Hospital ICU

Five new coronavirus cases were announced by the health ministry on Friday, bringing the total to 980.

The new cases emerged from a total of 1,289 tests processed on Friday.

All cases were related to travel and repatriation.

Two cases came from individuals, who arrived from the UK a day apart from each other on June 7 and 8.

The third case emerged from contact tracing, and is an individual, who was in contact with the confirmed case yesterday.

There was one case from repatriated individuals, and another from vulnerable groups, the ministry said.

The repatriated individual returned from Doha, Qatar, while the case from vulnerable groups, was also an individual who returned from the UK and was tested on the recommendation of his personal doctor.

The case from the vulnerable groups initially tested negative on their return from the UK at the start of June, but then presented symptoms and was told by their doctor to be tested.

Another two people, of whom one pregnant woman, have tested positive for coronavirus after a total of 1067 tests, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

The second case was a patient who took the test before going into surgery.

It said the two new cases were reported from 172 tests of special groups through public health clinics and from referrals through personal doctors.

This brings the total number of cases in Cyprus to 990.

The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus has already spread to 215 countries with 10.572.996 infected. The disease is caused by a new virus that had not been detected in humans until a few months ago.

In Cyprus the figures released by the Ministry of Health record a total of 998, which marks an increase of 2 new cases compared to the previous day.

A soccer player is among the three confirmed cases of COVID-19 detected out of a total of 1,247 laboratory diagnoses, according to the data announced on Friday by the Epidemiological Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Health.

According to the latest data, the total number of positive cases rose to 1,013.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Health says that two out of the three cases announced on Friday were detected after analyzing a total of 219 samples taken from private initiative. One of two persons tested positive for COVID-19 has travelled recently.

In particular, one is a Polish national and a permanent resident of Cyprus, who showed symptoms and was subjected to an examination and the other one is a Serbian soccer player announced by APOEL, who came to Cyprus from Serbia on 7 July

Cyprus health authorities announced five new coronavirus cases on Saturday, following three days in a row with double digit numbers, most of which worryingly concentrated in Limassol.

Five more cases were reported with delay on Saturday morning that arose from the Friday results, adjusting that number from 25 reported initially to 30.

The health ministry said that the new cases, all in Limassol, were discovered from a total 1,997 lab tests, bringing the number of all SARS-CoV-2 infections in Cyprus to 1,124.

Four of the five new infections resulted from contact tracing related known cases, and one from testing at a public hospital.

Saturday also saw the implementation of stricter social distancing and personal hygiene rules, including the obligatory wearing of masks when entering any indoor facility, including children from age 6 upwards, otherwise face a €300 fine.
