Cuba without new coronavirus cases for the first time since the start of the pandemic

Cuba woke up this Monday without new cases of daily coronavirus contagion for the first time since registering its three initial Covid-19 patients in mid-March, the Health Ministry reported.

"A very favorable day, we do not have confirmed cases, we do not have serious cases, we do not have critical cases," announced the chief of Epidemiology of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), Rodolfo Dur?n, at the start of his usual virtual press conference to inform on the development of the pandemic on the island.

With a population of 11.2 million inhabitants, the Caribbean nation has accumulated to date a total of 2,446 infections, of which 2,319 have been discharged and 87 died. His first cases of the new coronavirus - three Italian tourists - were reported on March 11.

Dur?n explained that on Sunday "2,914 samples were studied" in the country's laboratories and that "none (of them) was positive for covid-19." He also highlighted that 38 confirmed cases receive medical attention in the island's hospitals and that all are progressing favorably.

However, he stressed that "unfortunately we know that we can continue to have more cases as we continue to deepen" the reviews.

"We do hope that we will have more cases, and that no one thinks that the (diagnostic) tests will decrease, that the actions of restrictions will decrease, because we are really aware that (...) asymptomatic people, infected in our country, with the possibility of transmission, "he added.

And "the objective is to find them, isolate them, diagnose them, and that we really achieve stability at this figure of zero (cases) or few cases," he said.

At the close of yesterday, July 29, 406 patients were admitted to hospitals for epidemiological clinical surveillance. Another 3,346 are monitored in primary health care.

67-year-old Cuban citizen. It comes from the Camag?ey province. Personal Pathological Background. Arterial Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and Obesity. It presents cough and light polypnea. Pathological chest radiography was performed and she was admitted to Intermediate Care. Clinical, radiological and gasometric worsening were observed, with distal cyanosis and desaturation appearing. She moves to Intensive Therapy. She is afebrile, on mechanical ventilation, with moderate respiratory distress. Hemodynamically stable. Gasometry with moderate hypoxemia. Rx thorax. Radiological improvement, inflammatory lesions in the left base. Reported in stable critical condition.

Until July 29, 185 countries with cases of COVID-19 are reported, amounting to 16 million 709 thousand 616 confirmed cases (+ 243 thousand 909) and 660 thousand 130 deaths (+ 6 thousand 268) for a lethality of 3.95 (-0.02).

On Monday 3,389 samples were processed in the different molecular biology laboratories in the country, which has accumulated so far a total of 277,863 tests carried out (with 2,701 positives, 0.97%).

The expert said that 463 patients are admitted to hospitals for clinical-epidemiological surveillance: 18 under surveillance, 216 suspects and 229 confirmed (active cases). Another 6 467 people are monitored in their homes, from primary health care.

Of the 2,701 patients diagnosed with the disease since March, 229 (8.4%) remain admitted confirmed; of them, 228 (99.5%) present stable clinical evolution. Since last March, 88 deaths have been reported (one this Monday), two evacuees and 2,382 patients recovered (nine discharges a day). A patient in serious condition is reported.

The 31 diagnosed on Monday are Cuban: 17 were confirmed case contacts, in four the source of infection has not been defined and 10 have a source of infection abroad.

Dur?n specified that 19 are men and 12 are women.
