Re: Colorado 2010-2011 Season: Weeks 40-2 (Three Deaths)
Week 2:
Two adult deaths have been reported this season, one each from Adams County and
Jefferson County. The first pediatric death of the season (adolescent from Garfield County)
will be reported next week.
Influenza activity continued to increase and spread geographically. Although influenza
A/H3N2 continues to be the predominant circulating strain, 2009 H1N1 and influenza B viruses
appear to be circulating in increasing amounts.
For the week ending 01/15, there were 16 new influenza-associated hospitalizations reported
along with 11 additional hospitalizations for the previous week, bringing the cumulative total to
136 hospitalizations from 24 counties.

(83% for Type A) compared to 12.1% for the previous week. There were 19 additional
specimens that tested positive for influenza A by PCR at the state laboratory. Of the type A
positive specimens, 74% subtyped as H3N2 and 26% subtyped as 2009 H1N1.
