Colombia confirms two new cases of coronavirus

The Ministry of Health of Colombia confirmed on Monday two new cases of coronavirus in the country, in travelers who arrived from Spain, with which there are already three people infected by COVID-19.

The patients are a 34-year-old man from the city of Buga, in the department of Valle del Cauca (southwest), and a 50-year-old woman who tested positive in Medell?n, capital of the department of Antioquia (northwest).

"Both patients, from Spain, presented symptoms and went to the health services where they were taken samples for the respective analyzes, which, confirmed by the National Institute of Health, gave positive results," said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

In both cases, “preventive isolation in their homes was ordered after the study of their medical condition, which is stable”.

Likewise, the “epidemiological siege was placed by locating people who had close contact with each one,” the information added.

The first case of coronavirus in Colombia was confirmed last Friday in a 19-year-old girl who arrived in Bogot? on February 26 from Milan (Italy).

After confirmation of this first case, the Government asked the regional and local authorities to activate a contingency plan “to face this global health challenge”.

The Colombian president, Iv?n Duque, said last night in an address to the country that the Government will respond “integrally” to the challenge of the arrival in the country of COVID-19.

“This is a situation that we have prepared for. We have the experience and we will devote all the efforts and all the necessary resources so that as a country we respond fully to this challenge, ”said the head of state.

On Saturday, Duke announced the creation of the CoronApp mobile application, which will work on mobile phones to centralize and give information about the coronavirus.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Colombia rose to 13 with four new confirmed infections, two of them recent travelers to Spain and one to Italy, Health Minister Fernando Ruiz reported on Friday.

“I would like to inform you that four cases of coronavirus disease were confirmed yesterday in Colombia. With this, the sum of those affected in the country by COVID-19 amounts to 13 people, ”Ruiz said at a press conference in Riohacha, capital of the Caribbean department of La Guajira, bordering Venezuela.

The minister explained that two of the new cases were confirmed in Bogot? and the other two in Neiva, capital of the southern department of Huila and where the first infections are reported in that area of the country.

“There are two cases in Neiva, corresponding to two older adults. A 74-year-old person residing in Italy, who came to visit Neiva, presented respiratory symptoms, attended the Neiva public hospital and was diagnosed there and is currently hospitalized in stable conditions, "he said.

He added that the “second person in Neiva is the sister of this person, 64 years old, also a woman, who also started symptoms and very quickly consulted the hospital. It is evaluated, the sample is taken, which is positive, and it is subsequently hospitalized. It is also in good condition, stable. "

Meanwhile, the two confirmed cases in Bogot? are of adult women, one 34 years old and the other 32, who were independently in recent weeks in Spain. The new infected in the Colombian capital, explained the minister, are not hospitalized but in "preventive isolation at home."

“We completed 13 cases and are acting on the subject. Obviously, the entire operation for the control of transmission chains was started, for the control of contacts. We will be attentive to give any additional information at the time we have that information, "he explained.

On March 6, Colombia confirmed its first case of coronavirus, a 19-year-old patient who arrived in Bogot? on February 26 from Italy.

On Thursday, Colombian President Iv?n Duque declared a "health emergency" for almost three months in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic and announced that all public events in which there are more than 500 people are canceled.

The president assured that the emergency is part of the government's containment plan for COVID-19 and is related to the WHO's decision the previous day to declare the pandemic. EFE

In order to face this epidemic and minimize its spread, we must take responsible measures:

Frequent hand washing or the use of gels or disinfectants if no washing is available.

People with flu-like syndrome should stay at their place of residence. If they have to move, they should do so with masks and, if possible, in non-massive transport.
The use of the mask is limited to people with flu-like syndromes or previous illnesses that warrant it. Caregivers of these people or health personnel.
Take measures to limit physical contact in greetings, visits to people with respiratory syndromes, and minimize visits to crowded places.
Remember that the most susceptible population is the elderly with whom we have to be alert to the signs they present: respiratory distress, fever that does not improve or deterioration of the general state. In addition, they should limit contact with people with influenza syndromes, crowds or massive events
Remember that people from abroad or contacts with them who present with flu syndromes should go to the doctor or call the hotlines.
