World
1 April 2020

BOGOTA, March 1 (Thomson Reuters Foundation): The first two cases of the coronavirus were confirmed among Colombia's indigenous people on Tuesday, local authorities said, fanning fears that the highly contagious disease could decimate vulnerable tribal communities.

The cases were found in two people from the Yukpa group who live in dire poverty in a cluster of makeshift shelters and tents in the northern border city of Cucuta, according to the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC), the country's leading indigenous authority.

Health experts said they fear the coronavirus could spread rapidly among tribes who have little immunity to diseases common in the general population...

Colombia exceeds 1,100 cases of Covid-19

April 2, 2020 cg magazineComments Off in Colombia exceeds 1,100 cases of Covid-19

The new coronavirus pandemic, which causes Covid-19 disease, reached one million infections on five continents. On March 6, the Ministry of Health confirmed the first case in Colombia and today, April 2, the figure has already reached 1,161 infected in the 23 departments of the national territory. The Government maintains mandatory isolation until April 13.

The Health portfolio confirmed the new balance in the afternoon, which includes 56 people successfully recovered. However, uncertainty grows after the declaration of a "Mitigation Plan" because the contagion line of 10% of those infected is unknown.

The capital has become the major focus of the outbreak with at least half of the patients diagnosed. So far, 19 deaths are reported, among these older adults and people with a chronic history. For its part, Minsalud reported that Amazonas, Arauca, Vichada, Vaup?s, Guaviare, Caquet?, Putumayo, Choc? and Guain?a still register contagion figures, however, a contingency plan is foreseen, since they are departments that limit Brazil, Venezuela and Ecuador.

Four months after the epidemiological line overflowed in Wuhan, China, epicenter of the pandemic, the socioeconomic balance has been affected by an invisible enemy that reached 191 countries with a death toll of 46,891. Spain and Italy, the nations most plagued by the situation, confirm more than 1,000 deaths daily.

Colombia adds a thousand 406 confirmed cases of Covid-19

Bogot?, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) Colombia adds a thousand 406 confirmed cases of Covid-19, registering 139 new ones in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health reported today.

The death toll stands at 32 and the number recovered at 85, he detailed in his most recent report.

Health Minister Fernando Ruiz announced this week that the country entered the Covid-19 mitigation stage.

"Right now, the index of cases that we have without a link, compared to those registered with a link, is at 11 percent. That is, 11 percent of the people with Covid-19 identified in Colombia do not have an epidemiological link, and as we said from the beginning above 10 percent would mean that we are in the mitigation stage, "he explained.

It is not a negative fact, it is a variation of a number, but it also indicates that the strategy should be "emphasized to the general population and not only the control and containment of cases of identified people," Ruiz said.

At a time when there are about 800 confirmed cases, the official referred to the measures taken by the country in the face of the pandemic and the challenges of future provisions as the cases arise.

The firing of the cases depends a lot on the measures and their effectiveness. So far we have gone at an appropriate pace, it is not to claim victory, but we have achieved levels of containment and it leads to the curve flattening and allowing people to be served in better conditions, he added.

The most difficult, if nothing were done, would be in mid-May, but we are seeing that we have not been shot at the levels that could have been if the measures had not been taken, he added when living a preventive mandatory isolation until the next April 13th.

Having a quarantine period for a country is very hard, but necessary and we know it now. In the future, we will surely have to continue taking measures to keep the curve as flat as possible, he said at a time when demands are increasing for biosecurity measures to be guaranteed to health workers.

For future measures, he said, the behavior of the epidemic must be followed at this time and thus be able to analyze which are the most appropriate.

We will have children at home until at least April 20 and those over 70 until May 30. But according to how the curve is presented, we will be making decisions, he assured.
