The above comments are from an alert issued by Hong Kong in response to the recent H5N1 fatalities in southern China. The most recent (44F), who died today, has been H5N1 confirmed. Media reports suggest dead chickens owned and eaten by the victim are likely sources of the infection.

However, the new cases in southern China and northern Vietnam (see satellite map) raise the possibility of a more efficient transmission to humans and the above alert would target the more severe cases, which involve pneumonia, which is common in fatal cases. All of the recent confirmed cases in southern China and northern Vietnam have been fatal.

Sequence data on H5N1 from the recent cases would be useful.

It is the third human death involving bird flu this year, following two cases confirmed last week, one in Hunan province and the other in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
The 44-year-old woman, surnamed Zhang, was a migrant worker from Sichuan province and worked in Haifeng county in the city of Shanwei.
She was suspected to have caught the deadly H5N1 virus through contact with dead poultryearlier this month.Hans Troedsson, the World Health Organization (WHO) China Representative, said they had received preliminary information about the case from the Chinese Ministry of Health (MOH) over the weekend.
"The WHO is monitoring the situation with the ministry," he told China Daily.
On Feb 16, Zhang came down with a fever and cough. She was sent to a local health care center on the same day. Because the illness did not improve in the following few days, she was transferred to a larger hospital in Haifeng county last Friday.
The Shanwei municipal health bureau diagnosed Zhang's disease as pneumonia of undetermined origin on Friday, a bureau official said.
The Guangdong provincial center for disease control and prevention (CDC) tested the patient's blood sample during the weekend. The test turned out to be H5N1-positive and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-negative.
The provincial health department defined it as a suspected case of highly pathogenic human avian influenza. The department reported the case to the MOH on Saturday for final confirmation.
The woman died at about 9am Monday.
There have been no reports yet of massive culling of poultry in Haifeng county. However, provincial health authorities have dispatched medical experts to the county to keep a close eye on people who had contact with Zhang, as well as those who had handled dead poultry.:magnify:
Also Monday, the Ministry of Agriculture said 3,993 poultry have died of bird flu in Zheng'an county, Zunyi, Guizhou province since Feb 17. The total number of fowl culled is 238,000. An emergency plan has been launched and the situation is under effective control, the ministry said.
China has confirmed 30 human bird flu cases since 2003, 20 of which have been fatal, the MOH said. Worldwide, there have been 232 human deaths and 366 confirmed cases of infection since 2003, according to the WHO.

The Ministry of Health in China has reported a new case of human infection
with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 41 year old male from
Xixiangtang District of Nanning City of Guangxi Autonomous Region.

He developed symptoms on 12 Feb 2008 and died on 20 Feb 2008. The case was
confirmed by the national laboratory on 21 Feb 2008. The case had contact
with sick and dead poultry prior to his illness. All contacts have been
placed under medical observation. All remain healthy to date.

Of the 29 cases confirmed to date in China, 19 have been fatal.

In response to the fatal case of human infection with avian influenza
occurring on 20 Feb 2008, and to protect the health and safety of the
masses and preserve social stability, the Nanning Municipal Administration
of Industry & Commerce immediately adopted emergency measures and actively
undertook avian influenza prevention and control work to guarantee that
avian influenza does not extend and does not spread.

Sources say that on 19 Feb 2008, Guangxi Ruikang Hospital admitted a
pneumonia patient. The patient was a 42 year old unemployed man, registered
residency in Beihu'anju Neighborhood in Nanning Municipality's Xixiangtang
District. On 23 Feb 2008 the patient came down with fatigue, nasal
congestion, and runny nose. The next day he developed chills, fever, and
cough. He gave himself Ganmaoling Granules [a traditional Chinese cold
medicine]. Symptoms did not improve. On 14 Feb 2008, he sought medical
attention at Guangxi Minzu Hospital. On 18 Feb 2008, the patient's
condition rapidly deteriorated. After all treatment failed, he died on 20
Feb 2008. The Ministry of Health human avian influenza prevention and
control expert team determined this was a fatal case of infection with
avian influenza. According to investigations, the patient bought 3 live
chickens on 4 Feb 2008 from a chicken vending stall at Heping Market in
Pumiao Township, Yongning District [of Nanning Municipality]. That night,
one chicken died of unknown causes (this chicken was thrown in a garbage
dump by the patient, unconsumed). On 5 Feb 2008, the patient found that of
the other 2 chickens, one had developed symptoms of "chicken cholera." The
patient then slaughtered and ate them. Later, the patient developed
symptoms of infection.

region died of the H5N1 bird flu virus [see above], the 3rd death from the
disease since late last year [2007], the Health Ministry said. Of the 29
cases confirmed to date in China, 19 have been fatal. There have been 232
human deaths globally from the H5N1 strain and 366 confirmed cases of
infection since 2003, according to WHO data.
