A middle-aged woman is in serious condition in southern China with suspected bird flu, the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said in a statement early Monday.

The 44-year-old woman in Guangdong Province developed symptoms on February 16 consistent with the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus, the CHP said.
The case has yet to be confirmed by the health ministry and the CHP is in close contact with health authorities in Guangdong, the statement said.
A 41-year-old man died of bird flu in the Guangxi autonomous region in southern China on February 20, while a 22-year-old man in the central Hunan Province died of the disease on January 24.
At least 19 people have died of bird flu in China, while ten others have recovered.
The deadly strain has killed more than 200 people worldwide and ravaged poultry flocks since 2003, according to the World Health Organisation.
Scientists fear the virus can eventually mutate into a form that is much more easily transmissible between humans, triggering a global pandemic.

Woman in China's Guangdong has suspected bird flu

A woman in southern China is suspected to have been infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus, the Hong Kong government said on Monday, a week after the country reported its third death from the disease since last year.
The Centre for Health Protection said it had been notified by the Department of Health of the southern Guangdong province and Ministry of Health that the 44-year-old woman had developed symptoms on February 16 and the case had yet to be confirmed.
It gave no further details.
Last week, a man from China's southern Guangxi autonomous region died of the H5N1 bird flu virus, the third death from the disease since late last year, the Health Ministry said.
Of the 29 cases confirmed to date in China, 19 have been fatal. There have been 232 human deaths globally from the H5N1 strain and 366 confirmed cases of infection since 2003, according to WHO data.

BEIJING: A 44-year-old woman in southern China who was suspected of having contracted bird flu died on Monday, state media reported, in what would be the third death from the virus in the Asian nation this year.

The migrant worker, surnamed Zhang, died after developing a fever and a cough following contact with poultry in Guangdong province, the Xinhua news agency said.

Xinhua cited local health officials but the health ministry in Beijing declined to comment. "We have no information on the case," an official at the ministry's media office said when contacted by AFP.

The victim developed symptoms on February 16 consistent with the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus, the Hong Kong-based Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said in a statement released early Monday.

She was hospitalised on Friday, Xinhua said.

If confirmed as a bird flu-related death, it would be the third in China since the start of 2008.

A 41-year-old man died of bird flu in the Guangxi autonomous region in southern China on February 20, while a 22-year-old man in central Hunan province died on January 24.

Not including the death of Zhang in Guangdong, 19 people have been confirmed to have died of bird flu in China since 2003, while 10 others have recovered after catching the virus.

The deadly strain has killed more than 200 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation.

Scientists fear the virus can eventually mutate into a form that is much more easily transmissible between humans, triggering a global pandemic.

China conducted a huge campaign last year to contain the disease, vaccinating tens of millions of poultry and stepping up public education efforts. - AFP/ac

Suspect H5N1 Fatality in Guangdong China

Recombinomics Commentary 07:34
February 25, 2008

A 44-year-old woman in south China's Guangdong Province was suspected to have bird flu, the provincial health department confirmed Monday.

The migrant female worker, surnamed Zhang, was found to have had contact with poultry died of illness and have had developed symptoms of fever and cough since February 16, the department said.

The patient was hospitalized last Friday in Haifeng County in Shanwei City.

The above comments describe a suspect H5N1 fatality in Shanwei City in Guangdong Province (see satellite map). This case follows the confirmed (41M) case in Guangxi earlier this month, and the confirmed (22M) case in Hunan. These three cases in the south follow a human to human cluster in northern China at the end of last year.

The cases in southern China are likely to be linked to clade 2.3 (Fujian strain), which is also the likely cause of the recent confirmed cases in northern Vietnam. All of the confirmed cases in southern China and northern Vietnam have been fatal. Suspect cases, as well as a 7 year old who has been described as confirmed in some media reports, have not been recently updated, but represent an addition concern with regard to milder, unreported cases.

Sequence data on the recent cases in China and Vietnam would be useful.

Woman dies of bird flu in southern China
(Reuters)

25 February 2008

HONG KONG - A woman in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong has died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the government said on Monday, the fourth human death from the virus in China since late last year.
The 44-year-old migrant worker, surnamed Zhang, was working in Haifeng county in the eastern part of Guangdong, where she had contact with dead poultry. She died after developing fever and a cough.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
?The patient?s condition was too serious and she died on Monday after treatment failed,? said a statement on the Web site of Guangdong?s health department (www.gdwst.gov.cn).
The woman tested positive for H5N1 in a test conducted by Guangdong?s Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, which has asked the Health Ministry to confirm the result.
The latest case follows two confirmed deaths from bird flu in China this year, one in central Hunan province and the other in the southern region of Guangxi. In December, a man in the eastern province of Jiangsu also died from the disease.
The spate of cases is a concern for a country that has the world?s biggest poultry population, many of them backyard birds roaming free. China has struggled to combat the virus with mass innoculations for birds and an education campaign for those who handle them.
Zhang developed symptoms of fever, cough and pneumonia on Feb. 16, but was only admitted to the county hospital on Feb. 22, after first seeking treatment at a local clinic, the Guangdong statement said.
There was no sign of further cases of the virus that scientists fear could mutate into a form that can pass easily between people, sparking a global pandemic.
?All those who have had close contact with the patient have shown no similar symptoms so far,? the statement said.
Of the 29 cases confirmed to date in China, 19 have been fatal.
According to WHO data, there have been 232 human deaths globally from the H5N1 strain and 366 confirmed cases of infection since 2003.

Bird flu precautions bolstered

Preventive measures against avian influenza have been enhanced in Hong Kong due to a suspected human H5N1 case in Guangdong involving a 44-year-old Sichuan woman.

Speaking at a press briefing this afternoon Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Thomas Tsang said the Shantou resident developed symptoms on February 16 and died this morning. The case has yet to be confirmed by the Ministry of Health.

She had consumed some of the unvaccinated chickens kept in her backyard. As those chickens became sick and died during the incubation period of her illness it is believed she got the virus from them. There is no evidence or signs of human-to-human transmission.

Strengthened surveillance

The centre and the Hospital Authority have expanded the pneumonia surveillance programme. Public hospitals will conduct tests on patients with pneumonia symptoms of unknown origin who came back from Guangdong in the last six months.

The centre will strengthen its port health measures by enhancing publicity and stepping up temperature screening measures. It will inform healthcare staff of the latest situation and remind them to report suspicious cases promptly.

The Government has also asked the Guangdong Inspection & Quarantine Department to enhance inspection and surveillance of all registered farms supplying poultry to Hong Kong.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will send veterinary officers to inspect the farms and enhance inspection and sample-taking to ensure poultry supplied to Hong Kong is safe for consumption.

Tougher enforcement

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department will enhance its inspection of local poultry farms and enhance surveillance of live birds sold in wholesale markets and step up cleansing work.

The Customs & Excise Department will enhance inspections at the boundary to combat poultry smuggling activities.

People travelling to the Mainland are urged not to bring any live poultry or uncooked poultry products to Hong Kong. People are also reminded to avoid contact with live poultry.

Hospital Authority activates Enhanced Surveillance Programme for avian influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Upon notification by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of a suspected human case of avian influenza H5N1 in Guangdong Province, the Hospital Authority (HA) today (February 25) announces that it will implement a four-week Enhanced Surveillance Programme in public hospitals from tomorrow (February 26) until March 24, with the following measures:

- Public hospitals should report to the e-Flu system of HA all patients fulfilling the case definition of having pneumonia (all types) of unidentified etiology and travel history to affected areas/countries with confirmed human cases of avian influenza infection in the past six months, within seven days before symptoms onset.

- The laboratory of Queen Mary Hospital and the Public Health Laboratory Centre of the Department of Health will participate in the Enhanced Surveillance Programme to provide rapid testing for avian influenza.

- This Enhanced Surveillance Programme will be reviewed in four weeks' time.

- Meanwhile, all infection control measures of public hospitals under the current Alert Response Level are still in effect.

"HA head office has also reminded the frontline staff of hospitals and clinics to step up all infection control measures and maintain vigilance. HA will closely observe the report from CHP which will continue to liaise with the Ministry of Health on the latest developments. We will continue the close liaison with CHP and will update frontline staff and the public accordingly," a spokesman for HA said.

Re: China - Human Cases 2008

4th avian flu death suspected in Guangdong Province
By Donald Greenlees

Monday, February 25, 2008
HONG KONG: Health authorities tightened surveillance measures against avian influenza here Monday following the fourth death in mainland China suspected to have been caused by the virus since late last year.
Hospitals will be required to step up monitoring and reporting of patients with symptoms of pneumonia over a four-week period from Tuesday amid concerns of a renewed outbreak of the deadly H5N1 virus.
A 44-year-old woman died Monday in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong from an infection suspected to have been bird flu, Chinese and Hong Kong health officials said. A test by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control in Guangdong found the woman to have been infected with the virus, but the result had yet to be confirmed by the Health Ministry in Beijing.
Her death follows several confirmed cases of bird flu infection since December. A 24-year-old man from the eastern province of Jiangsu died on Dec. 2. He passed the virus to his 52-year-old father, who later recovered. In the latest cases, a 22-year-old man from central Hunan Province died on Jan. 24, and a 41-year-old man from the southern region of Guangxi died on Feb. 20.
Hans Troedsson, the World Health Organization representative in China, said there was only a "preliminary" report on the Guangdong case.
But since mid-December, health and agriculture authorities in Hong Kong have been on heightened alert for cases of bird flu in humans and poultry. They have advised airlines and the travel industry to distribute information to travelers going to and from Jiangsu.
In a statement announcing additional measures Monday, the health authorities said they had alerted "frontline staff of hospitals and clinics to step up all infection control measures and maintain vigilance."
Evidence of a resurgence of the bird flu virus causes jitters in Hong Kong, where the economy was battered several years ago by an epidemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS.
Since late 2003, the H5N1 virus strain has been widespread in poultry populations in Asia and parts of Europe and has led to the culling of tens of millions of birds. China has the biggest domestic poultry population in the world, with many of the birds kept by households.
The World Health Organization has reported 232 deaths worldwide in the past four years, 29 of them in China.
Almost all the reported cases have been as a result of close contact between humans and infected birds. But there are fears that as the number of cases in people increases, so will the risk of the virus mutating into a form that is easily transmissible.
Health officials in Hong Kong said the Guangdong woman who died Monday appeared to have contracted the illness from poultry she kept near her home.
"This lady kept some chickens in her backyard, and they became sick and died during the incubation period of her illness. She also ate some of the chickens herself," Thomas Tsang, the controller of Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection, told Reuters.
Tsang said anyone in Hong Kong who has "signs of pneumonia and has visited Guangdong in the past six months" will be tested for the virus.

Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection has stepped up anti-bird flu measures following the death yesterday of a 44-year-old woman in neighboring Guangdong.

The victim, who died in the coastal city of Shanwei, is suspected of eating a chicken she had raised.
The death remains a suspected H5N1 case. Two other people - one in Guangxi and one in Hunan - died of bird flu in the mainland this year.
"There is no evidence of human to human transmission," said Thomas Tsang Ho-fai, the center's controller, refering to the latest victim.
He said the chickens raised by the woman - who started to have fever, coughing and pneumonia on February 16 - had not been vaccinated and began dying between February 13 and 20.
Tsang said the government will step up measures today by conducting bird flu tests on public hospital patients who have traveled to the affected areas in the past six months and developed unidentified pneumonia symptoms.
The government, Tsang said, will also appeal to private doctors and hospitals to report as soon as possible any suspected bird flu cases.
Temperature checks at borders will continue.
Tsang said the closest chicken farm to Shanwei that supplies live poultry to Hong Kong is 40 to 50 kilometers away from the city.
Assistant Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation (inspection and quarantine) Thomas Sit Hon-chung said the government has yet to consider banning live chickens into Hong Kong or cutting imports.
Sit said a team of veterinarians will be sent to mainland poultry farms that supply Hong Kong to ensure inspection and quarantine measures are properly conducted.
He added the authorities will step up cleansing local chicken farms and wholesale markets.
Tsang said the latest case brought the mainland bird flu death toll since the disease first appeared to 20. The World Health Organization says there were 99 cases of bird flu worldwide last year.
Paul Chan Kay-sheung, a microbiology professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said there is a small chance bird flu would turn into an epidemic as was the case with SARS in 2003.
"At this stage, the possibility of bird flu transmission to humans remains low. Human-to-human transmission would only happen when the patient has extremely close contact with others for a few days," he said, pointing out that only contact with a large amount of saliva, phlegm, nasal mucus or even feces could possibly transmit bird flu.

A 44-year-old woman in southern China who tested positive for bird flu died on Monday, health officials said, in what is likely the country's third reported death from the virus this year.
The migrant worker, surnamed Zhang, died after developing a fever and a cough following contact with dead poultry in Guangdong, the province's health department said, although authorities in Beijing did not immediately comment.
In the financial hub of Hong Kong, which borders Guangdong, officials reacted by increasing tests of poultry coming over the border, although there was no ban on imports as occurred in similar cases previously.
The Guangdong health department said Zhang died in hospital after developing a fever, cough and inflammation of the lungs on February 16.
"We undertook tests on the patient and found that ... a test for the bird flu virus (H5N1) was positive," the department said in a statement.
"It was determined that before her illness she had had contact with dead poultry," the statement added, without saying specifically that the suspect fowl had H5N1.
The department said that no-one else who had come into close contact with the victim had shown any symptoms of the virus.
The central health ministry did not confirm the case. "We have no information," an official at the ministry's media office in Beijing said when contacted by AFP. In China, the central government authorities carry out their own tests for bird flu cases.
The World Health Organisation's China representative, Hans Troedsson, said the Chinese health ministry had informed his office of the potential bird flu case on Sunday.
If confirmed as a bird flu-related death, it would be the third in China since the start of 2008.
A 41-year-old man died of the virus in the southern Guangxi autonomous region on February 20, while a 22-year-old man in central Hunan province died on January 24.
Not including the death of Zhang in Guangdong, 19 people have been confirmed to have died of bird flu in China since 2003, while 10 others have recovered after catching the virus.
The latest deaths come despite China conducting a huge campaign last year to contain the disease, during which it attempted to vaccinate its entire tens of millions of poultry and stepping up public education efforts.
Hong Kong authorities appeared to be monitoring the Guangdong case very closely and gave more details than Chinese officials.
Zhang farmed poultry at her home and ate chicken after it had fallen ill and died, Thomas Tsang, the controller of the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health in Hong Kong, said.
The Hong Kong government has strengthened its border control, will continue to do temperature checks on those entering the territory and step-up inspections of imported poultry, Tsang told reporters.
Anyone who entered the city from the Guangdong province in the past six months and catches pneumonia must be tested for bird flu, he added, but there were as yet no plans to ban poultry imports from the province.

Bird flu has killed more than 200 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation. Scientists fear the virus could eventually mutate into a form that is much more easily transmissible between humans, triggering a global pandemic.
