‎30 December‎2011

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health received notification from the Ministry of Health (MoH) tonight (December 30) concerning a suspected human case of influenza A (H5N1) in Shenzhen.

A CHP spokesman said the patient was a 39-year-old man living in Shenzhen.

He developed symptoms on December 21 and was admitted to a hospital on December 25 because of severe pneumonia.

He is now in critical condition.

The man had no travel history or contact with poultry before the onset of symptoms.

Preliminary laboratory tests on the patient's specimen by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of Guangdong Province yielded positive result for H5N1.

The CHP is maintaining close liaison with the Guangdong Department of Health to obtain more information on the case.

We will heighten our vigilance and continue to maintain stringent port health measures in connection with this development, the spokesman said.

The spokesman reminded members of the public to remain vigilant against avian influenza infection and to observe the following measures:

* Avoid direct contact with poultry and birds or their droppings; if contacts have been made, they should wash hands thoroughly with soap and water;
* Poultry and eggs should be thoroughly cooked before eating;

A 39-year-old man is in critical condition after testing positive for the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, state media reported Saturday quoting local health authorities.

The city borders Hong Kong, which has culled thousands of chickens and ordered a suspension of live poultry imports from China after three birds tested positive with the strain in mid-December.

The man, a bus driver surnamed Chen, was hospitalised with a fever on December 21 and tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus in Shenzhen's Bao'an district, the provincial health department said, according to Xinhua news agency.

He remains in a critical condition and is receiving emergency treatment, the report said, adding that the man had apparently had no direct contact with poultry in the month before he was taken ill nor had he left the city.

Chinese and Hong Kong authorities have been working closely together since December 21 after live poultry supplies were suspended to the glitzy financial hub following the discovery of infected birds.

It is always worth to note that most of human A(H5N1) avian influenza virus infections in China since 2003 had not recognized contact with poultry (ie live chickens, carcasses, diseased animals).

...The suspected migratory;)

Yesterday, Guangdong Province, He Jianfeng, director of Communicable Disease Prevention, said after the WHO's research, people infected with avian influenza viruses from birds.
。
People infected with avian flu is rare, and it is distributed. The public need not panic. "The current study shows that people are not so susceptible to this virus, now consider the hypothesis of a relationship of some human genes."

The man with the bird flu is an outbreak of avian flu in Hong Kong has to do with it? Jianfeng said that at present can not confirm whether the relationship between the two.
。
However, note that there are two migratory routes in Guangdong.
一。
One is the East coast, including Shenzhen, Shantou, Shanwei. The other one is from Jiangxi to Nanxiong to Guangzhou, Guangdong, the central movement of this line. Hong Kong and Shenzhen in Guangdong, the central migratory online.

New Year's Day is around the peak of wild bird migration. "We are investigating the man found him five days before the onset of the rest, because the sprained foot, and not to drive. But there is a characteristic that he lived more in the environment of migratory birds, exercise every morning to the field, that also many places of migratory birds. "Jianfeng said he was now highly suspicious of migratory birds infected with the virus may be a relationship. :tiphat:http://translate.googleusercontent....34.htm&usg=ALkJrhiiLhZECqDCjU-yU-USh5394eP7OA

Re: China - Suspected Human case of H5N1 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province (December 30 2011), Preliminary test is H5N1 Positive

While there have been 2 recent native Hong Kong wild birds that have tested positive for H5N1 here and here, I not think this is conclusive proof that the bus driver in Shenzhen was exposed to H5N1 through wild birds.

In November an FAO adviser was quoted in the China Daily newspaper, (H5N1) "seems to exist widely in the poultry markets, particularly in South China, posing a tough challenge for the nation's epidemic intervention work." Also mentioned the article was the spread of the H5N1 clade 2.3.2.1 in live poultry. It is not clear whether the current poultry vaccine used in China fully protects against this clade.

In addition, as a bus driver, he was exposed to the public at close range in a contained vehicle. Limited human to human transmission can not be ruled out in this case.

Re: China - Suspected Human case of H5N1 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province (December 30 2011), Preliminary test is H5N1 Positive

Confusing situation again. Treyfish's post above (#16) suggests that the bus driver was not working and home on sick leave for a sprained foot for 5 days before onset. He would have had limited exposure from other bus riders if this is the case. Importantly though, if he had a sprained foot he probably would not have been exercising outdoors where he might have been exposed to H5N1 from infected migratory birds.
