China says latest COVID-19 outbreak caused by imported cases

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China’s recent COVID-19 outbreaks in the northeast have come from travelers entering the country or contaminated frozen food imports, the National Health Commission (NHC) said on Saturday.

NHC Minister Ma Xiaowei made the comments at a government meeting, where he also said the virus was spreading to rural areas and that the handling of the recent situation had exposed how prevention and control measures had been relaxed.

“Since Dec. 2020, epidemic clusters have occurred in Beijing, Sichuan, Liaoning, Hebei and Heilongjiang,” a statement posted on the NHC’s website said citing the briefing by Ma.

“They mainly have the following characteristics. Firstly, they are all imported from abroad, caused by travelers from overseas, or contaminated cold-chain imported items.”

Beijing News Express (Reporter Dai Xuan) Beijing today held the 215th new crown prevention and control work conference. Pang Xinghuo, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, introduced that on January 19, the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted whole genome sequencing and analysis of the new coronavirus samples from two local confirmed cases reported in Daxing District on January 17. The results suggest that the two cases of virus belong to the L genotype European family branch 1 (B.1.1.7), which is the same transmission chain.


The virus has no genetic association with the previously reported local cases and imported cases in Beijing, and has no genetic association with recent local cases in other provinces in China, and is highly homologous to the new coronavirus variants found in the UK. After a review by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the two confirmed cases of virus are considered to be variants of the new coronavirus discovered in the United Kingdom, and the source of infection is initially determined to be imported from abroad.


The epidemiological relationship between subsequent cases in Daxing and other areas will be further investigated and demonstrated to clarify the intergenerational relationship between cases. At present, the traceability of the local clustered epidemic situation in Daxing District is underway.
