Strong earthquake hits China

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 has hit China's southern province of Sichuan, shaking buildings as far away as Beijing, Shanghai and Bangkok.

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties or damage from the tremor which the the US Geological Survey (UGS) earlier put at 7.8.

The epicentre of the quake was 93 kilometres north of Chengdu.

Wenchuan, which took full force of the quake, has a population of 111,000 people.

It is in an ethnic Tibetan area in Aba county which recently saw violent clashes between Tibetans and Chinese authorities.

According to some reports there was second earthquake measuring 3.9 which hit the Beijing district of Tongzhou at roughly the same time.

Telephone lines in the effected area are jammed and there are still no reports of casualties.

Reports from Thailand say high buildings in Bangkok continued to shake several minutes after the tremors began.

"We felt continuous shaking for about two or three minutes. All the people in our office are rushing downstairs. We're still feeling slight tremblings," said an office worker in Chengdu.

China's tallest building, the Jinmao Tower, and other highrise buildings in Shanghai's financial district were evacuated after tremors were first felt.

"People were shouting 'get out, get out', so we all ran out of our dorm," said a student surnamed Zhang at a university in nearby Chongqing.

A spokesman for the China Earthquake Administration said it was still checking the epicentre and scale of the tremor.

Aftershocks are continuing but not so strong - USGS - http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php

I have been keeping an eye on reports with Google translate. So far, the situation is confusing. The quake was felt in Beijing, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand. There are various reports of old buildings collapsed, Chengdu airport is closed, land or cell phones are not functioning properly, water mains may have been damaged. The near Three Gorges Dam appears undamaged, as well the gas and oil factory nearby. The army has been called in. There are as yet no report of injuries.

Re: CHINA - 7.5 earthquake near Chengdu, Sichuan Province

Re: CHINA - 7.5 earthquake near Chengdu, Sichuan Province

Kobe,1995 was 7.3 with $200B damage and 6400 dead

but the center was only 20km away, here it's 90km away from Chengdu

Heavy and destructive earthquakes are relatively frequent in China. Scarcely one year ago with a quake of the strength 6.4 in the south of China several humans had been killed and hundreds had been hurt. With a quake of the strength 7.6 in the year 1988 748 humans died. At the end of occurred last March an earthquake with a strength of 7,2 in the province Xinjian in China.

Four children died when their schools in Chongqing municipality collapsed, the official Xinhua News Agency said. More than 100 students were injured, including two who were seriously hurt, the report said.

One person was killed after the temblor toppled a water tower in neighboring Sichuan province, Xinhua said.

Rescue teams were dispatched to the collapsed schools, but no details were available because communication systems were down, an official in Chongqing municipality told The Associated Press, before hanging up.

Injuries were also reported in Aba prefecture of Sichuan province, where the earthquake was centered. A statement issued by the local government said the quake cracked and collapsed buildings, and damaged mountain roads.

The statement did not say how many people were injured or give any details. The area has a population of about 110,000 residents, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The quake struck 57 miles (92 kilometers) northwest of the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu at 2:28 p.m. (0628 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site. It said the 7.8-magnitude quake was centered about 6 miles (10 kilometers) below the surface.

Two aftershocks of measuring 6.0 and 5.4 struck shortly afterward in the same part of eastern Sichuan, according to the USGS.

Chinese President Hu Jintao ordered that the injured be quickly treated, saying lives were of the utmost importance, Xinhua reported. Premier Wen Jiabao was headed to the epicenter and troops with China's People's Liberation Army were being dispatched to help with disaster relief.

Many phone calls to the area did not go through after the quake, which was felt as far away as Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan. Thousands of people evacuated buildings in Beijing, some 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) from the epicenter.
"I've lived in Taipei and California and I've been through quakes before. This is the most I've ever felt," said James McGregor, a business consultant who was inside the LG Towers in Beijing's business district. "The floor was moving underneath me." :tiphat: http://www.chinapost.com.tw/china/national news/2008/05/12/156109/7.8-magnitude.htm

Report: 3,000 feared dead in China quake

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- At least 3,000 people are feared dead in Monday's earthquake in China's Sichuan Province, state-run news agency Xinhua said.
Citing local officials, Xinhua said at least 3,000 were thought to be dead in Beichuan County, part of Sichuan Province.

Earlier, Xinhua had said at least 107 people died in the 7.8-magnitude quake that rocked central China and left several hundred students feared buried in collapsed school buildings.

The quake was "felt in most parts of China," Xinhua reported, with the confirmed casualties in the provinces and municipality of Sichuan, Gansu, Chongqing and Yunnan.

Xinhua said several schools collapsed, at least partially, in the quake.

At one, as many as 900 students were feared buried.

"Some buried teenagers were struggling to break loose from underneath the ruins while others were crying out for help," Xinhua reported.

"Grieved parents watched as five cranes were excavating at the site and an ambulance was waiting."

Among the 107 dead were 55 in Sichuan Province, where 600 people were also injured, Xinhua said.

One person was killed in Santai County, in the city of Mianyang, when a water tower fell, the news agency reported.

Xinhua did not detail where the 107 deaths occurred, although it reported earlier that four students were killed and 110 hurt when a middle school building collapsed in Juyuan Township of Dujiangyan City, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of the epicenter.

nother person was killed when a water tower fell in the city of Mianyang, the news agency reported.

A provincial government spokesman said they feared more dead and injured in collapsed houses in Dujiangyan City in Wenchuan County, Xinhua reported.

The news agency also quoted a driver for the seismological bureau saying he saw "rows of houses collapsed" in Dujiangyan.

Chinese President Hu Jintao immediately ordered an all-out effort to help victims of the earthquakes, Xinhua reported. It said Premier Wen Jiabao would go there to direct the rescue work.

Bonnie Thie, the country director the Peace Corps, was on a university campus in Chengdu about 60 miles from the epicenter, in the eastern part of China's Sichuan province, when the first quake hit.

"You could see the ground shaking," Thie told CNN.

The shaking "went on for what seemed like a very long time," she said.

"This is a very dangerous earthquake," said Bruce Presgrave, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake had the potential to cause major damage because of its strength and proximity to major population centers, he said. Read an explanation about earthquakes. ?

In addition, the earthquake was relatively shallow, Presgrave said, and those kinds of quakes tend to do more damage near the epicenter than deeper ones.

An earthquake with 7.5 magnitude in the northern Chinese city of Tangshan killed 255,000 people in 1976 -- the greatest death toll from an earthquake in the last four centuries and the second greatest in recorded history, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Tangshan is roughly 995 miles (1,600 km) from Chengdu, the nearest major city to the epicenter of Monday's quake.

After the first quake struck Monday, the ground shook as far away as Beijing, which is 950 miles (1,528 km) from the epicenter.

They felt "a very quiet rolling sensation" that lasted for about a minute, according to CNN correspondent John Vause.

"Our building began to sway," he said.

Thousands of people were evacuated from Beijing high-rises immediately after the earthquake.

At least six more earthquakes -- measuring between 4.0 and 6.0 magnitudes -- happened nearby over the three hours after the initial quake at at 2:28 p.m. local time (0728 GMT, 0228 ET), the USGS reported.

A spokesman for the Beijing Olympic Committee said no Olympic venues were affected by the earthquake. The massive Three Gorges Dam -- roughly 400 miles east of the epicenter -- was not damaged, a spokesman said.

The earthquake was also felt in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taiwan, and as far away as Hanoi, Vietnam, and Bangkok, Thailand, according to the Hong Kong-based Mandarin-language channel Phoenix TV.

CHONGQING, China ? A powerful earthquake struck central China on Monday and state media reported that as many as 5,000 people were killed in a single county while nearly 900 students were trapped after their school collapsed.

The official Xinhua News Agency said 3,000 to 5,000 people had died and 80 percent of buildings toppled in Beichuan county in Sichuan province after the 7.8-magnitude quake. Another 10,000 people there were believed to be hurt.

The earthquake sent thousands of people rushing out of buildings and into the streets hundreds of miles away in Beijing and Shanghai. The temblor was felt as far away as Pakistan, Vietnam and Thailand.

Four of the dead were ninth-grade students killed when their high school collapsed, Xinhua said. Photos showed heavy cranes trying to remove rubble from the ruined school. Xinhua did not say how many of the students were feared dead.

It said its reporters in Juyuan township, about 60 miles from the epicenter, saw buried teenagers struggling to break loose from underneath the rubble of the three-story building "while others were crying out for help."

Two girls were quoted by Xinhua as saying they escaped because they had "run faster than others."

The earthquake comes less than three months before the start of the Beijing Summer Olympics, when China hopes to use to showcase its rise in the world.

Shanghai's main index inched up Monday, but the advance was capped by worries over inflation and potential damage from the earthquake. Analysts said that shares of companies located in the Sichuan region may fall in coming sessions due to the quake.

It struck in the middle of the afternoon when classes and office towers were full, about 60 miles northwest of Chengdu. There were several smaller aftershocks, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.

Calls into the city did not go through as panicked residents quickly overloaded the telephone system. The quake affected telephone and power networks, and even state media appeared to have few details of the disaster.

"In Chengdu, mobile telecommunication convertors have experienced jams and thousands of servers were out of service," said Sha Yuejia, deputy chief executive officer of China Mobile.

Although it was difficult to telephone Chengdu, an Israeli student, Ronen Medzini, sent a text message to The Associated Press saying there were power and water outages there.

"Traffic jams, no running water, power outs, everyone sitting in the streets, patients evacuated from hospitals sitting outside and waiting," he said.

Xinhua said an underground water pipe ruptured near the city's southern railway station, flooding a main thoroughfare. Reporters saw buildings with cracks in their walls but no collapses, Xinhua said.

The earthquake also rattled buildings in Beijing, some 930 miles to the north, less than three months before the Chinese capital was expected to be full of hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors for the Summer Olympics.

Many Beijing office towers were evacuated, including the building housing the media offices for the organizers of the Olympics, which start in August.

"I've lived in Taipei and California and I've been through quakes before. This is the most I've ever felt," said James McGregor, a business consultant who was inside the LG Towers in Beijing's business district. "The floor was moving underneath me."

In Fuyang, 660 miles to the east, chandeliers in the lobby of the Buckingham Palace Hotel swayed. "We've never felt anything like this our whole lives," said a hotel employee surnamed Zhu.

Patients at the Fuyang People's No. 1 Hospital were evacuated. An hour after the quake, a half-dozen patients in blue-striped pajamas stood outside the hospital. One was laying on a hospital bed in the parking lot.

Skyscrapers in Shanghai swayed and most office occupants went rushing into the streets.

In the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, 100 miles off the southeastern Chinese coast, buildings swayed when the quake hit. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake was felt as far away as the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, where some people hurried out of swaying office buildings and into the streets downtown. A building in the Thai capital of Bangkok also was evacuated after the quake was felt there.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake is considered a major event, capable of causing widespread damage and injuries in populated areas.

The last serious earthquake in China was in 2003, when a 6.8-magnitude quake killed 268 people in Bachu county in the west of Xinjiang.

China's deadliest earthquake in modern history struck the northeastern city of Tangshan on July 28, 1976, killing 240,000 people.

The threat of aftershocks, still linger, China has multiple reservoir leakage, in particular cause for concern.

It should be noted that the second phase of relief work, can be said to be extremely difficult, one of the reasons is that this area of great disaster areas, thus greatly distracted rescue forces. Xinhua News Agency reported that the hardest hit Sichuan earthquake directly affected the number of more than 10 million, and their situation, no doubt still very grim. According to the official pointed out that the hardest hit area of Sichuan Province reached 65,000 square kilometers, involving Aba, Mianyang, Deyang and Chengdu, Guangyuan, such as six Ya'an city, seriously affected the counties reached 44, 1061 hit township , The population of about 20 million people. Therefore, the Chinese authorities continue to increase support for several days, but the rescue of more than one, the scheduling, command, control, coordination, it is not easy.

After these days, some dead bodies have begun to corruption, prevent the outbreak of the epidemic, it is not easy. On the 14th of China's Xinhua quoted vice governor of Sichuan Province Cheng-Yun Li pointed out that after the earthquake, ending on the 14th afternoon, the earthquake death toll has reached 14,463. He said that another 14,051 missing and 25,788 people were buried in the rubble pile, 64,746 people were injured. Remedial work, we must speed, but how in a short span a period of time as far as possible to find and deal with the tens of thousands of dead, is certainly a great challenge.Otherwise, once the outbreak of the epidemic, the problem will be even more complex.

Avoid aftershocks caused major casualties, is also imperative. Sichuan disaster areas so far appears on more than 2,000 aftershocks, the strongest a magnitude 6.1 to the strength of a radius of 200 km by the strong impact of the damaged houses collapse at any time of crisis. Victims are afraid to go home now, living in very poor health conditions in tents or even sleeping. The elderly, children less resistance, their health, has no doubt challenge.

In addition, many reservoirs are leaking, in particular cause for concern. Sichuan Province has all kinds of Reservoir Project 6678, of which five large reservoirs, medium-105, 1007-a small, small-II 5561. But God did not create the United States, on the 14th to the early morning, rain in western Sichuan have not yet stopped, seven counties in Chongqing reservoir in a total of 19 different levels of crack and leak, it was reported that the upper reaches of the Minjiang River reservoir could collapse Long map, the situation is very Dangerous. It was also the Voice of China on the 14th, the hardest hit in the earthquake near the Purple Ping Dujiangyan the reservoir "very dangerous" because the reservoir from the earthquake zone very close, 2,000 officers and soldiers have rushed to go to the reservoir proved the present situation, reports Administration may be forced to refer to the flood water to reduce the first down. If the scene Zipingpu Reservoir, downstream of the Dujiangyan Water Control Project even more unthinkable, tens of thousands of homeless victims have been the case may be more severe.

At present, perhaps in the global human concern for the safety of the Chinese victims. In any case difficult, the customs, also Deting the past.:tiphat: http://209.85.171.104/translate_c?h...stnn.cc/ed_china/200805/t20080516_780631.html
