Re: CDC director's udpate brief 7/17/09

Scary. What are their CFR rates based on? Reported/tested cases? Suspected cases? Hospitalized cases?

It really DOES attack people 25-64 worse in severity. See the number of infected by age, percentage of hospitalized by age, then the percent of deaths by age.

Re: CDC director's udpate brief 7/17/09

Re: CDC director's udpate brief 7/17/09

Has the WHO really said no licenced vaccine until 12/09? p. 22

The port surveillance & quarantine is interesting. 100 surge staff for 20 quarantine stations. So, NOW we're going to try to stop it at the border? Or what are these quarantine stations for? (p. 19)

p. 20 Isolation guidance is interesting. Sounds like there will be strong msg to stay home if sick.

Gosh, I wish we could hear the text of the briefing. There's a lot that must be being said which didn't make it onto the slides.....

I have been hearing late this year or early next year for the vaccine. I think it was in a recent briefing and discussed here at FT.

Re: CDC director's udpate brief 7/17/09

Wow, the real fun begins at page 23. I wonder why they don't put up seasonal statistics with this. Even if it doesn't compare due to the fact that it isn't even flu season, they don't have a problem comparing it when they talk of supposed total deaths?

Re: CDC director's udpate brief 7/17/09

Re: CDC director's udpate brief 7/17/09

Something troubling me with the way they do the chart of deaths with purported underlying conditions. Apparently many of those who died had more than one underlying condition, since if you add up the numbers if come up to more than the number of deaths they are reporting on total. Yet they list the number of deaths with an underlying condition significantly lower. They offer no explanation about the prevalence of multiple underlying conditions. Sadly, it is hard to know whether or not to trust that chart since so much of the details are left out.

Me to. There is an article on this somewhere, probably in the thread you mention. In fact there is an article on how nations will be fighting over the stock and how the manufacturing countries might not release until they use all they need first. That sounds like it could be true. By the time we reach December/Jan. assuming the flu is nasty, everyone will be desperate.

Take home message = don't count on a vaccine.

Re: CDC director's udpate brief 7/17/09

Did I read correctly that they say there is no change in the virus in Southern Hemisphere? Does that include what the CDC investigators have discovered in Argentina?

An excerpt from the CDC media conference call today:

Operator: Thank you, our next question comes from Maggie Fox from Reuters.

Maggie Fox: ...And can I ask a question about what′s going on in Argentina as well?

Anne Schuchat @ CDC: Let me start with the general and Argentina question and let others chime in. ... In terms of Argentina, we′re aware, you know there′s been a lot of media coverage of Argentina and there are different conditions being reported for different parts of the country. The 2009 H1N1 influenza strain has been the majority of the viral isolates that have been based on the virological surveillance that we have been able to see. We do have people in the field who have described some intensive care units with the numbers of ill younger people and others that aren′t over capacity. Like here in the United States, we had a lot of variability from area to area, sometimes within a state, of how much disease there was. Like a popcorn pattern where disease was occurring. In Argentina, I think that′s likely a similar situation. I think I may have answered your questions. Do you have a follow?up?
