Two under observation for Ebola in London came from Waterloo Region
By Record staff
The two patients being investigated for Ebola virus disease at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) are from Waterloo Region, local public health officials said Wednesday.
But they represent what London's medical officer of health calls a "vanishingly low" risk to the public.
At about 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 10, two patients were brought by Waterloo Region paramedics to LHSC, which is considered a designated treatment hospital by the province. The patients were not admitted through the Emergency Department and were placed directly in isolation in a negative pressure room at Victoria Hospital.
The pair reported minor symptoms to Waterloo Region Public Health officials and "even though they were deemed very unlikely to be Ebola symptoms, they were referred for a formal assessment at London Health Sciences Centre," officials said in a news release.
"It seems to be a pretty low-risk situation that has been handled with an abundance of caution," said Dr. Christopher Mackie, Medical Officer of Health for the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU). "These are the very first hints of something that may be Ebola. It appears the symptoms have already resolved, we are waiting for confirmation on that."
The two were members of a family coming from Guinea as part of the Government Assisted Refugee Program. Mackie praised the program, which sees people screened for disease before they leave countries and when they arrive in Canada. After they arrive, Mackie said they are monitored proactively.
