Two under observation for Ebola in London came from Waterloo Region

By Record staff

The two patients being investigated for Ebola virus disease at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) are from Waterloo Region, local public health officials said Wednesday.

But they represent what London's medical officer of health calls a "vanishingly low" risk to the public.

At about 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 10, two patients were brought by Waterloo Region paramedics to LHSC, which is considered a designated treatment hospital by the province. The patients were not admitted through the Emergency Department and were placed directly in isolation in a negative pressure room at Victoria Hospital.

The pair reported minor symptoms to Waterloo Region Public Health officials and "even though they were deemed very unlikely to be Ebola symptoms, they were referred for a formal assessment at London Health Sciences Centre," officials said in a news release.

"It seems to be a pretty low-risk situation that has been handled with an abundance of caution," said Dr. Christopher Mackie, Medical Officer of Health for the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU). "These are the very first hints of something that may be Ebola. It appears the symptoms have already resolved, we are waiting for confirmation on that."

The two were members of a family coming from Guinea as part of the Government Assisted Refugee Program. Mackie praised the program, which sees people screened for disease before they leave countries and when they arrive in Canada. After they arrive, Mackie said they are monitored proactively.

Patients under investigation for Ebola Virus Disease at LHSC

As a designated treatment hospital, at approximately 9:45pm this evening, two patients currently under investigation for Ebola Virus Disease were referred to LHSC. The patients were not admitted through the Emergency Department and were placed directly in isolation in a negative pressure room at LHSC’s Victoria Hospital. All safety precautions are fully in place to contain risk.

There is no impact to patient and visitor activity at LHSC.

To protect patient confidentiality, LHSC will not be providing further detail. As this is a public health matter, inquiries should be directed to the Middlesex-London Health Unit.

LHSC’s goal is to ensure every staff member and physician has a safe working environment, and every patient and visitor is protected from exposure to Ebola Virus Disease. As a Ministry of Health designated treatment facility, LHSC is fully prepared to care for Ebola patients.

For more information on LHSC’s preparedness planning, please visit the Ebola Virus Disease page on our website.

The patients have been tested to see if they have the virus, and the results are expected within 24 to 48 hours, according to Dan Flaherty, the communications manager at the Middlesex-London Health Unit.

Dr. Chris Mackie, the medical officer of health for London, said the two patients are family members from the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

"They're both very low risk at this point, two patients from the same family who came to Canada recently and have been closely monitored ever since," said Mackie. "They started to have very low-level symptoms that may or may not be compatible with Ebola, but out of an abundance of caution, they've been transferred to LHSC from outside of the region."
...
According to Mackie, the two patients were in Guinea, though he did not say how recently.

A mother and child being treated for Ebola-like symptoms at the Victoria Hospital in London, Ont. have received negative results for the virus in preliminary blood tests, according to a spokesperson for the Middlesex-London Health Unit.

Preliminary blood samples from both patients, who were transferred to London from Waterloo Region, came back negative. But hospital officials are still waiting on further test results, which they expect in the next few days.

?This is encouraging news, yet we will remain vigilant as we and our partners continue to monitor this situation very closely,? said Dr. Chris Mackie, the medical officer of health for the Middlesex-London Health Unit in a release.

"There are other potential reasons for the symptoms we?re seeing, but until Ebola can be ruled out completely, the protocols and precautions currently in place at Victoria Hospital will continue.?

Initial test results reveal that a mother and child who arrived from West Africa earlier this month do not have Ebola.

Further test results are expected within the next few days.

It was a low-grade fever and another symptom in a mother and child who arrived in Canada Feb. 2 as African refugees that spared a high-profile Ebola response by health officials.

It marks the first test of the region?s Ebola containment system, which is built around London?s Victoria Hospital as the isolation unit for the area from Toronto to Windsor.

According to public-health officials, the mother and child from the African nation of Guinea came to Canada as part of a federal government refugee program. They were screened for the deadly virus before leaving their home country, and again upon arriving here.

The refugee camp in Guinea did not have any cases of Ebola, health officials in London said Wednesday.

Waterloo Region public health officials checked on the pair daily. The two reported feeling unwell Tuesday, each with different symptoms, Mackie said.
