Highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 in British Columbia, October 21, 2024

Canadian Food Inspection Agency
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 in two premises in Chilliwack and one premises in Abbotsford, British Columbia, in commercial poultry.

The CFIA has advised the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) of the confirmed presence of HPAI in Canada. This serves as a strong reminder that HPAI is spreading across the globe, and that anyone with birds must practice enhanced biosecurity procedures.

Three new cases of bird flu in B.C. poultry

Excerpt:
Canadian poultry flocks were briefly free of active HPAI cases. On Oct. 2, the CFIA revoked the last remaining primary control zone around an outbreak associated with a farm in Saskatchewan, an agency spokesperson said in an email yesterday.

This means that certain conditions had been met on the infected premises, and movement restrictions and permit requirements had been lifted.

A petting farm on Vancouver Island says it was forced to cull its entire flock of about 50 chickens and ducks when they contracted the highly infectious avian flu.

In the post to social media, Holly Hill Farm in Campbell River says it is "devastated," noting each bird had a name, but it was forced to kill the flock "to prevent the spread and help protect food sources."

It says Island Health has assured them the risk to their guests is "extremely low," although recent visitors should monitor themselves for flu-like symptoms for 10 says after their visit to the farm.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

This event is the continuation of event 4294. We report 7 new infected premises (IP) in British Columbia. The CFIA has immediately quarantined the IPs and is implementing strict movement controls and a stamping out policy. Primary control zones (PCZ) have been put in place around the IPs. Surveillance is ongoing in the affected areas. HPAI outbreaks are closed, zoning and movement restrictions were lifted, and quarantines were released on all poultry infected premises in all provinces, except British Columbia and Saskatchewan. WOAH data on poultry and non-poultry can be visualized and extracted on the HPAI dashboard in domestic birds available at https://cahss.ca/cahss-networks/poultry-new (select poultry categories to show data related to poultry events 4294 and 5229). Wildlife surveillance as well as the Canadian Notifiable Avian Influenza Surveillance System (CanNAISS) activities for poultry are ongoing in Canada. QUANTITATIVE DATA SUMMARY MEASURING UNIT

Excerpt from post #18:

Investigations and orders of avian influenza in domestic birds by province
...
November 1, 2024 BC-IP172 Regional District of Strathcona British Columbia non-commercial non-poultry N/A N/A

---------------------

Holly Hill’s barnyard petting farm is now closed for the season!

A letter from us:

My heart is broken, and my tears will not stop. We had to say goodbye to every single chicken and duck on our farm. We found out yesterday that our flock of chickens and ducks contracted an incurable avian disease from a wild migratory bird that visited our barnyard. Avian influenza viruses occur naturally among wild aquatic birds worldwide and is prevalent this time of year. Unfortunately, the virus sometimes spreads from wild birds and impacts domestic flocks such as our farm.

Out of the utmost respect for our community and their safety, we contacted Island Health and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency immediately.

We were mandated to kill all of our birds in order to prevent the spread and help protect food sources. As most of you know, my chickens and ducks each had names and were more than just ‘livestock.’ There were about 50. I am devastated. Our flock was humanely killed, and in accordance with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, it will only take about 14 days after the clean to have chickens and ducks again. However, I don’t think my heart can take it; we’ll see.

According to the Government of Canada’s website, “There has only been one human case of A(H5N1) (avian influenza) ever reported in Canada.” This was in a returning traveler in 2014. Island Health has assured us that the risk to our guests was extremely low. However it is recommended that anyone who visited the farm recently should monitor themselves for flu-like symptoms for 10 days from their visit.

It is fortunate that the rest of our animals are safe. In the past, Avian Influenza has occasionally infected other species but these are generally ones that ate infected birds. We will continue to monitor them, as we always do, to ensure they remain in great health.

We live in a small and incredible community; one that we grew up in and have gratefully served for nearly 15 years. But I am rational enough to recognize that this news could easily get distorted and decimate our small business. Will this be the end of Holly Hill Farm? My heart can’t take the thought. I suppose our future is in your hands. I hope you hold us tight.

Sincerely, Katie
Holly Hill Farm, Campbell River
