EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

On November 1st 2024, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was notified of high mortality in a commercial layer farm in the Fraser Valley in British Columbia. The CFIA National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease has confirmed that the virus was H5N2. The virus has HA cleavage site motif “PLREKRRKR/GLF” consistent with highly pathogenic avian influenza strains of H5 subtype. The HA gene segment is A/goose/Guangdong/1996 (Gs/GD) lineage belonging to 2.3.4.4B clade. Phylogenic analysis indicates this virus corresponds to the Eurasian lineage circulating in 2021 in Europe. The CFIA has immediately quarantined the IP and is implementing strict movement controls and a stamping out policy. The farm was already located in a primary control zone as a result of recent detections of HPAI H5N1 (event 5229). Surveillance is ongoing in the affected areas. WOAH data on poultry and non-poultry can be visualized and extracted on the HPAI dashboard in domestic birds available at https://cahss.ca/cahss-networks/poultry-new (select poultry categories to show data related to poultry events 4294, 5229 and 6003). Wildlife surveillance as well as the Canadian Notifiable Avian Influenza Surveillance System (CanNAISS) activities for poultry are ongoing in Canada.

'My heart sank': B.C. farmers devastated by avian flu

Farmers in B.C. are being forced to euthanize hundreds of thousands of birds infected with avian flu.

The third generation farmer in B.C.’s Fraser Valley is still grappling with what started as a disturbing discovery on Halloween and has now ended with the loss of his entire 45,000-bird flock.
...
The sick birds tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza. A team with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) wasn’t far behind, arriving at Siemens’ Abbotsford free-range egg farm to euthanize the thousands of hens and chicks. “They bring in CO2 gas and put the birds down that way, that’s the most humane way possible to take care of them,” Siemens said.

The remains of the chickens and their eggs are then composted to ensure the virus is killed before being removed from the facility. That’s the source of the smell providing Siemens a daily reminder of the devastation, as he now works with the CFIA on mapping out a deep cleaning and disinfection process.
...
There are about seven nearby farms currently affected by outbreaks, according to Siemens, carrying a loss of at least a quarter of a million birds.
...
“When wild birds fly overhead and wind potentially stirs up all of the stuff they’re shedding, it’s very difficult to contain,” said Siemens.

Updated about 2 hours ago

The avian influenza virus has been detected at a non-commercial poultry farm in the capital region, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The CFIA could not immediately respond to questions Thursday, but its website reported that “highly pathogenic avian influenza” was detected on a non-commercial poultry farm in the Capital Regional District on Nov. 21.

The agency defines non-commercial poultry as birds raised in flocks of fewer than 1,000 birds total, and fewer than 300 waterfowl such as ducks and geese, for producing or selling locally or for breeding.

B.C. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham said the virus was found in a flock of about 60 chickens on the Saanich Peninsula. The name and location of the farm was not revealed...
