A man in his 40s from the Vancouver Coastal Health region, who has recently been in Wuhan, China, is the first coronavirus case confirmed in B.C.

Health oficials are only saying that the man, a Canadian resident, lives in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, which includes Richmond, Vancouver, North Shore and the Sea to Sky area up to Bella Coola...

...However, he did arrive via Vancouver Airport last week, but did not show any symptoms until at least 24 hours after his arrival...

“Late yesterday, our BC Centre for Disease Control public health lab confirmed a positive test for 2019-nCoV.

“The person is a male in his forties and a resident in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. He travels regularly to China for work and was in Wuhan city on his most recent trip. He returned to Vancouver last week and had an onset of symptoms after his return.

“On Sunday, Jan. 26, he followed public health messaging, contacted a primary health-care provider to notify them that he had travelled to Wuhan city, was experiencing symptoms and would be coming for assessment and care.

“Following established protocols, the primary-care provider notified the Vancouver Coastal Health medical health officer and administered the diagnostic test.

“Late last night, the test came back positive.

“Public health officials are in regular contact with the individual and a small number of close contacts. He is in isolation at home.

“The risk of spread of this virus within British Columbia remains low at this time. All necessary precautions are being taken to prevent the spread of infection. We have multiple systems in place to prepare for, detect and respond, in order to prevent the spread of serious infectious diseases in the province.

“The BC Centre for Disease Control has a team of experts that support the Province’s operations in monitoring and controlling communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases. The team has developed a diagnostic test for this new coronavirus and is co-ordinating staff and supplies to ensure potential cases can be detected quickly and accurately.

“The PHO is responsible for monitoring and assessing the health status of the population, making recommendations for strategies to address health issues and implementing immediate actions when necessary to protect the health of the public. The PHO has directed health-care workers to be vigilant and to take a travel history for anyone reporting respiratory symptoms.

“It is not necessary for the general public to take special precautions beyond the usual measures recommended to prevent other common respiratory viruses during the winter period. Regular handwashing, coughing or sneezing into your elbow sleeve, disposing of tissues appropriately and avoiding contact with sick people are important ways to prevent the spread of respiratory illness generally.

“Anyone who is concerned they may have been exposed to, or are experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus should contact their primary-care provider, local public health office or call 811.”

Two more people have tested positive for the coronavirus in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, bring the provincial total to four.

Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Thursday afternoon that the two new cases are connected to the woman in her 50s that was revealed Tuesday as being the second confirmed case in the province.

Henry, B.C.'s chief medical health officer, told media that the two new cases are family members of the woman. Henry added that the two new cases are visitors from the Wuhan area, where the virus is believed to have started late last year.

According to Henry, all three people in that household are in self-isolation and are reporting to the health authorities...

A fifth case of coronavirus has been revealed in B.C. on Friday.

The woman is in her 30s and flew into YVR from Shanghai recently, before driving to her home in the B.C. Interior region...

...She flew through Vancouver and drove home in a private vehicle to the Interior. Henry says she began experiencing symptoms upon her arrival and immediately isolated herself at home.

Henry says she eventually reached out to health officials in the Interior about her illness and was placed in isolation in hospital. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control confirmed a presumptive test for coronavirus came back positive Thursday afternoon....

...Vancouver Coastal Health and Interior Health are currently conducting investigations into the small group of people Henry said the patient came into contact with.

Officials are still determining if people on the flights the woman was on need to be contacted, said Henry...

“Today we are announcing a new case of COVID-19 in B.C. A female in her 30s is presumed positive, based on local testing. “Interior Health is actively investigating. Her close contacts have been identified and are being contacted. The patient is in isolation at home.

“This brings the total number of cases in B.C. to five. One is presumed positive. Four, located in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, have been confirmed positive by the NML and remain in isolation. Public health teams are providing ongoing care and support to all five individuals.

“As of Feb. 14, the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has tested almost 500 people for COVID-19. The testing numbers are posted each Friday on the BCCDC website. In B.C., we have selected testing criteria with an intentionally low threshold to ensure a wide range of people are eligible for COVID-19 testing.

“The risk of spread of this virus within British Columbia remains low at this time. We continue to monitor the outbreak closely and will notify the public if the measures in B.C. change.

A sixth person in B.C. is believed to be infected with the novel coronavirus, health officials announced Thursday.

The latest patient is a woman in her 30s who lives in the Fraser Health region, according to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. She had recently returned from travel to Iran and is now recovering at home, Henry said.

Henry described the woman's infection as relatively mild, but said she has had contact with others since her return from Iran last week. Close family members are currently in isolation and being monitored by public health officials...
 
Henry said officials were surprised when they learned the woman had only visited Iran, and not China or neighbouring countries that have seen the bulk of COVID-19 cases.

A passenger who was on an Air Canada flight on February 14 had a coronavirus (COVID-19). The passenger who had left Iran for Vancouver made a stopover in Montreal.

TVA News obtained an internal Air Canada memo distributed to its employees to inform them that the infected lady had traveled with them from Montreal to Vancouver.

The airline was notified by the British Columbia Center for Disease Control (BC CDC).

BC CDC will contact the employees concerned and the passengers who were three rows in front and three rows behind the traveler.

Air Canada still wanted to share it with all of its personnel involved. "The risk is considered low enough that the crew members do not need to be isolated, but must monitor for the 14 days following the day of the flight and report the symptoms to a health professional, if they were to develop it, ”one can read.

For reasons of confidentiality, the BC CDC did not give many details on the passenger. However, it is known that she had a dry cough and had mild flu-like symptoms during her flight from Montreal to Vancouver.

Air Canada confirmed that it was informed by authorities on February 22, that the passenger screening test was positive.

"We invite you to contact the British Columbia Center for Infectious Disease Control for more information, as the authorities follow up with passengers," said Air Canada.
