New research by a pair of UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine scientists confirms previous theories that people 65 and older may be protected from the most serious effects of the novel H1N1 virus by many decades' worth of previous exposure to other flu viruses.

"The more you're exposed to viruses that can stimulate all types of immune response, the better protected you're likely to be," said Dr. Carol Cardona, a UC Davis veterinarian and Cooperative Extension specialist, who partnered in the research with Dr. Zheng Xing.

"There does seem to be some level of antibody protection that people over 65 seem to have. There are some good things about getting older."

The duo's findings will appear in the November edition of Emerging Infectious Diseases, a journal published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In their research, Xing and Cardona surveyed data from earlier studies of the swine flu epidemic, identifying specific molecular sites � or epitopes � that strains of H1N1 found in California, New York and Texas share with the seasonal influenza A virus.

They theorize that those shared epitopes result in a degree of immunity to the new virus among people who have already been exposed to the seasonal flu, either through illness or through vaccination.

Their research also suggests that the epitopes involved with novel H1N1 exposure stimulate a kind of immunity in which T-cells attack and clear out pathogens. That's a different kind of immunity than one involving a protective antibody.

"It's really complicated, and it's hard to explain well
in the media," said Cardona. "PacMan is the image that people generally use," she said in describing the kind of immunity she and Xing theorize. "But we're getting to the point where a lot of people don't know what PacMan is."

She cautions that people with some immunity may still come down with novel H1N1, but their symptoms are likely to be mild.

Both Xing and Cardona have also worked extensively in the past on avian flu research.

What they are saying is, if one has accumulated antibody from other (seasonal) influenza viruses or vaccination, one may derive some protection against H1N1, although it may be incomplete. They did not say that people who have had H1N1 infection or H1N1 vaccination are at risk for a second infection.

A portion of the population is affected by each wave. Who and how many are determined by:
-virulence of the virus
-environmental/living conditions
-health of the individual/population
-degree of exposure (contact with others)
-luck

- transmissibility of the virus

so, why do RSV waves end ? Weather ?
RSV is fairly unique in that the host does not develop immunity subsequent to infection. There are a number of factors as to why RSV and other viral infections are more common in the Fall and Winter months. Colder weather is one factor. Some viruses like colder noses to settle in. Probably the greatest factor is the start of the school year/daycare and increased crowding of people.

There are other factors that influence the "seasonality" of virus infections. Competition with other viruses, crowding, etc. Not likely to be immunity in this case, as the host does not develop immunity to RSV.

SUMMARYHong Kong has a subtropical climate and an influenza seasonality lying approximately mid-way (March-June) between those of the Northern (November-March) and Southern (June-September) hemispheres. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) shares a similar seasonality to that of influenza in Hong Kong and is another important respiratory infection of childhood. Daily virus incidence data from public hospitals in Hong Kong's New Territory East Cluster, together with Hong Kong climate data were obtained for 2000-2007. Statistical time-series analysis using monthly time windows showed that influenza A and RSV incidence increased with higher environmental relative humidity, whereas influenza B incidence decreased with higher environmental temperatures. The other climate variables (including vapour pressure as a measure of absolute humidity) were not significantly related to the incidence of these respiratory viruses. Data from this study further reinforces the concept that the relationship between climate factors and respiratory virus incidence differ between subtropical/tropical and temperate countries.

There is a RSV 'vaccine' but it isn't like a normal vaccine. It does not create long lasting immunity. It has to be given every month during season to prevent or reduce severity of infection.

W. Va. doctor says she's caught H1N1 twice now

CROSS LANES, W.Va.--A Cross Lanes pediatrician says she came down with swine flu twice in two months, and she's among the medical professionals who are puzzled by the occurrence.

Dr. Debra Parsons, a pediatrician at Kid Care West in Cross Lanes, said both she and her son came down with identical flu-like symptoms in August.

Figuring they had the same disease, Parsons swabbed herself and sent the specimen off to a lab. She tested positive for Influenza A, which includes several strains of the flu.

Health officials say that in this region more than 99 percent of people who have been testing positive for Influenza A are later confirmed to have swine flu.

Parsons said that was the case with her family; a more specific follow-up "sub-typing" test at the state lab confirmed she had H1N1.

Parsons and her son recovered from the symptoms but in October they struck again and were much worse, she said. Both had body aches, fever, chills, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

This time Parsons swabbed both herself and her son, and both tests came back positive for Influenza A. She said she pushed for further testing to determine the strain, and the lab ran an immunofluorescence test on the specimens. They again tested positive for H1N1, she said.

Parsons' second swab was sent to the state lab Wednesday for even further testing and results should be returned in a couple of days or sent to the Centers for Disease Control for follow-up tests, she said.

When the initial test came back positive again, Parsons said she also contacted the CDC to see if it's possible for someone to contact the swine flu twice.

She said officials at the CDC told her Saturday that it is possible


But in public statements issued in late October the CDC said people who have had H1N1 don't need to get the vaccine because they can't contract the virus again.

Parsons said she's struggling to make sense of her diagnoses and reconcile them with other information she has heard.

"I don't want to mislead anybody," Parsons said. "I've been a doctor here 13 years, and I have a ton of patients, and I want to know what to tell them."

She said her office is doing 10 to 20 flu tests every day as more and more patients come in with symptoms.

Dr. Rahul Gupta, director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, said Wednesday he is unaware of any evidence that a person can contract H1N1 twice.

"I'm aware of no data or scientific body of research or case reports in the medical or scientific world of an individual acquiring the 2009 H1N1 influenza twice," he said.

John Law, spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Resources, said the information his agency has is that the likelihood of getting the virus twice is "very, very, very rare."

"Once you have had it, you have a natural immunity to it. It's like the mumps or the chicken pox," Law said.

Gupta said he is trying to get in touch with the CDC to make a further inquiry, and Parsons said she also is trying to follow up with the federal agency.

Gupta said nothing right now would lead him to believe the virus has mutated.

"There is absolutely no evidence to assert that," he said. "In fact, (Center for Disease Control director) Dr. Tom Frieden has issued a press release...and he states that the virus is genetically stable. I believe him."

Gupta questioned the possibility that a test might have been botched.

"There's always a likelihood that they can be false positive," he said.

Parsons said her initial swine flu diagnosis came from a preliminary chain reaction test from the state lab that she said is one of the most accurate.

In the meantime, Parsons has seen her physician and is treating the minor flu symptoms that remain. She said she's rescheduled many of her patients' appointments until she's completely on the mend.

"For their good and mine," she said.

As i've said in previous posts, I believe my family and I have had it a few times. April, July and September. We just returned from a month and a half long trip to California where many were sick. The plane home was full of sick people, even a 3 yr old with "the cough" behind us..its been 2 weeks with no illness.

Seems there is a good chance of some immunity now..

SO...if being infected and successfully fighting off the infection does not build sufficient antibodies to prevent reinfection, what implications this have for the vax?:confused:

Thank You very much Roehl,

and thanks Legadillo, and the other FT's who from the begining said they have suspect, or confirmed, multiple infections from flu bugs.

Now it is important to understand if the pandemic flu vaccine (as speculated in other threads) could rise other body immune resources, more heavier (because non-ilnessed, only activate the immunity) with the usage of a vaccine,
or it will be stil not enaugh to divert multiple infections.
There were prior posts about at FT.

Additionaly, there were early reports from Mexico, of several flu strains roaming jointly, at the time.
The same multiple flu bugs infections seems now unleashed in Ucraina / India / ../.

There are stil questions to be answered.

But at least, now we know (as many professionals /.../ stated),
that flu parties are not good, but harming.

The possible harm from pandemic vacs, or sheding virus from inhalers vaccs, is another question.

let people report online to CDC when they think they had it twice.
Collect the data and do occasional tests, whether they reported correctly

Woman cured of swine flu, falls prey to H1N1 again

SURAT: At least 100 positive swine flu cases were reported from Surat and 19 deaths till date. What has added to the worry of the health department
is the fear of recurrence of the disease in cured patients.

One such case has been reported in the city. A 35-year-old housewife from Nana Varacha was infected with H1N1 and was admitted for treatment in SMIMER in October first week.

She underwent the test and reported positive following which, the woman was put through full course of medication. She was released from the hospital after 10 days. However, she was readmitted with suspected swine flu last weekend and has been tested positive again. The woman was given the treatment again and was released from the hospital a few days ago.

"She had a mild infection and so was cured clinically and sent home," said Dr Hemant Desai, medical officer, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).

"This is a big worry. The second wave is likely to come in December January and we have no mechanism in place wherein cured patients can be tested and be absolutely certain that they would no longer be infected with H1N1," said a doctor treating swine flu patients in New Civil Hospital (NCH).

"We don't test the cured patients at the time of their release so the chances of recurrence are there," Dr Desai said.

Dr S Mulla, professor and head of the department of Microbiology, NCH, said, "We have no procedure in place for re-testing."

"Generally, a patient who is cured develops natural immunity towards the disease after undergoing the course of medication. However, he is likely to get some new infection that could again lead to recurrence of the disease,"Dr Desai added.

Meanwhile, there were no new positive cases reported from the city. There were at present seven patients who were receiving treatment in NCH for H1N1.
