SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grieving mother says the flu was the main cause in the death of her healthy teenage son.

Cellphone video captured a smiling Brian Finete, 19, surprising his mother with flowers for her birthday last Tuesday night at their home in Clairemont.

"The moment was special. He was always a happy boy with a big heart. He loved life and always wanted to make people happy," said Maria Finete.

Later that night, Finete played Xbox all night with his friend at his home. Just past 4 a.m., he went to the bathroom. About two hours later, the friend woke up and went looking for him. Finete was found collapsed in the bathroom...

San Diego Flu Deaths Reach 63: HHSA

Six more flu-related deaths have been reported this season, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday, as the county works to secure financial resources for possible coronavirus cases.

The season’s total number of flu deaths has reached 63, officials confirmed. The ages of the six new flu deaths ranged from 55 to 84, and the patients all had underlying medical conditions. Comparatively by this time last year, there were 35 flu-related deaths.

County Flu Deaths Rise To 80, Exceeding Last Season’s Toll

On the day a coronavirus-positive case was announced in Chula Vista, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Thursday that a half-dozen influenza-related deaths were recorded last week in San Diego County, bringing the number of fatalities so far this flu season to 80 — more than last flu season's entire toll.

As of this time last year, the county had recorded 44 flu deaths. Last season's deaths totaled 77.
