CA DPH: 80 total deaths (19 new) in California

The latest numbers are out from the California Dept. of Public Health for the period ending 7/30/09. It states that 80 people have died of swine flu in CA so far and reports 699 hospitalizations. (Last week's report mentioned 61 deaths, so there have been 19 new deaths in California reported in the last week.)

For comparative purposes, do we know the population of Ca - i.e what is the death rate per 100,000 in this area?

California's population is about 35 million, the same as Canada's. I believe California now has considerably more deaths than Canada or the UK (pop. 60 million). And it also has the dubious distinction of having the most number of deaths of any state in the US (NY has 73 at latest count).

And yet, we haven't heard very much about the severity of the epidemic in the state - very little from the state public health authorities and almost zilch from the press. If you were to ask a random person whether the epidemic is more severe in the UK or in California, I bet almost everyone would pick the UK. Most people - including people in the state - seem to think things have been pretty mild so far in California. But we've had many more deaths - and for a smaller population - than the UK.

Wow! Pretty startling to see such high numbers, especially when we hear almost nothing about it being here in the Golden State. I did get my letter to the editor of our local paper published on 7/28 (Press Democrat) urging the Sonoma County Health Department to show leadership in communicating clearly and honestly with the public about H1N1. They had announced (after the uproar over the 39-year old Petaluma man's death) that they would no longer announce swine flu deaths at all. It seems to be "don't ask, don't tell" in California, as in many other places.

I've never tried to calculate a mortality rate, but if I have done this right, it is 0.24 per 100,000 people in California. Can someone tell me if I have done this right?
