Dengue causes more deaths in the history of SP
In 2010 were recorded at least 55 deaths in the state, the year is the 2nd in number of notifications
May 11, 2010 | 10h 03

AE - State Agency

The epidemic of dengue occurring this year in S?o Paulo has caused the greatest number of deaths in the history of the disease in the state - at least 55 - and is second in total cases - 69 148 - losing only to the registered in 2007 . The total number of patients in 2010 already accounts for 74.8% computed in 2007, the year that were reported 92 345 cases of the disease. The city of Ribeirao Preto, Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Ara?atuba, Guaruja Santos lead.

The Ministry of Health failed to disclose on the site to monitor the disease to official figures on casualties, although dengue fever is compulsory notification in accordance with Brazilian law. It has also refused to grant interviews on the topic. Yesterday, the folder only provided data on deaths after questioned, then only the number this year.

In January 2010, the Ministry of Health warned that the reemergence of dengue type 1 virus could cause epidemics in S?o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Goias, Mato Grosso do Sul, Roraima, Tocantins and Piaui, due to the population of these sites do not have contact with this serotype since the beginning of the last decade.

However, data from the government of S?o Paulo revealed that in 2008, there were just over one third of the planned support visits to Sao Paulo in the homes of outbreaks of mosquito control and prevention guidelines. The main preventive action against dengue is to prevent the accumulation of water used by the disease to mosquito breeding.

Exchange of mayors

In a statement, the state government said that the visits are activities that support and, as in 2008 there was low transmission, no need for such actions to combat the mosquito fogging. Besides blaming the rains and high temperatures in recent months by the epidemic, the government reported that the exchanges of the mayors may have caused the epidemic and that "people's participation is a key factor in control." The information is the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.

State investigates 14 deaths from dengue

Jornal do Commercio

Already reaches 14 the number of Pernambuco who died with suspected dengue this year. The data contained in new epidemiological bulletin of the State Health Department, which does not include the first confirmed death in Recife. In addition to seven deaths under investigation in the capital, the state accounts for two in Garanhuns in a Passira and the remainder in Barreiros, Água Preta, Salgueiro and Petrolina. Two others, one in Jaboatão Guararapes and another in São José do Belmonte, have been discarded.

Regarding the previous newsletter, the number of people with signs of the disease rose from 8840 to 9378. Confirmed cases also increased from 428 to 629, with ten of the hemorrhagic form. The comparison with the same period last year indicating a growth of 174.13%, a slight decrease from the previous week, when the rate of increase compared to 2009 was 185.25%.

To avoid the increase in cases of illness and risk of death caused by dengue, everyone must help. See the tips to stop the mosquito:

• Any vessel where there may be accumulation of water presents a danger because it favors the proliferation of Aedes aegypti mosquito, which differs from muriçoca common to have black and white stripes. 70% of outbreaks are in the houses. So nothing to stop water accumulated in containers, tanks, vessels, tanks and cisterns. If you need to save water, let the tank and capped.

• Pools are also without using a risk for dengue mosquito breeding. Just a little water, like a puddle, and there are larvae.

• The most common symptoms of dengue are high fever, body aches, headaches and eye and red spots on the skin. There may also be bleeding.

Complaints may be made by telephone 0800 281 1520, number of Health Department of Recife. The call is free.

The Health Department of Ribeir?o Preto reported Friday a second suspected death from H1N1 influenza, swine flu, in less than a week. The Thais student Brenda Lee, 16, died last Thursday at the Santa Casa, with the bleeding could be caused by the disease.

The case is similar to the adolescent student Heli Il?rio Elton, also 16, died last Tuesday with pulmonary hemorrhage. According to Secretary of Health, St?nio Miranda, the two cases will be subjected to tests of more than one disease.

"Two deaths with diagnosis of various hypotheses. We must investigate these cases but still have no confirmed H1N1. It would be strange since having the first two cases of death, but we can not exclude this hypothesis," he says.

Brenda began to feel ill on Saturday. With high fever and spots on the body, she went through UBDS (Basic District Health Unit) of Quintino Facci two in the northern zone, and was diagnosed with suspected dengue.

"Brenda told her friends that were with dengue fever and missed the lesson last week because he needed to rest," said an official of the state school Othniel Mota, where the girl was studying in high school.

The teenager returned to the clinic at least two more opportunities because the fever did not yield, but was treated and dispensed at all times.

Suspected neglect

Like Brenda, passed by Elton Heli UBDS Sumarezinho and was excused. The boy's father, the retired Ijair Il?rio, believes there was negligence in attendance. "He was attended to only so much I persist," he says.

Furthermore

The Health Department does not intend to do any research on the care of UBDSs (Basic Unit District Health), at least for now.

The minister, St?nio Miranda, was not available for comment late on Friday on suspicion of poor service in the case of Brenda Lee, but in the morning said he did not consider that the teen Heli Il?rio Elton has been the victim of medical negligence of UBDS Sumarezinho.
