Monkey pox in Belgium: for the first time in Belgium, a woman has been infected

August 10, 2022 at 03:11 - update August 10, 2022 at 07:43

During a press briefing organized this morning by the Federal Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke, Dr Boudewijn Catry Head of the Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antibiotic Resistance Department at Sciensano stated that for the first time in Belgium a woman was infected with smallpox. monkey.

Among the other people whose sex is known, there are 541 cases which concern men aged between 16 and 71, with an average age of around 37 years. Most patients contracted the virus through male-to-male sexual contact (91%). If the experts fear contamination by contact with affected patients, no one has been infected in this way.

Since the start of the epidemic, 546 cases have been detected in Belgium, according to the latest consolidated (therefore reliable) figures from Sciensano, which date from August 5. More than half of the cases (304) were identified in Flanders, 187 in Brussels and 55 in Wallonia. According to specialists, the number of new infections seems to be peaking, but it is also true that the figures for the last three weeks cannot yet be taken into account: they will confirm whether there is stagnation or not.

So far, 96% of patients have had skin lesions at some point in the course of the disease. Three out of four also had flu-like symptoms such as fever, feeling sick or swollen lymph nodes, but it is also possible to develop the skin lesions without having had the fever. A few patients, on the other hand, only developed local symptoms, such as inflammation of the throat or anus or urethra.

A total of 28 people were hospitalized, including three because they could not isolate themselves at home and four hospitalized without a specific reason being given. On the other hand, there were neither intensive care admissions nor deaths.

A child under the age of 3 contracted monkeypox in Belgium: "It's very exceptional"

News

Published on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at 9:18 p.m. By Sudinfo with Belga

A case of monkeypox has been reported in a child under three years of age.

Belgium has recorded 671 confirmed cases of monkeypox since the start of the epidemic, according to the latest figures from the Sciensano institute published on Tuesday. The number of new cases seems to be stabilizing, since a week ago the total was 624 cases.

These are 360 cases in Flanders (54%), 236 in Brussels (35%) and 75 in Wallonia (11%), the vast majority of men.

Thirty-one people were hospitalized, but none required intensive care. No fatal cases have been reported. But this Tuesday evening, a case of monkeypox was reported in a child under three years old. "It's very exceptional," says Marc Van Ranst at the Nieuwsblad. "For reasons we don't yet know, the virus appears to be less transmissible here than the versions we know from West Africa," he adds.

For his part, Steven Van Gucht explains that “it is probably a child who was infected by his parents”. “We know from abroad that it very rarely happens that an infection is transmitted from parent to child. It is therefore not surprising that this also happens here. Children usually have mild infections. »
