The number of COVID-19 patients in B.C. hospitals has decreased for the third week in a row.

There were 421 test-positive patients in hospital as of Thursday, a drop of 52 from last week, according to the latest numbers on the B.C. Center for Disease Control's COVID-19 dashboard.

That total has fallen by approximately 30 per cent since reaching 596 on May 12, during the height of the sixth wave, and has decreased for four of the last five weeks.

The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients reported by the B.C. government each week includes those with serious illness and those who were admitted to hospital for reasons unrelated to COVID-19, then tested positive incidentally.

Since the province switched to this "census" method of counting hospitalizations in January, the highest number of patients in hospital on a Thursday has been 985, and the lowest has been 255.

The total also includes patients in intensive care. There were 41 such patients as of Thursday, a decrease of just one from last week...

The number of COVID-19 patients in B.C. hospitals has declined again, dropping below 400 for the first time since mid-April.

There were 325 test-positive patients in hospitals in the province as of Thursday, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. That's the lowest hospital census B.C. has seen since April 7.

The number of patients in intensive care with COVID-19 has dipped below 20 as a downward trend in hospitalizations continues, according to the latest data from the province.

As of Wednesday, 276 people with COVID are in hospital, including 19 in intensive care, according to the B.C. COVID-19 dashboard.

That's a decrease in overall hospitalizations of around 15 per cent from last Thursday, when the province reported 325 people in hospital. The number of ICU patients is less than half of what it was two weeks ago, when the province had 41 people with COVID in intensive care.

The government says its weekly numbers are preliminary. It has been retroactively adjusting them due to delays in the count and the new way it measures weekly cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

The numbers released Thursday are part of a relatively recent change in approach from B.C. health officials, both in the move to weekly reporting and in how certain metrics are calculated.

Much of the data from the province is in a weekly report from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, which includes cases, hospital admissions and deaths — although all of those numbers are at least five days old.

The province is reporting 50 deaths between June 5 and 11. That number, which is being reported differently than in the past, includes the death of anyone who tested positive for COVID-19 within the last 30 days, whether or not the disease has been confirmed as a contributing factor in their death.

The number of deaths is also likely to change significantly by next week...

COVID-19: Cases in B.C. hospitals hold steady, but admissions trending down
By Simon Little Global News
Posted June 23, 2022 5:12 pm

After several weeks of marked declines, the number of people with COVID-19 in British Columbia hospitals held nearly steady over the past week, but the number of admissions appears to be trending steadily downward.

As of Thursday there were 273 cases in hospital, a one-week decline of just three, and 28 cases in intensive care, a one-week increase of nine, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

Under B.C.’s “census” reporting model, all positive cases are counted regardless of the reason the patient was admitted to hospital.

The BCCDC also reported 642 cases for the week ending June 18, though due to restrictions on PCR testing the true figure is likely significantly higher...

COVID-19 cases, deaths down from previous week
COVID-19 case counts showing typical summer decline.

As B.C. enters its third summer since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, infections continue to fall, as they typically do during the summer months.

While COVID-19 case counts are down across Canada, public health officials are concerned there could be a spike in certain Omicron variant infections, such as the BA.4 and BA.5, entering the fall flu season.

Canada’s chief public health officer is therefore urging all Canadians to get a third vaccine, as two doses offer less protection against Omicron strains.

In its weekly update, for the period of June 19 to 25, the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) reports that there were 620 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C., 169 hospital admissions, and 17 deaths.

That’s down from 642 new cases, 273 hospitalizations and 32 deaths for the previous reporting period of June 12 to 18, and down from 62 deaths reported for the week of June 5 to 11.

Since switching to weekly reporting, the BCDC now provides COVID-19 data from the previous week...

B.C.'s health minister confirmed the province is entering its third wave of the Omicron COVID-19 variant as hospitalizations jumped 35 per cent in the last week.

A day after Ontario announced its third wave, Adrian Dix said cases in British Columbia are also trending upwards, though not as significantly as hospitalizations.

"We're not seeing a major increase in critical care in the most severe outcomes for people who are in hospital and are positive for COVID-19," said Dix in an interview with Early Edition host Stephen Quinn.

As of Thursday, 369 people are in hospital with the novel coronavirus, including 36 in intensive care, according to the B.C. COVID-19 dashboard...

COVID-19: Cases in hospital dip, but admissions rise for 4th straight week
By Simon Little Global News

The total number of patients with COVID-19 in B.C. hospitals dropped Thursday, but hospital admissions climbed for the fourth consecutive week.

As of July 21 there were 406 COVID-positive patients in hospital, a drop of 20 over last Thursday, and the first decline since mid-June. There were 30 patients in ICU, a drop of four, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

Under B.C.’s “census” reporting model, all positive cases are counted regardless of the reason the patient was admitted to hospital.

The BCCDC’s Thursday update also reported 1,044 new cases in the week ending July 16. PCR testing remains heavily restricted, however, with just over 11,000 tests conducted that week.

The province-wide test positivity rate sat at 12.8 per cent, the highest it has been since mid-February...

British Columbia is reporting a small uptick in critical care admissions due to COVID-19, with a slight decrease in overall hospitalizations, according to the latest pandemic data provided by health authorities Thursday.

As of Thursday, 401 people are in hospital after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, including 35 people in critical care, according to the B.C. COVID-19 dashboard.

There were 410 COVID-19-positive patients in B.C. hospitals Thursday, an increase of nine from last week, but within the same general range the province has seen since mid-July.

The number of patients receiving critical care, meanwhile, rose slightly to 38, the highest level seen since early June.

Hospitalization totals in B.C. include both those who have serious cases of COVID-19 requiring hospital care and those who are admitted to hospitals for other reasons and test positive incidentally.

Since the province switched to this "hospital census" model for counting hospitalizations, there have been as many as 985 test-positive patients in B.C. hospitals and as few as 255.

Health officials have previously estimated that about half of the people reported in hospital with COVID-19 at any given time were hospitalized for reasons unrelated to the coronavirus and tested positive incidentally.

The Health Ministry cited high numbers of incidental hospitalizations, along with the lack of comprehensive testing and waning vaccine immunity as reasons why the B.C. Centre for Disease Control recently stopped reporting case outcomes by vaccination status on its COVID-19 Surveillance Dashboard.

The BCCDC reports 983 new, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 for the week of July 24 to 30, the most recent full "epidemiological week." ...

British Columbia is reporting a decline in the number of people in hospital who have tested positive for COVID-19 and a sharp drop in the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care.

Data from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control shows 398 people in hospital with COVID-19, down about three per cent from the week before. Twenty-two patients are in critical care, the lowest total since mid-June and a drop of more than 40 per cent from last week when there were 38 people in the ICU.

A total of 28 people died within a month of testing positive for COVID-19 between July 31 and Aug. 6, according to the province, bringing the number of lives lost to 3,995. The number of deaths between July 24 and July 30 has been revised upwards to 54, nearly double the number reported last week.

B.C. surpasses 4,000 COVID-19-related deaths as hospitalizations dip slightly
Province reports 366 people in hospital with the virus this week and 22 in critical care
CBC News · Posted: Aug 18, 2022 6:05 PM PT | Last Updated: August 18

British Columbia reached a grim milestone this week, recording 24 new deaths due to COVID-19, pushing the total number of people who have died since the beginning of the pandemic over 4,000 to 4,037.

The province is reporting a slight drop in the number of people in hospital who have tested positive for COVID-19, while the number of patients in critical care with the virus remains the same.

On Thursday, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control shared its latest COVID-19 data, which showed 366 people in hospital — a decrease of about seven per cent —and 22 people in critical care, the same number as last week.

4 in 10 recent deaths linked to COVID-19 were actually caused by the virus: BCCDC
By Simon Little Global News
Posted September 1, 2022 6:22 pm

An average of just over four in 10 deaths linked to COVID-19 in B.C. between April and mid-August were actually caused by the virus, reports the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

The BCCDC’s most recent situation report reports 1,110 deaths since the province moved to its “30 day all cause mortality” reporting model on April 2. The virus was listed as the underlying cause for 427 of them.

Investigators are still investigating the underlying cause of 107 fatalities during that timeframe, but have confirmed COVID-19 was not the underlying cause of the remaining 576 deaths.

That “30 day all cause mortality” model includes all deaths within 30 days of a patient testing positive for the virus, no matter the cause of death. Officials have acknowledged it results in an overestimation of the true number of deaths caused by COVID-19...

...Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 cases in B.C. hospitals has fallen to its lowest level since the end of June, according to Thursday’s update from the BCCDC.

As of Sept. 1, there were 306 positive cases in B.C. hospitals, a decrease of 25 from a week prior, and 25 cases in critical care, a decrease of four.

The province counts all positive cases in the hospital, regardless for the reason a patient was admitted.

Hospital admissions also appear to be continuing a gradual downward trend, as of the seven-day counting period ending Aug. 27.

The BCCDC reported 160 COVID-positive admissions during that timeframe, however, the data is preliminary and weekly admission data has been consistently revised and significantly increased...

COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. begin to rise as province braces for early flu season
367 people are currently in hospital with the virus, 30 in critical care
CBC News · Posted: Sep 29, 2022 5:20 PM PT | Last Updated: September 29

COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. are up this week, bucking a general downward trend that started in late July.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported 367 people in hospital with the virus Thursday, an increase of 20 per cent from last week's numbers when there were 305 people in hospital. Thirty people are in critical care.

Provincial health authorities reported 16 new deaths linked to COVID-19, bringing the total number of COVID-related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,283.

The government says the weekly numbers it shares are preliminary and are often changed retroactively due to delays in the count and a new method the province uses to measure weekly cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

Deaths are now calculated based on whether they occurred within 30 days of a positive COVID-19 test, whether or not the coronavirus has been confirmed as the underlying cause. The centre says it is evaluating the cause of each person's death retroactively to better understand "true COVID-19 mortality.''...

COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. are up slightly again this week as the province moves into the fall respiratory illness season.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported 369 people in hospital with the virus Thursday, an increase of two patients from last week's report. The number of people in critical care has fallen by one to 29.

In the week leading up to Oct. 1, 19 new deaths were reported among people who tested positive for the coronavirus within the previous 30 days. That brings the total number of deaths potentially linked to the disease to 4,321.

A total of 697 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by B.C. labs in the same week, marking a 9.6-per-cent increase from the previous week. Case totals are understood to be significant underestimates of the true spread of the disease because most people are now testing themselves at home...
