As of Thursday, March 31, 2022, 90.8% (4,528,450) of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 87.3% (4,352,964) have received their second dose.

In addition, 93.5% (4,331,950) of eligible people 12 and older have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 91.1% (4,220,991)have received their second dose and 57.5% (2,667,279) have received a third dose.

Also, 93.8% (4,056,892) of all eligible adults in B.C. have received their first dose, 91.5% (3,956,215) have received their second dose and 59.3% (2,564,549) have received a third dose.

B.C. is reporting 249 new cases of COVID-19, including one epi-linked case, for a total of 356,501 cases in the province.

The new cases include:

B.C. moves to weekly ‘surveillance’ approach to COVID-19 data reporting

British Columbia health officials released their first update Thursday under a new model that will see COVID-19 data released weekly instead of daily.

The updates, released on Thursday, will include data covering a one-week period up to the prior Saturday. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control’s COVID-19 dashboard will also move from daily to weekly updates, which include a census of the number of people in hospital and intensive care.

The first weekly report covers the period from March 27 to April 2, while the dashboard is accurate as of April 7...

...The shift in reporting comes as the province enters what some experts believe is a sixth wave of the pandemic.

After declining steadily for nearly two months, the number of cases in B.C. hospitals has grown by 27 per cent over the past two weeks.

As of April 7, there were 324 cases of COVID-19 in B.C. hospitals, including 38 cases in critical or intensive care.

According to the B.C. CDC’s first weekly report, the province reported 1,706 new COVID-19 cases and 193 COVID-19 hospital admissions between March 27 and April 2...

COVID-19: Cases in B.C. hospitals up 43 per cent since mid-March

The number of COVID-19 cases in B.C.’s hospitals has climbed by 40 in the last week, provincial health officers said in their second update since moving to weekly data reporting.

According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control there were 364 cases in hospital as of Thursday, including 36 cases in ICU, a drop of two.

The number of cases in hospital is now up 43 per cent from it’s 2022 low of 254 on March 22.

Since last Thursday, B.C. has confirmed another 1,760 new cases of COVID-19, however limited access to PCR testing means that figure significantly underestimates the true case count. The province conducted just 29,240 molecular tests over the last week.

Under the new reporting method, B.C. has also changed the way it counts deaths and is now providing data on hospital admissions, however, both figures come with a one-week delay.

Officials reported 233 COVID-19 hospital admissions over the week of April 3 to April 9, up three from the week prior.

Of those admissions, 108 were in the Fraser Health region, 34 were in the Interior Health region, 14 were in the Northern Health region, 43 were in the Vancouver Coastal Health region and 34 were in the Island Health region.

British Columbia’s latest weekly data report shows the number of COVID-19 cases in hospitals has climbed more than 33 per cent since last Thursday.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported 485 cases in hospitals, up from 364. The number of patients in critical or intensive care climbed by just two, to 38.

The province also added another 2,036 confirmed cases over the past week, but only conducted 26,872 PCR tests, meaning the figure is likely a significant under-representation of the true case count.

British Columbia’s new weekly data reporting regime also provides information on hospital admissions, though with a one-week delay.

According to the BCCDC, 238 people were admitted to hospital with COVID-19 between April 10 and April 16...

British Columbia is reporting an increase of 85 COVID-19 cases in hospital and nine in intensive care over the last week.

According to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, there were 570 cases in hospital and 47 cases in critical or intensive care as of Thursday.

The figures represent a 17.5 per cent increase in hospitalizations and a 23.6 per cent increase in cases in ICU over the previous week.

Thursday’s update also confirmed 2,276 new cases over the past week. However, just 26,872 PCR tests were conducted over that period, meaning the figure is likely a significant underrepresentation of the virus’ spread.

British Columbia’s new weekly data reporting regime also provides information on hospital admissions, though with a one-week delay.

According to the BCCDC, 335 people were admitted to hospital with COVID-19 between April 17 and April 23...

B.C. COVID-19 hospitalizations decline for first time since March in latest update

For the first time since British Columbia transitioned to weekly reporting of COVID-19 data, the number of people in hospital with the disease has declined.

As of Thursday, there were 550 test-positive patients in hospital, down from 570 at this time last week. Among those in hospital were 39 people in critical care, down from 47 last Thursday.

B.C.'s COVID-19 hospitalization data includes both those with serious illness requiring hospitalization and those who are in hospital for other reasons and test positive for the coronavirus during routine screening.

Since the province switched to this "hospital census" model in January, there have been as many as 985 patients in hospital on a Thursday and as few as 255.

The decline in hospitalizations this week marks a departure from the recent trend, which had seen total hospitalizations more than double since the end of March.

While the decline in hospitalizations may indicate that the pandemic's sixth wave has peaked in B.C., other data released Thursday was a mixed bag.

In B.C., there are currently 596 people in the hospital with COVID-19, 54 of whom are in critical care.

There are 73 people in the hospital with COVID in Island Health, and three in critical care.

Between May 1 and May 7, there were 331 hospital admissions and 59 people who died, though both numbers are preliminary and subject to change.

In Island Health, there were 13 people who died and 40 hospital admissions.

In the same week, 1,987 people tested positive with a PCR test, which is a decrease from the previous week when 2,283 people tested positive...

COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. are once again on the decline, according to the latest weekly update from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

The data, released May 19, shows the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 dropped to 540 across the province, down nine per cent or 56 patients from the previous week. Of those, patients in critical care have also fallen to 49 from 54 last week.

Last week's hospitalizations marked a high point not seen since Feb. 25, when the Omicron variant pushed 599 people into acute care.

The drop in cases, hospitalizations and even wastewater data indicate the second Omicron wave — one dominated by the Omicron BA.2 sub-variant — is on the decline, reported the independent B.C. COVID-19 Modelling Group.

“The BA.2 wave appears to have peaked or is near its peak in B.C. and across Canada,” wrote the group May 18.

Evidence of that decline can be seen in all provinces across the country as COVID-19 seven-day moving averages decline from coast to coast (Canada’s three territories have seen slight upticks in their case count).

The number of new deaths due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus tend to lag behind hospitalizations. In B.C., they also now follow a delayed reporting period. The most up-to-date data shows 59 people died in the week ending May 14, a slight uptick from the first week of May.

All deaths are counted if the person tested positive for the virus in the past 30 days, and then died — a calculation that would include car accidents.

The discrepancy will be corrected with B.C.’s Vital Statistics Agency at a later date, said provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry in April when the province shifted the way it counts COVID-19 deaths...

British Columbia health officials are reporting 42 new deaths linked to COVID-19 in their weekly update, while hospitalizations have fallen below 500 for the first time in weeks.

The number of COVID-19 patients in hospital was 473 on Thursday, according to the BC Centre of Disease Control’s public dashboard. That’s down from 540 people in hospital a week earlier. Of those patients, 42 were reported to be in critical care units.

Between May 15-21, 42 people were admitted to hospital with COVID. In the same period, 42 people died within 30 days of a COVID-19 test. There have been 370,559 COVID-19 cases and 3,002 deaths reported since the pandemic began.

The Ministry of Health says that the weekly number of deaths and hospital admissions are only preliminary, and subject to change...
