Avian influenza: the situation in France

Health situation
For the current season, which began in early August 2026, France currently has no outbreaks of HPAI.For the previous season (August 2025 to the end of July 2026), France faced a total of 156 HPAI outbreaks:
- 125 outbreaks have been identified in commercial farms (Pas-de-Calais, Loire-Atlantique, Lot-et-Garonne, Vendée, Cher, Haute-Marne, Allier, Côte-d'Or, Marne, Dordogne, Maine-et-Loire, Loire, Deux-Sèvres, Haute-Vienne, Ain, Yvelines, Somme, Finistère, Loir-et-Cher, Calvados, Landes, Côtes-d'Armor, Nord, Drôme, Eure, Tarn-et-Garonne, Haute-Garonne);
- 31 homes in backyard poultry and non-commercial captive birds (Seine-Maritime, Vendée, Charente-Maritime, Loire-Atlantique, Loir-et-Cher, Bas-Rhin, Aube, Gironde, Ain, Indre-et-Loire, Drôme, Calvados, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Lot-et-Garonne, Essonne, Cher, Haute-Vienne, Ille-et-Vilaine, Creuse, Nord, Sarthe, Mayenne, Haute-Garonne).
Current risk level for HPAI: negligible
Since June 3, 2026, the HPAI risk level has been lowered to a negligible level in France.This implies the implementation of the measures described in Part II of the decree of September 25, 2023 .

Management measures in case of outbreaks
When an outbreak is detected, public health measures are deployed to limit the spread of the virus:- In infected establishments:
- Depopulation of homes;
- If necessary, preventive killing of animals within a perimeter defined by prefectural decree;
- Cleaning and disinfection of sites.
- In establishments near infected establishments: establishment of regulated zones (protection and surveillance zones) with reinforced measures:
- Increased surveillance;
- Enhanced biosecurity (protection from birds);
- Prohibition of poultry movements;
- Restriction of hunting activities for game birds.
Restricted areas and access to the PIGMA platform
