Argentina Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

Re: Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

Re: Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

I've already said this in another post, repeating it here because I live in a developing country and things are really different in here... specially health issues (it's a bit long, sorry):

I think we will see much more deaths in South American and other developing countries than we have seen until now in North America and Europe. I don't think the death rate of the virus itself has changed (unless any mutation occurs), I think that the death rate for any disease is always higher in a developing or poor country. Hospitals and health care are usually a issue for these countries, specially to poor population without insurance plans... they might have to wait for days for treatment and this can be really mortal if they are not able to get medicines in time... if they are far for big cities is even worse (48hs... and tamiflu... that is really hard to get, tamiflu is a very expensive medicine for South Americans in general, I wouldn't be able to afford it, and I'm not exactly poor, I would have to rely on public health if I need some - it's not unusual to read in the news about someone who died in hospital lines even in non pandemic times)... underlying conditions (sub-nutrition and others diseases) are also another factor. Argentina is facing a economic crises for sometime now... low levels of education is also another factor in most of these countries... many people are not able to understand what's going on because they don't have a clue how a virus works... some part of the population are not able to read or understand what they read... popular beliefs might create wrong ways of preventing the flu... some think that they get flu because they were exposed to cold weather, so they might close windows and doors and not change the air... a massive and well designed information would be a good thing, specially on tv and radio. We are facing winter here, Argentina and Chile had really cold weather this month... this can be a factor to watch...

If you wanna to have a clear idea on what I mean, you can have a glance on what was the Dengue epidemic in Brazil this year (2008/2009 - specially in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador) the hospitals were overloaded with cases, and we had lots of deaths... dengue is far for being a unknown virus :(

Hope this help some to have some perspective about what's happening in Argentina. I feel sorry for them and worried on what we are going to face the next days and months.

As long as I know, Argentina gov. does not have Oseltamivir in stock, they focused on contention strategies, but did not prepared on stocking treatments...

Just in 07/17 they decide to change the strategy and buy more medicines... (source: http://www.estadao.com.br/noticias/...tegia-para-enfrentar-gripe-suina,388860,0.htm )

Re: Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

Re: Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

I agree with most of this. Argentina is experiencing a run up to the peak of infections cycle.

But were else do we know of that high numbers, 75, of H1N1 patients on ventilators? and according to the newsreport ALL 75 patients are from the Conurbano area.
Anyone knows how many people live in that Conurbano area?
No matter what, a HUGE number of people apparemtly get VERY sick from the
H1N1 virus in that limited area.

Re: Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

Re: Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

The bottom line, IMHO, is that the H1N1 virus is NOT "mild", as so many health authorities are claiming, because, in som areas, if not treated in time, with antiviral ect ect people now get VERY sick from H1N1.

Here in Denmark authorities STILL claim that H1N1 is not worse than normal sesonal flu, and that people in Denmark don´t have to worry, I have to disagree.

The epidemic of influenza A acquires a scale every day more alarming.
The Government discusses the health emergency decree in the metropolitan area next week, after the legislative elections, which would lead to drastic measures to contain the contagion, with the temporary closure of places of mass gathering, like schools, malls, cinemas and recitals.

This was confirmed in THE NATION last night senior officials, alarmed by the relentless growth in the number of infected and dead.
Health authorities believe even that the fatal cases are already more than officially reported (so far, 21, with four new ones joined yesterday).

The possibility of an emergency order is being considered by the Ministry of Health of the Nation, which yesterday had reports of 15 other deaths in the last few hours after the virus A (H1N1).
And more waiting on reports from hospitals of Buenos Aires fatalities.

"It's a possibility that will be analyzed," said Health Minister Graciela Ocana, to be consulted on the possible issuance of the health emergency.

Faced with the worsening of the situation, the health system is increasingly strained, it is seeking ways to strengthen it, including the use of military hospital in Campo de Mayo, the installation of the medical field and in Buenos Aires mobile primary care close to railway stations and Eleven Constitution.

Doctors working in direct care of children and adults with respiratory warned yesterday about the alarming situation and the risk that the epidemic affects more virulence to sectors with fewer resources.

Daniel Pryluka of the Argentine Society of Infectious Diseases, told lanacion.com: "The results announced Malbrán late and, besides, a week ago in the capital and the suburbs were left to make a diagnosis massive. The spread of the virus and poverty conditions influence mortality. "

The crisis committee did not meet this week to avoid making a binding decision to postpone the elections emergency.

With the information officer fatalities, the 21 Argentines who died from influenza A equals the number of Canadians killed by the virus.
In the world only surpassed by the 115 people killed in Mexico and 87 in the United States.

Among the confirmed fatalities yesterday is that of a man of 35 years, in Mission, which became the first victim outside the Capital and the Buenos Aires metropolitan area.

Were reported also 97 positive cases, the payroll officer is infected 1391 people.
Many of them overcame the disease, but the actual number of infections is unknown, even to the authorities.

The number of deaths exceeded the forecasts of specialists, yet have no certainty about the cause of the increase in the number of deaths.
That beyond the actual rate of mortality can not be reliably established and are not analyzed because all suspected cases in the metropolitan region, but only to the patients.
In Buenos Aires yesterday reported 75 people hospitalized with breathing.

The Ministry of Health decided yesterday that the district most severely ill patients of influenza A are placed in the municipal hospital for trauma and emergency federal Abete, Municipality of Malvinas Argentinas.
This health center was chosen because it was careful to provide itself in advance of a large amount of ventilation equipment.
The remaining patients were evacuated yesterday to other clinics municipal health system, to provide 120 beds exclusively for patients with influenza A.

Health Minister bonaerense, Claudio Zin, said yesterday that the absenteeism in hospitals accounted for 40 percent of the staff also affected by various diseases.
Faced with this situation and to the significant increase of visits was determined to convene a retired health professionals and students in recent years of a career in medicine for their primary control of the consultations.

Factores de preocupación
Factors of concern

The expansion of influenza A in the suburbs is a major concern.
Pryluka Daniel, a member of the Argentine Society of Infectious Diseases, told La Nacion that "the spread of the virus and the poverty of much of the suburban influence mortality."

"The mortality rate should be calculated on the total cases, which is much higher than that reported by health authorities," the president of the Infectious Diseases Society of Argentina, Pablo Bonvehi.

From 1 July descentralizarían analysis is being conducted in Malbrán and would be operational by 19 laboratories in different provinces to get faster data.
For now, the actual infection numbers are speculation.

"Today there are 1391 people infected, but it is suspected that many more cases. To get a better idea of the number of patients should be multiplied by ten. This mortality rate is much lower," he told La Nacion Yabkowski Jorge, president of the Federation of Health Professionals in Argentina.

Yabkowski asked to declare a health emergency and demanded social and transparent monitoring of funds sent by the Government and for strengthening the health system, with a total of more than 300 million pesos.
A decree of public health emergencies that can legally be settled by a decision of the Ministry of Health allows the use of discretionary items and direct purchases of inputs.

During the recent dengue epidemic, the Ministry of Health promoted the health emergency declaration for it and got the backing of Congress, but at the time of the vote in the Senate bill was vetoed by the bloc, which minutes earlier had prompted vehemently opposed this measure.

Anyone knows how many people live in that Conurbano area?
No matter what, a HUGE number of people apparemtly get VERY sick from the
H1N1 virus in that limited area.

The Conurbano area is an area of suburbs & also huge slums.

"According to varying estimates from city agencies, 300,000 to 500,000 in this city of 3 million live in the slums."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/28/AR2007042801178.html

A recent bbc story:
"The population in the so-called "emergency villages" of the Argentine capital has grown by 25% in the last two years, now housing some 200,000 people.

That is equivalent to almost 7% of the inhabitants of the city, or the arrival of 11 families per day to the 14 slums and at least 40 settlements within Buenos Aires's perimeter.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8103595.stm

Lack of running water, no sanitary sewage, poor nutrition, substance abuse, & no preventative health care are all issues in these areas.

Re: Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

Data from 2004 at
http://www.esri.com/news/arcnews/spring04articles/in-the-province.html

The population of Argentina is roughly 36 million, with the Province of Buenos Aires containing approximately 40 percent of the country's total population (almost 14 million inhabitants in 307,571 square kilometers). Surrounding Buenos Aires, the population density can be as high as 10,000 people per square kilometer whereas areas further out in the province can have less than one person per square kilometer.

The Conurbano is the name given to the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. This area includes approximately 30 counties, with 9.5 million inhabitants within a mere 5,600 square kilometers.

Re: Health Emergency? 15 more deaths in last few hrs?

There is a lag in getting confirmations....I dont believe they have enough labs to run the tests. Furthermore, given that rapid tests (assuming they have them) have a high false negative rate, some deaths will be undercounted (unless they test everyone who has died of a respiratory illness).

But, it appears that the additional 15 deaths that are being discussed are not included in the 21 deaths confirmed as of this morning. Is that correct?
