Hong Kong: A fatal human swine influenza case at United Christian Hospital (1/3/10)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of United Christian Hospital (UCH) made the following announcement today (January 3) regarding a fatal case of human swine influenza (HSI):

A 49-year-old male patient with history of complicated diabetes mellitus and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome attended the Accident and Emergency Department of UCH on December 22 with fever, flu-like symptoms.

The patient was admitted to the isolation ward requiring ventilation support. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. The patient's condition became critical and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on December 23. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on December 24 and he finally succumbed at 6.07pm yesterday (January 2).

The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hospital Authority today (January 5) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of human swine influenza (HSI):

A 68-year-old man with TB Meningitis and pneumonia was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital via the Accident and Emergency Department on September 1, 2009 due to flu symptoms.

Positive result of HSI was confirmed on September 4, 2009 and the patient was prescribed with Tamiflu. He was transferred to Shatin Hospital on October 1, 2009 for rehabilitation.

He was subsequently transferred several times from Shatin Hospital to Prince of Wales Hospital due to his underlying chronic illness.

On January 1, 2010, the patient passed away in Shatin Hospital due to deterioration of his clinical condition.

The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

On the other hand, a 51-year-old male patient with history of diabetes mellitus and lung disease was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital via Accident & Emergency Department on December 30, 2009 because of flu symptoms.

Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on the same day (December 30, 2009) and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated on January 4, 2010 at night and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

The Hospital Authority today (January 6) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of human swine influenza (HSI):

A 85-year-old woman who had been bed-ridden and on tube feeding attended the Accident and Emergency Department at Pok Oi Hospital on December 22, 2009 due to fever and acute dyspnoea.

Positive result for HSI was confirmed the same day.

She was then transferred to the isolation ward of Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.

The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and she required ventilation support. She succumbed at around 3am today (January 6). The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

A 69-year-old male patient with good past health attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Princess Margaret Hospital on January 4 due to shortness of breath. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and tested positive for human swine influenza on January 5. The patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He is in critical condition and requires ventilatory support.

The hospital is closely monitoring his condition.

The spokesperson of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) today (January 7) made the following announcement regarding a newly confirmed critical case of human swine influenza:

A 43-year-old female patient with adjustment disorder attended the Accident & Emergency Department of PMH on January 6 due to fever and shortness of breath. She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and her test for human swine influenza was confirmed positive on the same day. The patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. She is now in critical condition and requires ventilatory support.

The hospital is closely monitoring her condition.

At least 8,872 doses of human swine influenza (HSI) vaccine were administered at Hospital Authority (HA), Department of Health (DH) and private clinics to target groups during the 24 hours ending at 1pm today (January 7). Of this number, 7,155 were administered at HA and DH clinics while the eHealth System received 1,717 vaccination reimbursement claims from private doctors. It is expected that some additional vaccinations already given by private doctors will be recorded in the eHealth System later. The administered doses comprised 4,805 jabs for community-living elderly aged 65 or above; 2,280 for persons under 65 years with chronic illnesses; 67 for pregnant women; 705 for healthcare workers; 986 for children aged between six months and less than six years; and 29 for pig farmers and slaughterhouse workers. This brings to at least 113,564 the cumulative total of HSI jabs administered to target groups since the start of the vaccination programme on December 21, 2009. One report of a serious adverse event with a history of vaccination was received. The patient's clinical features are compatible with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The DH is investigating. The expert panel considered that it was not possible to differentiate with reasonable certainty whether the relationship between the HSI vaccination and the patient's symptoms was causal or coincidental.

Hong Kong: HA weekly statistics of Designated Flu Clinics and admitted human swine influenza patients (1/7/10)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) today (January 7) provided the following wrap up of the past week:

In the past week (December 31, 2009 - January 6, 2010), a total of 1,068 patients with flu-like symptoms attended the DFCs.

Among all confirmed human swine influenza patients, 89 are now staying in public hospitals for treatment, with 68 in stable condition, nine in serious and 12 in critical condition.

Furthermore, the newly confirmed cases in the past week included 30 staff members of public hospitals (four male and 26 female, comprising five doctors, 10 nurses, three allied health professionals, eight supporting staff and four administrative/clerical staff).

So far 1,258 HA staff members have been confirmed with human swine influenza.

Among them, 1,232 have recovered and returned to work.

The HA spokesman reminded members of the public that the eight DFCs run a half-day service from 9am to 1pm during weekends and public holidays, while full-day service (9am to 5pm) is maintained from Mondays to Fridays.

The Hospital Authority spokesperson today (January 8) announced two new critical cases of human swine influenza (HSI):

A 67-year-old male patient with a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure developed fever with cough on January 5 and was admitted to the medical ward of Tuen Mun Hospital through Accident & Emergency Department on January 7.

Positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day.

Since the condition of the patient has deteriorated, he was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.

He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.

The patient is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

Another case is a 62-year-old female patient with chronic heart diseases who developed fever and shortness of breath on January 2.

She attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital on January 6 and was admitted to the isolation ward and prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.

She was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment on the same day.

Positive result of HSI was confirmed on January 7.

She is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support. The hospitals will continue to closely monitor the condition of the two patients.

All the cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

On the other hand, a 41-year-old male patient with good past health history has developed fever and cough since January 1. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on January 8 and was then admitted to Intensive Care Unit for treatment. His test result for HSI was confirmed positive on January 9. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

A 45-year-old male patient with good past health developed flu symptoms on January 6 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital on January 9.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Positive result for HSI was confirmed yesterday (January 10) and the patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.

He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

In addition, a 52-year-old female patient with a history of diabetes mellitus was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital via the Accident & Emergency Department on January 9 because of flu symptoms.

The patient tested positive for human swine influenza on the same day and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.

Her condition deteriorated yesterday.

She was transferred to the intensive care unit for further treatment and required ventilation support.

The hospitals are closely monitoring their conditions.

Hong Kong: Two more Norwegian-like mutations of human swine influenza virus detected (1/12/10)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health had made two more detections of a human swine influenza (HSI) virus strain with mutation similar to the one reported by Norway last year.

The two new cases involved two women, 53 and 59 years old respectively.

The 53-year-old woman developed fever and cough on December 2.

She is currently hospitalised in the North District Hospital in stable condition.

The 59-year-old woman presented with flu symptoms since December 12 and passed away on December 19 in Kwong Wah Hospital.

The detections arose from an ongoing surveillance programme of virus isolates by the Centre's Public Health Laboratory Service Branch.

They brought to nine the total number of such detections so far in Hong Kong.

A CHP spokesman said, "The nine detections arose from 408 virus isolates so far tested."

The specimen of one of the cases announced earlier on November 23, involving a 13-month-old child, was later confirmed to be negative for the mutation upon further tests.

The child had already recovered.

According the World Health Organization, this mutation has been detected in virus isolates from around 20 countries or areas and currently does not appear to pose a major public health issue.

"The CHP is closely monitoring influenza viruses worldwide and remains vigilant against changes in the virus that may have public health significance," he said.

"These viruses are still sensitive to antiviral drugs, oseltamivir and zanamivir."

"The CHP will continue to monitor influenza viruses in Hong Kong through its laboratory surveillance programme and alert the public of any unusual signs," he said.

His test result for HSI was confirmed positive today. His condition deteriorated subsequently and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

A 76-year-old male patient with Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease (COAD) attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Pok Oi Hospital yesterday (January 13) for flu symptoms and was admitted for treatment.

Positive result for HSI was confirmed on the same day and the patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.

His condition deteriorated subsequently and he was transferred to the High Dependency Unit for further treatment.

He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

In addition, a 74-year-old male patient with a history of ischaemic heart disease, hypertension and an old cerebral vascular accident attended the Department of Accident and Emergency of Yan Chai Hospital yesterday for shortness of breath, chest pain and cough and was admitted for treatment.

His condition deteriorated and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on the same day.

Positive result for HSI was confirmed today.

He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.

The patient is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

One report of a serious adverse event with a history of vaccination has been received so far. The patient's clinical features are compatible with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Investigation by the DH is underway. An expert panel considered that it was not possible to differentiate with reasonable certainty whether the relationship between the HSI vaccination and the patient's symptoms was causal or coincidental.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement regarding two new critical cases of human swine influenza (HSI) today (January 16):

A 53-year-old female patient with good past health was admitted to the Medical ward of TMH via the Accident and Emergency Department of TMH on January 15 due to fever and flu symptoms. Her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on the same day (January 15) for treatment and further observation. The test result for human swine influenza was confirmed positive on January 15. She was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. She is in critical condition and requires ventilation support. The hospital is closely monitoring her condition.

A 77-year-old male patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease attended the Accident and Emergency Department of TMH on January 15 due to fever and dyspnea. Positive result of HSI was confirmed today (January 16). His condition deteriorated to critical on the same day and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He is in critical condition and requires ventilation support. The hospital is closely monitoring his condition.

The Hospital Authority today (January 17) announced two fatal cases of human swine influenza (HSI):

A 77-year-old male patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Tuen Mun Hospital on 15 January due to fever and dyspnea. Positive result of HSI was confirmed yesterday (16 January). The patient's condition became critical and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics and required ventilation support. The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and succumbed at 11.25pm on the same day (16 January). The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

On the other hand, a 69-year-old male patient with good past health attended the Accident & Emergency Department of Princess Margaret Hospital on 4 January 2010 due to shortness of breath. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and the test result for human swine influenza was confirmed positive on 5 January 2010. The patient required ventilatory support and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. He succumbed yesterday (16 January) at 10.45pm. The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

Hong Kong: No evidence suggests linkage of fatal case with HSI vaccination (1/18/10)

In response to media enquiries concerning a 66-year-old woman with a history of human swine influenza (HSI) vaccination who passed away yesterday (January 17), a spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health said that as clarified with the hospital, there is so far no evidence to suggest that the death was related to the HSI vaccination.

The CHP's investigation revealed that the woman had underlying medical conditions requiring regular medication.

She had complained of chills and vomiting on January 16.

She was sent to the Accident and Emergency Department of Princess Margaret Hospital on January 17 and passed away on the same day.

The woman had received the HSI vaccination at a general out-patient clinic on December 24, 2009.

The body of the deceased has been transferred to Kwai Chung Mortuary pending further examination by forensic pathologists.

"So far, no evidence shows that the death was related to HSI vaccination," the spokesman said.
