On Monday, the Angolan Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, announced two new cases of covid-19 infection in the country, of which one was possible for community transmission and resulted in death, bringing the number to 50. total infected.
Speaking to Lusa, the WHO representative, Javier Aramburu, said that for community transmission to occur, it is necessary that several contagion cycles occur for some time (at least one month) and that they were not identified.
"We are still in time to contain the transmission. Angola, at the moment, is in a phase of local transmission with sporadic cases. To say that another scenario has already passed, it is necessary to do a detailed and very rigorous research", said the specialist.
At this moment it is what is being done by the Angolan Ministry of Health (MINSA), with support from WHO, this is the correct procedure, added the same official, estimating that preliminary results are still available today.
"It is necessary to wait for the results to define the most appropriate intervention measures", he stressed.
According to the Angolan health authorities, the most recent cases of infection are a 25-year-old woman, a nurse in one of the private sector treatment centers and an 82-year-old man with various pathologies, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, who died within hours after entering the health unit.
Franco Mufinda said that this man had returned from Portugal in February, at a time when there were no cases of covid-19 yet and "there is a lot of work around it" to investigate possible connections to other contacts.
Angola has so far recorded 50 confirmed cases of infection with the new coronavirus, of which three died, 17 recovered and 30 were active in a stable clinical situation.
Among these, 22 are for local transmission, with the case of the case announced on Monday still missing.
So far, 6,605 samples have been collected, of which 50 are positive, 6,508 are negative and 547 are being processed.
There are 442 suspicious cases investigated to date and more than a thousand contacts to be followed, 1214 people are in institutional quarantine.
Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 316,000 deaths and infected more than 4.7 million people in 196 countries and territories.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
In Africa, there are 2,834 confirmed deaths, with more than 88,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the pandemic in that continent.
