Six nursing students catch swine flu

HYDERABAD: The dreaded swine flu is not showing any signs of abating. Panic gripped the medical staff at the Gandhi General Hospital with six nursing students testing positive for the infection. Besides, a 32-year-old woman from Kurnool succumbed to the deadly influenza while being shifted to Hyderabad today.

Dr Ch Jayakumari, Hyderabad district health and medical officer, said 15 fresh cases were reported today while 39 suspected patients were screened in the twin cities. Of the 15, six are nursing students aged between 20 and 25, five are from Malakpet (two women and three men) and two each are from the Apollo and AP Chest Hospital.

A woman patient from Eruru village in Chippagiri mandal of Kurnool district died succumbed while shifting to the city. Doctors said she had been suffering from high fever for 10 days and got admitted to a hospital in Kurnool two days ago. She was referred to the AP Chest Hospital for tests as her health began deteriorating fast.

Since January, 22 people died of swine flu and 217 tested positive for the infection.

Health officials said since the virus had become endemic, preventive measures had to be taken on a warfooting.

Health minister D Nagendar expressed concern that several patients were coming for treatment at an advanced stage, mostly after developing secondary infections. Speaking to reporters here today, the minister urged the patients to take only prescribed medicines.

Nagendar informed that 16 teaching hospitals, 20 Vaidya Vidhana Parishad hospitals, five area hospitals and 44 private hospitals have been recognised for providing treatment for swine flu. They have been equipped with ventilators, isolated wards and medicines and experienced doctors.

Since January, 2,489 patients had been screened and 217 found positive. On Thursday, 62 persons were screened and 21 were found positive, he informed. Most of the cases were being reported from Hyderabad and Vizag. Those with 'compromised immunity' like pregnancy, lactation stage and diabetic patients should take extra care if they contracted flu. Last year, swine flu cases came from foreign countries. But this year the virus had become endemic, health secretary PV Ramesh said. Many diarrhoea cases too were being reported, he said and added that the panchayat raj and municipal administration departments had been requested to take preventive measures.

?The superintendent didn?t provide swine flu vaccine to the staff working in the swine flu isolation ward even though the government sanctioned sufficient doses,? One more dies of swine flu

Express News ServiceFirst Published : 09 Aug 2010 03:46:46 AM ISTLast Updated : 09 Aug 2010 10:36:39 AM IST

HYDERABAD: One more death due to swine flu was reported on Sunday taking the toll to 25 since its outbreak this monsoon.

S V Prasad, superintendent of AP government chest hospital, told Express that a 50-year-old man, native of Hanamkonda in Warangal district, was admitted to the hospital yesterday suspecting to have contracted swine flu. He died this morning.

Even as no fresh cases of swine flu were reported, over 10 people were admitted to the hospital with common flu symptoms today.

He said the deceased was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition and died undergoing treatment within less 24 hours of admission.

?Most of the people do not care to go for treatment on having symptoms of fever, cold and cough. But when the situation becomes critical, they rush to the hospital and very little can be done then as the effect of infection will be in an advanced state,?? he said.

?The virus has been mild so far, but it can become dangerous.

Surveillance and screening has to be given priority and special medical staff as well as testing centres have also been made available at various parts in the twin cities.

The cool weather can lead to a rise in infections in the coming days,?? he said. But people need not panic about the disease, he added

Chest Hospital authorities said that the 45-year-old woman was suffering from tuberculosis and was admitted to the hospital on July 27. She was on ventilator support for the last nine days. Doctors said her TB worsened her condition and she died due to acute respiratory distress on Monday afternoon.

Fear of H1N1 grips Gandhi Hospital

A warning shout rings out to one Mahesh, who was entering the emergency block of Gandhi Hospital, ?Do not go inside without wearing a mask.? Fear abounds every corner after three doctors contracted swine flu. Panic is widespread in the hospital premises, as people are gripped by the fear of H1N1 influenza.

The moment one enters the Gandhi Hospital, one is greeted by the sight of security men, patients and their attendants, doctors and everybody else wearing masks or handkerchiefs. None of the attendants of swine flu patients are allowed to spend time near their wards.

?We have been told to wear masks as we are constantly exposed to the hospital environment. With news spreading that the flu had been contracted by a few hospital doctors, it is giving us sleepless nights,? said a security guard. All hospital officials are tight-lipped about the status of patients being treated. When Express tried to contact the superintendent Dr Ashok Kumar in his chambers, he declined to speak. ?The superintendent has given us instructions not to allow any mediapersons who want to talk about swine flu,? said the superintendent?s assistant.

The three doctors undergoing treatment include two house surgeons and one assistant professor. They are being treated in isolated wards, where patients who are critical are treated. Interestingly, despite all three of them taking the preventive swine flu vaccine several days ago, they still contracted the virus. Meanwhile, seven nursing students who had contracted swine flu are said to be recovering.

It should be recalled that 175 nursing students who had been agitating for them to be given the swine flu vaccine were administered the vaccine.

H1N1cases: Only 11 ventilators for swine flu patients in Government hospitals?

Hyderabad, 11th Aug: It is hard to believe but is true. There are just 11 active ventilators at the government hospitals to support the ever increasing number of swine flu patients in the capital city of Andhra Pradesh.

This is not all. Tertiary government hospitals dedicated exclusively for mother and child health neither have neither swine flu isolation wards nor provide ventilator support!

?We just refer pregnant women with flu like symptoms to Gandhi, Chest or King Kothi area hospitals,? is the typical reply from authorities at Niloufer, and Sultan Bazar hospitals. Even in district area hospitals at King Kothi, Nampally, Madhapur and Vanasthalipuram, barring isolation beds, there are no ventilators.

At present, Gandhi Hospital has six ventilators, at Chest Hospital there are four but only three are working and at Osmania General Hospital there are two ventilators. With very few ventilators available in districts, large numbers of patients needing critical care are left with no option but to visit tertiary hospitals in the capital.

There have been instances when patients were denied admissions at Chest, Gandhi and Osmania General Hospital and were referred to private hospitals. ?We are lucky that at this moment H1N1 is not virulent and we are able to treat patients if they come at the right time. But sometimes we are forced to refer patients to private hospitals because our ventilators are occupied,? a Gandhi Hospital doctor points out.

Sufficient manpower including doctors, nurses and paramedics are required for round-the-clock maintenance of ventilators. Ideally, one ventilator requires one doctor, nurse and at least three paramedical staff capable of working in shifts.

?We have requested the government to provide us with financial aid and enough manpower. We can only support three ventilators at this moment because of shortage of nurses, paramedics and doctors,? Chest Hospital authorities point out.

H1N1 in post-pandemic phase!: Swine flu on the decline in Hyderabad city

Hyderabad,26th Aug: The number of swine flu cases is showing signs of decline in the State capital prompting authorities to maintain that the H1N1 has entered its post-pandemic phase. The district health authorities informed that already cases of H1N1 in the twin cities have started to taper-off after the peak of July and mid-August.

In the first, second and third weeks of August 56, 53 and 49 persons respectively tested positive for swine flu. However, in the last week of August the number came down to 15 and on Wednesday, of the 81samples tested at Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM), only six came out positive.

?The figures indicate a decline and we think we have reached a post-pandemic stage. Despite the decline, our teams will continue to hold local health camps and awareness drives on seasonal flu in days to come,? said District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), Dr. Ch. Jaya Kumari.

With monsoons remaining active, authorities have requested public to continue taking precautions like personal hygiene, vaccination, cough etiquette and visiting H1N1 nodal centres in case of high grade fever for over 48 hours. ?Children, pregnant women and persons with diabetes, heart ailments and other complications continue to remain in the high risk groups. They should get themselves vaccinated,? Dr. Jayakumari said.
