Health authorities maintained that the deceased were brought to the Gandhi Hospital at an advanced stage and despite the best efforts and medicines, doctors could not save the lives of the two women.

Swine flu checks mandatory for pregnant women

HYDERABAD: Of the 10 swine flu deaths in the state, an alarming six deaths have been of either pregnant women or those who have just delivered. And with three women succumbing to HINI in the last four days alone (all of whom were pregnant or had just delivered), the state health authorities are now all set to sensitise gynaecologists in the city.

The technical committee set up by the state government to help tackle swine flu effectively met on Wednesday along with superintendents of government hospitals where anti-natal facilities are provided. It was decided that from now on, as part of the anti-natal checkups, gynaecologists will also check for swine-flu like symptoms among pregnant women and make enquiries whether any of their family members have any such symptoms.

Besides, if there are symptoms, samples will be collected and sent to swine flu notified centres to avoid any delay. The health department is also planning to have a meeting with the members of Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India to sensitise gynaecologists from the private sector on the issue.

"Of the 10 deaths since June 1, six are those of women who were either pregnant (4) or had just delivered (2). All these cases came in a bad shape and expired because they got themselves admitted when their condition had deteriorated. In pregnancy, women are six times more prone to the infection. They develop complications because of their low immunity levels," said Dr K Subhakar, member of the technical committee.

Specialists said that many women assume that any form of medication is harmful during pregnancy and try avoiding them. However, doctors maintained that if the pregnant woman is worried about taking Oseltamivir in the first trimester, Relenza is an alternate that they can go for. "People who started the treatment within 48 hours of acquiring the infection have not developed any complications," specialists said.

Experts also maintained that people with flu-like symptoms should avoid visiting a mother and her new born as her immunity levels are still low post delivery. As far as vaccinating pregnant women is concerned, which the state government was contemplating as part of the vaccination drive in the second phase, authorities said that the decision has to come from the Government of India.

First swine flu case in Warangal

WARANGAL: The first swine flu case in the district was recorded on Saturday with the admission of one Gattu Venu, 37, in the swine flu ward of MGM Hospital in Warangal.

According to reports, Venu was suffering from high fever and throat pain for the last one week and was taking treatment from a local RMP at his native Peddapuram village of Athmakur mandal. But with the condition deteriorating, his family members rushed him to a private nursing home in Warangal town, where the medical experts suggested shifting Venu to MGM Hospital.

He was admitted in the swine flu ward of MGM on Tuesday after doctors suspected him to be suffering with swine flu. Venu's blood samples were sent to the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) at Hyderabad. "We got the patient's reports on Saturday and he has tested positive for swine flu," said Dr E Ashok Kumar, superintendent of the hospital.

"The patient's condition is stable and he is out of danger," he added. The doctors also examined Venu's parents and sent their samples to the IPM centre at Hyderabad to find out whether they too were infected.

With swine flu cases increasing in the state capital, precautionary measures were being implemented at the 1,000-bedded MGM Government Hospital by way of vaccination of the duty doctors, nurses and paramedical staff. According to the superintendent, the government has sent 500 doses of the anti-swine flu vaccine to the hospital meant for the duty doctors and staff at casualty and emergency wards, as they would be treating the swine flu victims.

Swine flu scare spreads in Chittoor
TNN, Jul 30, 2010, 01.33am IST

TIRUPATI: Chittoor district is in the grip of swine flu scare. No less than seven persons have tested positive for the H1N1 virus in the last two days alone, forcing medical and health authorities to take measures on a war-footing.

A couple of days ago, wife of an RMP doctor, hailing from Madanapalle tested positive for swine flu and was rushed to Bangalore for treatment. Five others -- three from Tirupati and two from Madanapalle -- have also tested positive for swine flu.

District collector V Seshadri, who held an emergency meeting with the officials, directed them to set up isolation wards in Tirupati, Srikalahasti, Renigunta, Chittoor and Madanapalle immediately. Sources said since the tail-end district receives thousands of pilgrims from all parts of the country, the chances of spread of the H1N1 virus are more.

District medical and health officer (DM&HO) Y Lalitha Kumari said 15,000 swine flu medicines and 2,000 vaccines have been distributed in problem-prone areas. "Since Chittoor shares borders with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, we are focusing on border areas as the virus could spread easily," she said.

It may be recalled a pregnant woman Kasmeen, 24, from Pileru died of swine flu while undergoing treatment in Vellore CMC Hospital on July 23.

Meanwhile, worried over the prospects of the dreadful disease spelling serious trouble for thousands of pilgrims atop the hill shrine, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is mulling to provide swine flu masks to the devotees thronging the famed temple.

Ten fresh swine flu cases in State

HYDERABAD: Ten people, eight of them women, tested positive for swine flu in the state today, taking the number of confirmed cases of the contagious disease to 187 this year.

Dr K Subhakar, State nodal officer for swine flu at the Chest Hospital here, told Express that five cases were reported from the twin cities, two from Tirupati and one each from Visakhapatnam and Mahboobnagar. All the patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals and a few of them are in a critical condition.

"All of them were admitted in hospitals two days ago with high fever, cold and cough. They tested positive today," Subhakar said.

He said swine flu is rapidly spreading in the twin cities and its suburban localities. "We are taking serious note of the recent swine flu deaths. Precautionary measures are being taken and people are being informed about the measures to check the spread of the disease," he added. With swine flu cases on the rise in Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka, heath authorities here have enough reasons to fear that the infection could spread in the State. Already, swine flu cases from districts bordering Maharashtra and Karnataka are being shifted to Hyderabad.

"Surveillance and screening has to be given high priority. Special medical staff as well as testing centres have been made available at various parts of the twin cities. Adequate stocks of swine flu vaccine are being maintained in all district health centres and nodal centres," he said.

Swine flu virus can spread rapidly during monsoon and winter months. Therefore, we could see more infections in the coming days. However, there is no need for panic. People need to be more vigilant and take precautionary measures," he said.

All the girls reportedly share the same room. Doctors said the girls had been kept in isolation wards and their nasal swabs sent for testing.

Meanwhile, four others, including a 23yearold woman from Tirupati and a threeyearold boy from Tipparti in Nalgonda district were hospitalised after they contracted the deadly virus.

While the woman from Tirupati who delivered a baby recently was shifted to the Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital at Vellore in Tamil Nadu, the threeyearold from Nalgonda is undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital. Doctors said two others from Nalgonda had also tested positive for swine flu. The spurt in swine flu cases is being attributed to the rainy season.
