COVID-19 in Alberta: 23 deaths Friday as hospitalizations remain high
CTV News Edmonton

Published Feb. 11, 2022 8:47 a.m. EST

The number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Alberta grew by 23 on Friday, while the province also retroactively set a new pandemic record of infected patients in hospital.

The deaths bring the total number of COVID-19 deaths up to 3,741 and were of individuals ranging in age from in their 40s to more than 80 years old.

The deaths reported Friday occurred over several days. Eighty-one Albertans have died due to COVID-19 over the past week.

The latest initial count of patients with COVID-19 in hospital sits at 1,566, the 14th highest to date, but also likely to rise in the coming days due to data revisions.

Tuesday’s count, initially reported as 1,623, was revised to a new record high 1,674. And, Thursday’s count of 1,586 was revised up to 1,627, the seventh highest to date.

Hospitalization data is routinely revised for accuracy and to account for reporting delays.

The 25 highest patient counts have all come in the last 25 days.

Friday’s patient count includes 127 patients in intensive care units, an increase of four over the last seven days.

There are now more than 24,000 known active cases in Alberta after 1,400 new cases were confirmed Friday. Limits to testing capacity and eligibility mean the actual number of cases is many times higher...

...The latest:

Stage 1 of Alberta's staged loosening of public health restrictions advanced another notch on Feb. 14:
As of Monday, there are no masking requirements for children and youth 12 years old and younger and no masking requirements for children and youth in schools for any age.
Stage 1 took effect Tuesday night at 11:59 p.m. and removed the restrictions exemption program, removed restrictions on food and beverage at entertainment venues, and removed capacity limits for all venues, except those that have a large capacity.
Stage 2 will take effect March 1 at 12 a.m., and will remove indoor masking, remaining school requirements, youth screening for entertainment and sports, removal of capacity limits on all large venues and entertainment venues, limits on indoor and outdoor gatherings lifted and mandatory work from home lifted. This stage is contingent on hospitalizations trending downward.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says the province is working toward a third stage, which does not have a date, where people would no longer be required to isolate if they have COVID-19, and COVID operational and outbreak protocols will be lifted in continuing care facilities.
Health Minister Jason Copping said the stages are all conditions-based approach, based on hospitalization trends.
First vaccine doses have now passed 90 per cent for Albertans ages 12 and older, meaning nearly 3.4 million Albertans 12 and over are now vaccinated with at least one dose.
At a news conference on Feb. 10, Health Minister Jason Copping said new hospital admissions for COVID-positive patients peaked more than two weeks ago and the number of active cases in the province is dropping. "Provincially, they're down by nearly a quarter," he said.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health, announced that fully immunized staff in continuing care can once again work at more than one facility starting Feb. 16.
Copping said another 2.5 million rapid tests were sent to AHS sites and pharmacies last week, with another two million tests shipped this week. A total of 1,453 pharmacies have signed up to distribute rapid tests. AHS sites will stop distributing rapid tests once the current supply runs out.
Copping said vaccine eligibility will be expanded for those between the ages of 12 and 17 who have additional risk factors. They will be eligible for a booster dose on Feb. 15.
The City of Calgary said the announcement from the province to remove COVID-19 public health restrictions — specifically the Restrictions Exemption Program — in three phases will result in the end of the city's vaccine passport bylaw.
However, the city says its face-covering bylaw will not be affected by this change, and a face covering or mask will still be required for everyone over two years of age in indoor public spaces and public vehicles.

Recent numbers:

The province reported 35 more COVID deaths on Feb. 14. A total of 3,776 Albertans have died of COVID-19.
1,528 people are in hospital with COVID (38 fewer than Friday's figure) and 124 people are in ICU (three less than Friday's figure).
In the past seven days, 38.5 per cent of admissions were primarily for COVID, 22 per cent were considered COVID-contributing and about 38 per cent were admissions where a COVID infection was seen as incidental, according to AHS data.
There were 2,647 new cases of COVID-19 from Feb. 11 to 13 from 10,217 tests.
The positivity rate for lab confirmed cases is 25.9 per cent as of Feb 14.
Alberta has 20,865 active cases of COVID-19.
The true figure is likely 10 times that number given that high caseloads have overwhelmed the ability of the system to test outside high-priority groups, according to Hinshaw...

14 more deaths as Alberta moves from pandemic to endemic approach to COVID-19
'There is no one right way to respond to these changes,' Dr. Deena Hinshaw says
CBC News · Posted: Feb 15, 2022 1:30 PM MT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Alberta is now in a period of transition as it begins to shift from a pandemic response to COVID-19 to an endemic one, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, said Tuesday...

...Hinshaw said there are individuals who will continue to be at a high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19.

"Every person's experience through the pandemic has been unique, depending on the challenges they have faced," she said. "COVID risk to individuals and the population is not a binary on-off or yes-no state."

The virus will continue to affect the patient load in hospitals for the short term, and capacity is not yet back to a baseline state, Hinshaw said.

The province reported 14 more COVID-related deaths on Tuesday. Alberta's total deaths from COVID-19 have now reached 3,790.

As of Tuesday, there were 1,538 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 123 in intensive care.

More restrictions to be lifted

If the Omicron-driven fourth wave continues to recede, most of Alberta's public health restrictions will be gone by the end of the month.

Step 1 took effect last week. Alberta's vaccine passport system was cancelled...
