There are 1,469 people in hospital with COVID-19, an increase of 51 since Wednesday’s count of 1,418. This includes 106 in intensive care, a decrease of three since the previous day.

...Recent numbers:
  • There were 1,496 people with COVID in Alberta hospitals on Jan. 28, the highest seen so far during the pandemic.
  • There were 105 people with COVID in intensive care, compared with 111 on Jan. 18.
  • Of people admitted to hospital in the past week, 58.6 per cent of new non-ICU admissions and 66.1 per cent of new ICU admissions were directly related to COVID. The remainder of admissions were not related to the virus, or it was unclear.
  • As of Jan. 27, provincial ICU capacity (including additional surge beds) was at 82 per cent. Without the additional surge spaces, provincial ICU capacity would be at 114 per cent.
  • On Jan. 20, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said that about four per cent of people in hospital with COVID are under the age of 18. She said she hasn't seen any children who have had at least one dose of vaccine in hospital for COVID.
  • The province announced Jan. 20 it is expanding bed capacity for Omicron patients. Existing beds are being allocated for COVID-19 care, and additional beds are being opened in some locations as needed.
  • Alberta's positivity rate on Jan. 27 was around 34 per cent.
  • The province reported 13 more COVID deaths on Jan. 28. A total of 3,531 Albertans have died of COVID-19.
  • Case counts:
    • Hinshaw said the true figure is likely 10 times that number given that high caseloads have overwhelmed the ability of the system to test outside high-priority groups.
    • Alberta has 41,300 active cases of COVID-19.
    • 3,036 newcases were reported to Alberta Health out of 8,655 tests.

Alberta's premier said he expects to relax COVID-19 restrictions in February as the chief medical officer of health said hospitalizations are plateauing.

There are currently 35,322 known active cases in Alberta, down from more than 67,000 two weeks ago, what Premier Jason Kenney called the peak of the Omicron variant.

The actual number of cases in the province is believed to be higher due to limited availability to PCR tests and the province not counting rapid test results.

There are 1,585 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 109 people in the ICU. COVID-19 patients in the ICU make up more than half of the 195 total admissions as of Tuesday...

COVID-19 fifth wave peak likely reached in Alberta, shift to endemic still too early: Hinshaw
CTV News Edmonton

Published Feb. 3, 2022 10:36 a.m. EST

Alberta's top doctor said the province has likely reached the peak of cases from the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, but until hospitalizations significantly decline, a shift to an endemic response is still too early.

In an update on Thursday, Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported 2,370 new confirmed infections of COVID-19 after the province completed more than 7,300 tests. The province's positivity rate is approximately 34 per cent for lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19.

There are now 33,879 known active cases in Alberta. However, testing capacity and eligibility limits mean the actual number of new and active COVID-19 infections is much higher.

The number of patients in Alberta hospitals with COVID-19 has reached another new record high. Wednesday's patient count of 1,598 was revised on Thursday to a pandemic high of 1,648.

The latest hospitalization patient count has 1,584 COVID-19 patients in hospital, the third-highest count to date and likely to rise in the coming days pending more revisions.

Hospitalization data is regularly revised to account for accuracy and reporting delays.

The 1,584 includes 112 patients in intensive care units. That's an increase of two from this time a week ago, but the ICU count has held steady between 104 and 114 patients since Jan. 17.

Fifteen more deaths from the disease were reported Thursday, raising the pandemic total to 3,608. The deaths are spread across several days and were in individuals ranging in age from in their 40s to more than 80 years old.

The chief medical officer of health noted that Alberta Health's data indicated that the province has likely passed the peak of COVID-19 cases from the fifth wave...

Alberta reported 2,086 new infections of COVID-19 on Friday as the number of patients in hospital with the disease remained steady.

Those cases were identified after the province completed more than 6,200 tests. There are now 32,711 known active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta. However, testing capacity and eligibility limits mean the actual number of new and active COVID-19 infections is likely much higher.

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 remained at 1,584, what was reported on Thursday. That represents a slight decline from Wednesday's revised patient count of 1,648 — a new pandemic high.

The 1,584 includes 118 patients in intensive care units — an increase of six since Thursday. Alberta's ICU count has held steady between 104 and 114 patients since Jan. 17.

The Edmonton zone leads the province for patients in ICU with 49, while the Calgary zone has 45.

Twenty-six more deaths from the disease were reported Friday, raising the pandemic total to 3,634...

COVID-19 hospitalizations decrease slightly as Alberta’s vaccine passport program officially expires
By Caley Gibson Global News
Posted February 9, 2022 6:46 pm

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 decreased slightly on Wednesday as Alberta’s vaccine passport program officially expired.

Premier Jason Kenney announced Tuesday that the restrictions exemption program would be lifted at midnight. The REP came into effect in September, and required Albertans to show proof of double vaccination or a negative rapid test result to obtain entry to businesses operating under the program.

There were 1,615 Albertans in hospital with COVID on Wednesday, a drop from 1,623 people Tuesday. Of those, 135 are being treating in intensive care. That’s a slight increase from 129 COVID-19 patients in Alberta ICUs Tuesday.

Eleven additional deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the province’s death toll to 3,696.

Alberta reported 1,684 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 Wednesday from 5,748 tests. The positivity rate was 31.73 per cent.

The number of lab-confirmed active cases in Alberta now sits at 26,896, down from 28,265 lab-confirmed active cases Tuesday. Because of limited access to PCR testing, Alberta health officials have said the actual number of new and active cases in Alberta is much higher that what’s being publicly reported...

Alberta's health minister said the province is seeing the number of active cases and the number of people being admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment decrease.

On Thursday, the province reported 1,363 new confirmed infections of the disease after completing just under 5,000 tests. There are now 25,339 confirmed active cases, representing a decline by almost two-thirds from January's peak of 71,600 cases.

That gives Alberta a positivity rate of about 29.3 per cent, based only on PCR confirmed tests. Limits to testing capacity and eligibility mean the actual number of cases is likely many times higher.

Twenty-two more deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Thursday, raising the pandemic total to 3,718.

There are 1,586 people with COVID-19 in hospital, including 126 in intensive care units...
