Alaska earthquake 5.7 - near Anchorage

AlaskaDenise

In Memoriam
I just had a really big earthquake that shook my house, computer, books, planst and lasted quite awhile...

I'll start looking up info, but I HOPE it was local, because if it wa further away, this is a very bad quake.

nothing on the map yet in your area

Re: Big earthquake here NOW - ??? magnitude

Are you on twitter? If so follow USGS_Earthquake (and a couple of others I don't have at hand). I see nothing in AK recently except a 2.3 in King Cove, Alaska Peninsula, and a 1.5 in the Fox, AK area. The only decently sized earthquake I see is a 5.4 (or 5.1, depending on source) in Svalbard (between Norway and the Pole).

I see nothing else >= M3.0 anywhere in the world recently.

From @alaska_avo via Twitter:

A regional tectonic earthquake occurred at 11:28 AKDT and was felt throughout South Central Alaska. This event is not related to Redoubt. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 and a location 30 miles southwest of Talkeetna.

Re: Big earthquake here NOW - ??? magnitude

They made a nice map, real fast, see post # 6.

Re: Big earthquake here NOW - ??? magnitude

Southcentral - a little north of Anchorage and E of Mt. Redoubt (active volanco).

.

OK, see my post of a tweet from the AVO below in the thread.

Re: Big earthquake here NOW - ??? magnitude

Another source says 5.7 - no big deal - pheeew. I'm glad it was close, because that means there wasn't a larger quake further away. Our construction will withstand it just fine.
