A large crowd is expected in Wellington today to celebrate a "friendly, bubbly, quirky" woman who was killed four days after her 27th birthday.
Police yesterday confirmed that Rachel Elizabeth Conley, from the United States, had died in the Christchurch earthquake. She had been due to fly out of the city on the night of the quake.

She had spent the past year working as a part-time receptionist at Te Whaea: National Dance and Drama Centre in Newtown. Friends will gather there at 5.30pm today to celebrate her life.

Friend and colleague Priscilla Gough said she understood Ms Conley had been walking out of Southern Ink tattoo shop in Colombo St when the building facade and awning had come down on her.

He says Australian searchers will stay to help next week and the US crew has left equipment behind.

N.Zealand issues tsunami warning after Japan quake

AFP March 11, 2011, 8:29 pm http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/...and-issues-tsunami-warning-after-japan-quake/

WELLINGTON, March 11, 2011 (AFP) - - New Zealand civil defence officials issued a tsunami warning for the country on Friday and warned people to stay clear of beaches following a massive earthquake in Japan.
"A tsunami marine warning is in effect for New Zealand," New Zealand Civil Defence said in a bulletin, adding that no threat to land was expected when the tsunami arrives at around 6:23am (1723 GMT).
"Historical events and pre-calculated tsunami models indicate that the largest effects (less than one metre wave height at the coastline) is expected along the coasts of the central and northern North Island," it said.
The agency said a marine tsunami threat meant that "strong and unusual" currents were possible in the sea, river mouths and estuaries and that unusual waves may be sighted at beaches.
Residents of coastal areas were warned to stay off beaches and out of the water as the waves generated by the 8.9 quake in Japan approached.

Japan quake team heads home from NZ

Members of a Japanese earthquake response team working in the New Zealand city of Christchurch are preparing to return home to deal with the crisis in their own country.

New Zealand says it will send one of its own urban search and rescue teams to Japan, with six staff to leave on Saturday night and another 42 expected to follow later.

So far Japanese authorities have only requested assistance from the United States, Britain, New Zealand and Australia.

Japan sent 66 search and rescue workers to Christchurch after last month's earthquake, and New Zealand prime minister John Key says his country is honoured to return the favour.

"I think when the Japanese team came and worked alongside them in Christchurch, they saw first-hand just how good our people are," he said.

"I think it's a feather in their cap that despite the fact that we're dealing with a massive earthquake in Christchurch, the Japanese have turned to New Zealand and asked us for support.

"We obviously want to give that support to the people of Japan. They've been very kind and generous to us."

Christchurch to take population hit

"Following the February 22 earthquake, it is inevitable that some residents will decide to leave permanently," they said today in a market focus report.

"We estimate that Christchurch could possibly lose up to 4 percent of its population permanently in the first year, via emigration to elsewhere in the country or overseas, and a reduction in immigration, if overseas patterns are followed".

... The economists said there were reports that as many as 65,000 Christchurch residents - or 17 percent of the city population - had left the city following the February 22 earthquake.

Christchurch schools open as refugees return home

Christchurch is getting ready for the return of up to 60,000 residents who fled the city after the February 22 earthquake.

It is expected that 110 schools will reopen this morning, a major reason to anticipate the return of refugees.

By the end of the week 143 schools - 88 per cent of the city's total - will be open.

Ceremonial blessing of sites a time for grief and healing

15 March, 2011 - 14:34

Christchurch Police say a ceremonial blessing of sites where people died in the 22 February earthquake is another step in helping residents, communities and families of victims come to terms with the tragic loss of life.

Local kaumatua and a police chaplain have today [Tuesday 15 March] completed blessing ceremonies at more than 20 locations around the CBD and wider city.

Rev Jim Patrick, police chaplain, says the saying of prayers over the sites is an important step towards closure for many people affected by the earthquake.

"This is an acknowledgement of the intense spiritual impact of the tragedy on so many people - families of the deceased, emergency services workers, residents and the wider city," he says.

"The blessing helps us to accept what has happened, to grieve, to commend the deceased to God and to begin to move on."

Police kaumatua, Rev Maurice Gray, says the blessing included a lifting of the tapu on each site where people had died, along with the sprinkling of water and laying of pare kawakawa - branches which symbolise life being brought to the place of death.

"This is part of the ongoing recognition of the spiritual needs of all those families and communities affected by the tragedy.

"We are especially conscious that international families have entrusted the spiritual care of their loved ones to us. In these blessings we acknowledge the reality of our grief, but also bring the light of life to these places," he says.

Factors combined to intensify Chch quake - GNS

Published: 11:06AM Friday March 18, 2011 Source: ONE News

An unusual combination of at least four seismic effects caused last month's deadly magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch, scientists have found.

GNS Science said the intense shaking in Christchurch was caused by the high amount of energy released in the rupture of the fault, the direction that energy was released -towards the city, a recently discovered trampoline-like interaction between geological layers under the city, and the close proximity of the earthquake to the city.

The ground accelerations in Christchurch, the largest ever recorded for a New Zealand earthquake, were as much as four times higher than the highest accelerations measured in last Friday's magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the east coast of Japan, GNS Science says.

The largest ground accelerations in Christchurch during the February 22 quake were more than twice the acceleration due to gravity.

Seismologists have calculated that the energy released in Christchurch was equivalent to a magnitude 6.7 earthquake.

GNS Science Seismologist, Bill Fry, said it was the acceleration that caused the 'jolting' feeling people experienced during an earthquake.

"A Formula 1 racing car accelerates on average at less than twice the force due to gravity, and during the magnitude 9.0 'mega-quake' off Japan's east coast last Friday, peak ground acceleration was recorded at only about 0.53 the strength of gravity, or less than one quarter that recorded in Christchurch," Fry said.

Faults failed

The faults that failed in both the September magnitude 7.1 and February magnitude 6.3 Christchurch quakes were very strong, with high amounts of friction holding the two sides together, Fry said.

"When a 'strong' fault breaks, it releases more energy than an equal-sized 'weak' fault would. Think about the difference between breaking a 1cm-thick sheet of styrofoam and a 1cm-thick sheet of plywood, and the amount of jarring you would feel in your hands.

"The Canterbury crust is analogous to the plywood, but most earthquakes are more like breaking the styrofoam."

In addition, seismologists have discovered that the earthquake rupture was faster than most earthquakes of this magnitude.

"In fact, the rupture travelled at about the same speed as some of the waves that were generated by it," Fry said.

This implies that as the waves from the first second or so of the rupture were travelling toward Christchurch, new energy was being released during the next couple of seconds, and these were added together to make the shaking particularly 'punchy'.

This resulted in something compared to the supersonic boom of a jet aircraft, he said.

While the service was filled with much sadness it finished with an uplifting video montage of the rescue efforts in the minutes, hours and days following the quake.

I also like the first part about there being "trampoline-like" energy under Christchurch.

How do they figure all this out?

According to GNS Science, four factors caused the intense shaking from the Port Hills fault earthquake; the energy released in the fault's rupture, the direction it was released, the "trampoline effect" between layers of sediment and the proximity of the fault to the city. More here
