- <LI type=disc>At 1251 on Tuesday 8 March, the New Zealand Flag was returned to full mast on all Government and public buildings to mark two weeks since the Christchurch earthquake. It is expected that the state of national emergency will continue to be extended for some weeks. See Minister's media release (7 March) <LI type=disc>The number of confirmed fatalities is 166 (at 1030hrs, 8 March). <LI type=disc>New Zealand Police have now (4:30pm March 8) identified 57 people who have died as a result of the earthquake, including foreign citizens. Names have been released on http://www.police.govt.nz/list-deceased<LI type=disc>Approximately 118 people are reported as missing (unaccounted for). This number will include many, or all, of the fatalities (at 1000hrs, 9 March) <LI type=disc>70,520 commercial and residential buildings have been assessed. <LI type=disc>Text messages are being sent out to Christchurch residents to keep them informed on welfare, public safety and useful information <LI type=disc>A total fire ban remains in place across Canterbury. No fire permits will be issued.
- Avoid all rivers, waterways, puddles or other surface water, and beaches between the Waimakariri River and Lyttelton Harbour, due to sewage contamination.
