CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand - Cheers erupted Wednesday as rescuers pulled a woman from a major building shattered in New Zealand's devastating earthquake, while the mood was dismal at another wreckage where police said all hopes of survivors were finished.

The confirmed death toll from Tuesday's magnitude-6.3 quake near the city of Christchurch rose to 75, and officials said it was almost sure to climb further. Some 300 people were listed as missing, as rescuers raced to find trapped survivors and imposed a strict nighttime curfew on the worst-hit areas.

Christchurch quake: Rockfall threat still strong, say experts

The earth under Canterbury is still shaking out the stress of the fault, with more than 70 aftershocks measured since Tuesday, four of them magnitude 5 or greater.

Seismologists said 4000 aftershocks had occurred since the September quake, but now the "clock had been reset" Cantabrians could expect months more of tremors.

Geologists have reported that the liquefaction in the city was worse than during last year's tremor.

Carter said health officials were now investigating the risk of disease, as 80 per cent of the city was still without water and sewerage systems. Around 60 per cent of the city now had power. Dairy giant Fonterra had supplied 34 tankers with 20,000 litre capacities to provide water at selected sites.

The liquifaction has destroyed both water and sewerage pipes. People in lower lying areas, specifically the eastern suburbs, have been flooded and now have bacteria laden silt through their homes. Without clean water to wash the chance of becoming ill is very high.

Work resumes at CTV site

Rescuers last night returned to the site of the CTV building to sift through the rubble despite police previously saying they were "100 per cent sure" there were no survivors after Tuesday's earthquake.

The site had been deemed too dangerous for rescuers with fears more of the building could collapse and they pulled out to focus on the PGG Building around 1.30pm yesterday.
However, police issued a release early this morning saying work at the site had removed and Civil Defence Minister John Carter later told media that Urban Search and Rescue crew had been able to return with equipment to secure the building.

Police stressed the work was a recovery operation as more survivors were not expected, but said the teams always remained hopeful.

Christchurch Police are urging people who are leaving the city to advise friends, family or neighbours that they have left and that there is no concern for their safety.

Superintendent Dave Cliff, Canterbury Police District Commander, said people may be ringing the missing persons lines, reporting people as missing when they are not. This diverts resources from the complex and time-consuming task of the search for missing people.

"If anyone previously reported as missing is found or makes contact with friends or family, Police ask that we are advised through the missing person lines."

Japan starts rescue operation

Rescuers continue working around the clock in quake-hit Christchurch and a Japanese team has joined in the efforts to find survivors.

New Zealand's government says over 70 people are confirmed dead from Tuesday's quake, and several hundred are missing. More than 400 people have been treated at hospitals.....

Japan's rescue team in NZ: misson is tough

The deputy chief of Japan's rescue team, now operating in Christchurch, has pledged that they will do all they can to save survivors, though aftershocks are hindering rescue operations.

Yoshihiro Katada told reporters on Thursday that the 66-member team and 3 sniffer dogs are working shifts around the clock. He said the team is using large construction machineries to remove concrete debris.
Commenting on the condition of the building where Japanese students were studying, Katada said the 6-story building has been totally destroyed......

Quake: Up to 238 missing, 76 dead

LATEST: Up to 120 people may be in the rubble of the CTV building and a further 22 bodies inside Christchurch's Cathedral Square, police say.

There are 238 people missing after Tuesday's 6.3 magnitude earthquake although some may have already left Christchurch before the disaster, police believe.

It comes as the official death toll from the quake rose to 76.

Police Minister Judith Collins today described the horrific conditions rescue workers face, with bodies being pulled "in ones and twos" from the rubble.

"We've got 76 at the morgue at the moment and more coming through.
"I've never seen anything like it."

The names of those killed and missing will be released later today, Prime Minister John Key said earlier.

Earthquake victims are being held at mortuaries at Christhchurch hospital and Burnham Military Camp while the coroner's office deal with the aftermath of so many dead in Christchurch's earthquake.

With the arrival of new search teams, a grid search of surrounding buildings has begun. The rescuers still believe people could be alive and are making a thorough search.

University of Canterbury students have spent the day digging out properties that have been covered with silt. I am very proud to say I have a daughter amongst the "uni army". Many people are wanting to leave the city and many are certain they won't be back.

So far 98 bodies have been recovered. The coroner has said that the bodies that have not been identified are being looked after. Someone is always with them.

Many sites have been set up to offer the people of Christchurch a home to live in. The sites are oversubscribed by thousands - of offers of accommodation from around the country. Further sites have been set up to organise transport to these new "homes".

Sydney (Australia), Feb 24 (EFE) .- The authorities today lifted New Zealand to 98 the death toll in the earthquake last Tuesday that struck the city of Christchurch, where the search continued for more than 200 people missing.

The hours passed without finding any more survivors under the mountains of jagged rubble of collapsed buildings in the hope of the members of rescue teams and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key.

"The loss of lives can be substantially larger than any of us ever dreamed," he told reporters after the chief minister that was mined during the day another 23 bodies.

Some of the recovered bodies were so mangled that identification will be fingerprinted and await the outcome of DNA testing, said local police chief Dave Cliff to state television.

In the official list of 226 missing include 46 students and teachers in a center for teaching English, which was located on the third floor of the building that housed the headquarters of Canterbury television channel, known for CTV and leaving only stones on stones.

The scholars have ruled that people living under all that pile of tons of debris from the CTV building, which fire crews already have removed at least 47 bodies and officials fear they are buried 60 to 120 victims of the collapse caused by the strong shaking.

In the ruins of Christchurch Cathedral, considered one of the most emblematic buildings in this city of 400,000 inhabitants, authorities believe they are to recover from 16 to 22 people who also give up for dead.

Other fatalities were found beneath the rubble of what was the building of the financial corporation Pyne Gould and several buildings demolished by the earthquake of 6.3 magnitude on the Richter scale that struck the population towards lunchtime.

"Two of the dead babies, one of five months and another nine months," said police chief told reporters in announcing the arrival of more bodies to the morgue of the city.

The Department of Public Health indicated that 164 people are hospitalized with serious injuries in different hospitals of the city, having treated 431 cases of emergency and dispensing care to 2,000 slightly injured.

A rescue efforts that took place some 400 members of the NZ teams, have joined 300 other specialists sent by the international community, including in neighboring Australia, Japan, Singapore and the United States and the United Kingdom, equipped with acoustic instruments accuracy and supported by trained dogs, according to official sources.

Most of the buildings are wrecked in central Christchurch, cordoned off by members of the security forces to prevent looting and accidents for the aftershocks of the earthquake that happen knock down some of the damaged buildings.

Civil protection authorities said that about 40 percent of the homes in the city, especially those located in the eastern suburbs, are still without power and 80 percent of the population remains without running water.

The government declared a state of emergency Wednesday after the prime minister said in a televised address that the quake had caused "death and destruction on an unimaginable scale."

Last September, an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude hit Christchurch and caused dozens of injuries and extensive damage to public infrastructure and buildings in the south.

New Zealand records about 14,000 earthquakes each year, from 20 percent meet or exceed 5 degrees on the Richter scale.

In 1968, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed three people on the west coast of South Island, but the most serious was the incident in 1931 in the city of Napier on the North Island, where 256 people lost their lives. EFE aus / mfr / wm

First earthquake victims identified

Police have released the names of the first four confirmed victims of the Christchurch earthquake on Tuesday 22 February.

They are:

Joseph Tehau Pohio, age 40, of Christchurch
Jaime Robert McDowell Gilbert, age 22, of Christchurch
Jayden Harris, aged 9 months, of Christchurch
Baxter Gowland, aged 5 months of Christchurch

No other names of deceased or missing persons are able to be released at the present time.

Superintendent Dave Cliff said in these four cases the process had reached the threshold of identification which includes a statement from the next of kin.

Police had been working as hard as possible on carrying out a Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) process on bodies which have been located.

"At present we have a total of 98 bodies," Supt Cliff said. "Identification of the remainder of these will be a long and complex process. In most cases, visual identification of these bodies is proving to be extremely difficult.

"We have a large team working through the list of those who have been reported missing by loved ones. At this stage we can confirm that we have 226 people listed as missing. Because of our inquiries and the likelihood that these missing people are believed to be in the most severely affected areas of Christchurch we hold serious concerns that they have not survived.

"This number may well grow higher, as there may be overseas nationals who have not been reported missing.

"We have been in touch with all the families of those reported missing, and the Police Family Liaison team have been briefing families this afternoon on all the information available to date. We will continue to provide information and support to the families."

The majority of the 98 confirmed deceased are expected to be included within the 226 missing, Supt Cliff said.

"We have been in discussion with the chief Coroner and have assessed the risks around releasing the names of the missing. As a result the Coroner is firm that we must continue with our process to ensure absolute certainty around identity."

"My plea is that if anyone has reported someone missing, and that person is now safe and well, or if a person knows they have been reported missing, please contact the Red Cross as soon as possible on 0800 733276."

Redcliffs suburb in Christchurch evacuated

Twelve streets behind Redcliffs Primary School have been evacuated tonight.

The residents were evacuated after cliffs in the area were deemed to be unstable.

The New Zealand Army assisted police with the evacuation, which started about 10pm.

Police say the residents left willingly and those who could not self-evacuate were helped by the army.

Residents have gone to welfare centres at Cowes Stadium and Pioneer Stadium.

30 Israelis unaccounted for after New Zealand earthquake

Thirty Israelis in New Zealand remain unaccounted for, Israel's consul in Wellington, Teddy Poplinger, said yesterday. He said there is particular concern for three or four of them who were seen in Christchurch at the time of the Tuesday's earthquake.

"We have a list of Israelis in the area, but we believe most of them were not in Christchurch at the time of the earthquake. We mainly want to make sure that they all contact their families," Poplinger said.
