Total of 68 students are residing in the hostel. Out of these, 18 students were affected. All the students were provided lunch with rice, fish curry, cabbage, thoran and theeyal at around 1 PM. After two hours , some were developed vomitting and stomach pain and all are referred to GH Trivandrum. After examination two were admitted and others were treated on OPD. May be due to insecticide poisoning from vegetables or other food grains. ADD BLOCK:Veliyanad Muttar, Muttar 12 0 24/04/2012 2012-05-04 14:03:32 826 Clinical presentations: 12 cases (8 female and 4 male) had presentation of loose watery stools at frequency 3 times in 24 hours. Most of the cases haddate of attack on 2542011. None of the cases reported had presentation of loose watery stools with severe dehydrations. Main source of drinking water in the ward VI is from public water supply. the wells in the area is not used for drinking water. Water authority of Thiruvalla provides water supply in the area. On interviewing the cases it was noticed that the water had change in color and taste on 22412 and they used it without boiling. Overhead tank is not cleaned and source could be inadequate chlorination of public water supply. Two Water samples collected from the ward and send for bacteriological testing . No stool samples taken since there is no clinical presentation of ADD with severe dehydration TA Grade I visited the ward on 28412.Intimation given to the water authority for superchlorination on 26412. Education class conducted on safe (boiled) water drinking and maintenance of personal and sanitary hygiene. Investigation Open The area under surveillance by DSU.

Food Poisoning Chempumpuram Block, PHC Thalavady Poomthuruthy sub centre, Thalavady Village 18 0 29/04/2012 2012-05-04 14:14:41 2316 Point source : feast distributed on marriage occasion held on 28th April, (ward 1 H.No.262) at Marthomite church, Vettuthodu,Thalavady. 18 cases were identified from the area with date of attack on 29th April. The cases had symptomatic presentation of vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The cases had food distributed from the catering unit at Thiruvalla on the wedding feast which comprises mainly of chicken fried rice and delicacies including ice- creams which were brought by the catering unit and prepared in the church hall for the feast. The balance of the food was taken back by the catering unit on 28th April. Stool samples collected from 4 cases randomly on 30th April(awaiting results) Water samples taken from the church area for bacteriological examinations. Local RRT formed on 29th April.The surveillance activity strengthened in the area. The water sources were super chlorinated in the ward1. ORS booth opened in the ward with distribution of ORS packets in each houses by the Local Health team. The stool sample collections were done by the MO and health team under guidance of DSU. Health education given in the ward regarding personal and sanitary hygiene. Investigation Open The surveillance strengthened in the area. Special focus on hotel and catering unit services in the area by the local health team. Information passed to the local health team from DSU regarding IEC and surveillance activities.

In and around Mariyayee house all the affected cases were seen. One Stool Samples was collected from the patient Baby 50F and sent for Bacteriological analysis to KAPV Medical College, Trichy and result was Vibrio Cholera Positive. Surveillance: All the field staff of the Block have been involved in the ADD surveillance from 05.05.12 and still continuing. Mobile Medical Team was instructed to conduct Medical Camp in this Village all the ADD cases were treated in the field. Chlorination: chlorination has been strengthened Disinfection: All the affected streets were disinfected and the garbage removal work has been done near the water sources. They were using water of a well for all purposes including drinking & cooking. The well is situated near (approx 60 fts) a nala which is full of aquatic flora. A total of six latrines (without Pit) are emptying its effluents directly into the nala which seems main cause of infection to concern well. One water sample was collected from the well after OT testing (Negative) and being send to State Health Institute, Lucknow for further microbiological examination. RRT of the district and PHC epidemic control team rushed to the affected area and OT testing done of all usable wells. Super chlorination was performed in all negative OT tested well. Chlorine tablets & ORS packets were also distributed. Health education provided to the habitants. Investigation Open District administration was communicated for safe & proper laterine arrangements.

Few presented with severe dehydration and some mild dehydration. First case reported on 28-4-2012 who attended a marriage party subsequently there is gradual rise of cases and sudden increase of no. of cases of diarrheal disease on 10-5-2012. Most of the people consumed drinking water from unprotected well. Seven Nos of the stool sample collected for Bacterial examination.Two nos. of the water sample collected for MPN test. All sample sent to SMCH, Microbiology Deptt. for examination. Result yet to received. Medical team from SMCH visited spot, render necessary medical treatment. Another Medical team constituted by SDM&HO,IC Harinagar BPHC also delaminated the cases and render medical treatment. Dr. Atanu Chakraborty,Asstt. Prof. Department of Microbiology,SMCH and DSO accompanied with Birendra Roy,Lab.Tech and DM visited the area. Stool sample were collected in Carry Blair Media under supervision of Dr. Chakraborty . PHE Deptt. supplying save drinking water to the affected area . All wells were disinfects by bleeching Power by the Garden authority. Occurrence of Cases are gradually decreasing. IEC activities initiated by the Public Health Staffs. RRT team started started outbreak investigation since 11-5-2012. Investigation Open Joint Director of Health Services Visited the area and observed the situation and assured all possible medical help from her side. She stress upon on supply of pure drinking water and proper hygienic care.

BPHC ic Sissiborgaon has been contacted and advised to do house to house survey in the village for detection of any other lying case and to take immediate measures for control. Situation being investigated by concerned BPHC. No new case has been reported after 16.05.12 Investigation Open Though the deaths at Civil Hospital was labeled as AES, the death might be due to Shigella dysentery and yet to be investigated and confirmed after reports of Survey.
