In the wake of seven mysterious deaths across two incidents in the Budhal area of Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, health authorities and local representatives are leaving no stone unturned. A team of medical experts has been deployed to investigate the alarming situation.

Amid seven mysterious deaths in two different incidents in the Budhal area of Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) Jammu deputed a team of medical experts to investigate the matter.

The team reached the Budhal village to conduct an epidemiological investigation. The team comprises Dr. Prem Lata, Medical Officer of Epidemiology at DHS Jammu, Dr. Simran Nag, State Epidemiologist for the Jammu Division, and Ajay, State Microbiologist of the IDSP Jammu Division.

Additionally, Vishal Patil, a Senior Pharmacist from the DHS Jammu, is also accompanying the team.

MLA Budhal Javed Iqbal Choudhary met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday and apprised him of the mysterious deaths in his area.

Principal GMC accompanied me to the patients that tests related to virology and toxicology at various stages of monitoring," the MLA said, adding, "I am in constant touch with Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Abhishek Sharma for regular monitoring of the evolving situation. It is my appeal to the local people that they should not panic but at the same time, they should remain careful about what they eat."

The investigation comes in response to alarming reports of unusual deaths in the district, and the health authorities are committed to determining the cause and preventing further incidents.

A seven-year-old girl died and her two elder brothers fell sick due to a suspected case of food poisoning in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Thursday, reports said.

The officials said three siblings were brought to Kotranka civil hospital from Badhal village of Khawas, where the seven-year-old Nazia Kousar breathed her last, while her elder brothers, Ishtiaq (9) and Ashfaq (11), were referred to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital for specialized treatment.

However, Ishtiaq also died during treatment at the GMC hospital.

The officials said Ruksar (12), who along with her mother Shamim Akhter was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jammu, died this afternoon. Ruksar's father, Fazal Hussain, and three siblings – Rabia Kouser (15), Farmana Kouser (12), and Rafter Ahmad (four)—had died on Sunday....

Mysterious illness as Rajouri death toll mounts to 8

With another child succumbing to a mysterious illness in Rajouri district, the death toll has risen to eight, prompting the authorities to set up a central team of experts to assist in investigating the cases and fatalities in the affected village.

Also, the administration has deployed a high-grade mobile laboratory in the affected area to address the situation.

Dr Narinder Singh Bhatial, Medical Superintendent of the Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, reported that the eighth victim, identified as Ashfaq Ahmad (12), was admitted to the Government SMGS Hospital in Jammu. His condition worsened on Wednesday, and he was transferred to GMC, where he was declared brought dead. In light of the rising death toll, the administration has deployed a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) mobile laboratory in Rajouri. The lab is equipped to handle outbreaks caused by highly infectious pathogens and plays a crucial role in early detection, rapid investigation and timely containment of diseases, ensuring public safety during such health emergencies.

The number of deaths from an unknown illness in Rajouri district has risen to nine, with a woman breathing her last today due to the mysterious disease, prompting authorities to order a probe to ascertain the cause of her death. Reports said the woman, a resident of Badhaal village, died after sudden medical complications with initial symptoms not resembling with earlier deaths. Last week, the death toll stood at eight, but on 23 December, Monday, another person died of an unknown disease, taking the number of deaths to 9.

The latest casualty due to this disease was 22-year-old Razeem Akhter, who was five months pregnant and had already lost three of her children—Ashfaq (12), Ishtiyaq (7), and Nazia (5)—to the same unknown disease. Akhter was first taken to the local hospital in Kotranka when her condition worsened, but later, she was shifted to the Government Hospital in Rajouri, where she succumbed on Monday. A post-mortem examination has been conducted to know the cause of her death.

What do we know?
Following the initial deaths on December 8, the investigation has confirmed that the disease was not food poisoning, despite initial concerns about it. Experts are currently investigating alternative causes of the illness instead. With seven deaths from one family and two from another, the disease has primarily impacted two families in the village.

In response to the growing number of cases, a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) mobile laboratory has been sent to Rajouri to speed up the testing and help determine the cause of the illness. A central team of experts has also been deployed to assist the local authorities in investigating the situation....

....The recent victim has been identified as Rajeem Akhtar. According to a report by Indian Express, Akhtar had already lost her children to the disease. A week before her death, she had taken her 3 children to the Government Medical College in Rajouri.

After their demise, Akhtar returned home on December 19 and had shown no symptoms of the disease. However, things took a turn for the worse and she died on Monday after her health deteriorated.....

Srinagar, Dec 24 : A mysterious disease has claimed yet another life in Budhal area of Rajouri district, taking the toll up to nine in the last 15 days.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a pregnant woman from Budhal area of Rajouri district became the ninth suspected victim of a mysterious illness.

Razeem Akhter, wife of Mohammad Rafiq, resident of Budhal Koteranka Rajouri, was five months pregnant.

He said that Razeem was brought to the local hospital at Kotranka. Her condition worsened and she was referred to Government Hospital in Rajouri where she died....

Officials said that a post-mortem examination has been conducted to determine the cause of her death....

It is pertinent to mention here that from December 8, 2024 up to now, a total 9 persons from two families including 7 children and a female have lost their lives but the exact cause of deaths could not be known till date.

Officials claim that teams have already been constituted at CHC Kandi, CMO office Rajouri and GMC Rajouri to ascertain the cause behind it.

They said that the case is under investigation and efforts are on to ascertain the cause of the deaths.

Meanwhile, the administration at GMC Rajouri has suspended five doctors pending enquiry.

They have been identified as Dr Veenu Bharti, Dr Neetu, Dr Shakir Ahmad Parry, Dr Shafkat Ulla and Dr Anif Saleem Rather while Dr Davinder Kumar and Dr Barinder Kumar have been directed to explain about the duties they performed and whether they informed the higher ups regarding deteriorating condition of patient and to submit their hourly round report.

The panic gripped some families, have shifted their children to other places to stay with their relatives.

Reports said that a woman, hailing from Baddaal village, died after sudden medical complications with initial symptoms not resembling with earlier deaths. They said the district administration has ordered a probe to ascertain the cause of her death.​...

Doctor attending upon her said that she was responding well to the treatment but all of a sudden she collapsed. The doctors could not get the clue behind her sudden death....



...A senior officer in the J&K Health and Medical Education department, however, could not give a satisfactory reply. He claimed that Medical teams are on the job and they have not submitted their report so far. He, however, claimed that this death of woman at Badaal today was different case than the previous one...

......According to sources, in all these deaths, the nervous system of the deceased has been attacked. In this, the deceased have complained of being unconscious and lethargic in the last time. Toxin can be the reason for the deaths, if it was a virus, others would also have been ill - Expert Doctor No official is saying anything in the cases of mysterious deaths in Baddal.

An expert senior doctor of GMC Jammu said that toxin can be the reason behind these deaths. In which it is suspected that some poisonous bacteria entered the human body through some food item, water etc., which later caused deaths.

If there was any complaint of virus, then the medical staff of the hospitals where the deceased went or other people who came in contact with them should have shown some symptoms, but this has not been seen. Only the above two families have been affected so far.

JAMMU, Dec 24: The Government of J&K UT today placed five doctors of Govt Medical College Rajouri under suspension after the death of a woman hailing from Badaal village of Khawas, in Budhal tehsil of Rajouri district on Monday.

Official sources said that the Government took serious note of the issue. Following directions from the higher authorities in the Health and Medical Education department, Principal of GMC Rajouri, Dr A S Bhatia today placed five doctors under suspension. He also sought explanation from several other staff members at GMC Rajouri.
Demonstrating a firm commitment to transparency and the high standards of medical care, Dr. Bhatia has initiated disciplinary measures and ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the any type of lapse in the medical care during patients’ stay in hospital.​....

..These doctors were on duty during the critical hours of the incident on December 22, 2024. Pending inquiry’s outcome, the suspended staff members have been attached to the office of the Medical Superintendent of Associated Hospital of GMC Rajouri.
GMC Principal, Dr Bhatia has sought detailed explanations from on-call doctors, ...

Nursing and support staff on duty, ... have also been directed to provide comprehensive reports on their roles and adherence to institutional protocols....

The deceased woman's husband, Muhammad Rafiq, said that my first three children have died, but the reason for their death is not known yet. On Sunday evening, we reached Medical College Rajouri where my wife was first kept in the emergency ward and given two bottles of glucose, one small and one large. After that, she was shifted to the women's ward.​
He said that the doctors did not provide proper treatment and did not show any seriousness in this matter. Due to which my wife died on Monday evening. My whole family is destroyed. My wife was absolutely fine, she did not have anything like what happened to my children on 12 December...

..Many expert teams from outside also came to Badal village to find out the reasons behind the deaths, but after staying here for three days, nothing was achieved and the teams returned. What kind of illness has struck Badal village that is still unknown.​
