Cloned cow with two human genes to produce breast milk similar to humans
An Argentine laboratory announced the birth of the first cloned cow with two human genes to produce a milk equivalent to breastmilk.
"A cloned cow, Rosita ISA is the first cattle born to two human genes that contain the proteins found in breast milk," revealed the the National Institute for Agricultural Technology (INTA).
Nicolas Mucci, responsible for one of three investigations conducted by INTA and Universidad Nacional de San Martin, told AFP that milk will protect babies and improve absorption of iron. "The goal is to improve the nutritional value of cow's milk by adding two human genes, the proteins lactoferrin and lysozyme," said another researcher, Adrian Mutt, National University of San Martin.
The calf was born on April 6 and within 10 months the researchers will be able to confirm that the proteins are present in the milk of Rosita, performing a simulation of pregnancy.
