Background. The impact of influenza infection on morbidity and mortality in the elderly population can be severe. Influenza vaccination is not very effective in this age group, which is potentially related to impaired nutritional status. We investigated the effect of a 7-month nutritional supplementation on antibody response to influenza vaccine in elderly people.

Methods. Nineteen subjects aged 65 years and older with a body mass index of 25 kg/m2 or less were studied. Subjects received a complete liquid nutrition supplement containing energy, vitamins, and minerals, including enhanced levels of antioxidants or noncaloric placebo drink for 7 months. Antibody titers to influenza strains A/Sydney/5/97 (SY), A/Beijing/262/95 (BE), and B/Yamanashi/166/98 (YA) before and 28 days after vaccination were measured. Age, gender, weight, height, serum albumin, serum prealbumin, hemoglobin, and serum vitamin E at baseline were registered.

Results. Mean fold increase upon vaccination for SY was significantly larger in the supplement group (2.76 ? 0.66) compared to the placebo group (1.91 ? 0.66). These differences were not observed for YA (1.73 ? 0.31 vs 1.19 ? 0.18) and BE (4.40 ? 2.63 vs 5.76 ? 3.34). For all three strains, there was no significant difference between groups in protective antibody levels (HI titer >=40) after vaccination.

Conclusions. We conclude that provision of a complete liquid nutrition supplement including enhanced levels of antioxidants may have a beneficial effect on antibody response to influenza vaccination in the elderly population. Further confirmation of these findings and their clinical consequences should be the subject of a larger study.

I don't want to read that all...

      What I'd like to know:

how many % less likely is an average elderly to catch flu
if he/she follows the nutritional advice ?
What does it cost ? (both for -say- one year)
      Your estimates ?
I'm interested in expert panflu damage estimates

Some nutritional drinks for seniors are made by Nestle. They are designed to be used under medical supervision. See the site below, and the ingredients include include Vitamin A, C, E, Bs, selenium, zinc, but no FOS or manufactured oils.

          See http://www.nestlenutrition.com/nutri...ly_product.htm

It's interesting to see their entire product line - for surgery recover, cancer, infants, Chrons, etc.

Here's a study of immunity enhancing results of a nutritional supplement, with the elderly benefitting most. They give ingredient quantites!!!

            http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...=pubmed_docsum

Effect of a mixture of micronutrients, but not of bovine colostrum concentrate, on immune function parameters in healthy volunteers: a randomized placebo-controlled study.
Unilever Food & Health Research Institute, Olivier van Noortlaan 120, NL-3133 AT, Vlaardingen, The Netherlands. danielle.wolvers@unilever.com

BACKGROUND: Supplementation of nutritional deficiencies helps to improve immune function and resistance to infections in malnourished subjects.

However, the suggested benefits of dietary supplementation for immune function in healthy well nourished subjects is less clear. Among the food constituents frequently associated with beneficial effects on immune function are micronutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and zinc, and colostrum. This study was designed to investigate the effects these ingredients on immune function markers in healthy volunteers.

METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, parallel, 2*2, placebo-controlled intervention study one hundred thirty-eight healthy volunteers aged 40-80 y (average 57 +/- 10 y) received one of the following treatments: (1) bovine colostrum concentrate 1.2 g/d (equivalent to approximately 500 mg/d immunoglobulins), (2) micronutrient mix of 288 mg vitamin E, 375 mg vitamin C, 12 mg beta-carotene and 15 mg zinc/day, (3) combination of colostrum and micronutrient mix, or (4) placebo. Several immune function parameters were assessed after 6 and 10 weeks. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance. Groups were combined to test micronutrient treatment versus no micronutrient treatment, and colostrum treatment versus no colostrum treatment.

RESULTS: Overall, consumption of the micronutrient mix significantly enhanced delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses (p < 0.05). Adjusted covariance analysis showed a positive association between DTH and age. Separate analysis of younger and older age groups indicated that it was the older population that benefited from micronutrient consumption.

The other immune function parameters including responses to systemic tetanus and oral typhoid vaccination, phagocytosis, oxidative burst, lymphocyte proliferation and lymphocyte subset distribution were neither affected by the consumption of micronutrients nor by the consumption of bovine colostrum concentrate.

CONCLUSION: Consumption of bovine colostrum had no effect on any of the immune parameters assessed. The micronutrient mix enhanced cellular immunity as measured by DTH, with an increased effect by incremental age, but did not affect any of the other immune parameters measured.

Although correlations between decreased DTH and enhanced risk of certain infection have been reported, it remains unclear whether and enhanced DTH response actually improves immune defense. The present data suggests that improvement of immune parameters in a population with a generally good immune and nutritional status is limited and that improvement of immune function in this population may be difficult.

Re: Nutritional formula improved immune profiles of seniors living in nursing homes. *!*

              summary:

              288 mg vitamin E, 375 mg vitamin C, 12 mg beta-carotene and 15 mg zinc/day,
enhanced "delayed-type hypersensitivity" proportional to age.
it remains unclear whether this actually improves immune defense

I'm assuming the latest study uses a new & improved (secret) formula!

That's what I was searching for when I found the Nestle site. I found similar drinks, but not yet with the ingredients cited in the study.

Unilever funded the study and I am certain they did it to further their own profit margin. In another study posted here last week lactoferrin was tested and found valuable. In any case, we do know that certain vitamins and micronutrients are indisputably valuable for seniors. They are also valuable for children and adults. Modern diets appear to be lacking in the following list of vitamins: B (especially folate), C & E, selenium, zinc, and in some areas vitamin D. The danger is self-medicating with possibly disastrous results. Our FDA has guidelines for the minimum daily requirements but not the optimum daily requirements for people of all ages, and health situations. When you average nutritional amounts you get average results. The research done over the last 8 years clearly shows that at least one segment of the population would benefit from increasing vitamins and micronutrients. I also am convinced that lactoferrin is beneficial to those with a damaged immune system regardless of whether the damage was caused by illness or longevity. Even if we do not know all of the components of the formula, we do know that seniors would benefit immensely from the list mentioned above. So too would most of the rest of us.
