Police and market controllers in a northern province seized 2,000 live pigeons that were transported illegally from China into Vietnam this week.
Such imports are banned, as the H5N1 bird flu has spread to almost two dozen provinces and cities in the Southeast Asian country.
A team of anti-environmental crime police officers and market controllers in Quang Ninh Province stopped a suspicious truck on Wednesday on National Highway 18A in the provincial city of Mong Cai for examination and found it was carrying pigeons weighing a total of 1.2 tonnes.
The truck?s driver, Vu Van Thien, hailing from northern Hai Duong Province, told the team that he had bought the animals without any documents in China and was transporting them to Vietnam for sale.
The team made a report to seize all the smuggled pigeons for incineration in accordance with applicable regulations.
