On Sunday [31 Jan 2010], the Nam Tra My General Hospital in the
central province of Quang Nam said they had admitted 25 people with
malaria over the past week [week of 25 Jan 2010] from Tra Tap Commune.

The local health agency found nearly 100 people affected with the
mosquito-borne infectious disease, but they had not approached the
hospital for treatment. Hospital staff said they had also found
patients in Nam Tra My District's other communes.

[Malaria is caused by parasites of the species _Plasmodium_. The
parasites are spread to people through the bites of infected
mosquitoes. Symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, headache, and
vomiting. Incubation period is 10 to 15 days. Left untreated, malaria
can quickly become life threatening by disrupting the blood supply to
vital organs. Key interventions to control malaria include prompt and
effective treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapies
(ACTs), use of insecticidal nets by people at risk and indoor
residual spraying with insecticide to control the vector mosquitoes
    (see <http://www.who.int/topics/malaria/en/>).

From the newswire above, some 125 people in the Nam Tra My Districts
had been ill with mosquito-borne infections disease. 25 patients from
Tra Tap commune had been hospitalized with malaria. About 100
additional ill people in other communes had not visited hospital for
treatment. This newswire is the 1st report of a malaria outbreak in
    Viet Nam in 2010.

As Viet Nam's Government recognized malaria as a national priority
after 1991, dramatic reductions in malaria mortality were found from
1992 to 1996. 3 malaria outbreaks with 152 fatalities were reported
in 1997, whereas 144 malaria outbreaks with 4646 fatalities were
reported in 1991 (for more details about malaria epidemiology in Viet
    Nam see
    <http://www.wpro.who.int/sites/mvp/epidemiology/malaria/vtn_profile.htm>).

According to World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional
Office (WPRO), there were 14 581 confirmed malaria cases with 20
malaria deaths in Viet Nam in 2007. Incidence rate was 0.17 per 1000
population and mortality rate was 0.02 per 100 000 population (see
    <http://www.wpro.who.int/sites/mvp/data/malaria/2007.htm>).

PRO/MBDS would greatly appreciate more information on the current
malaria situation in Viet Nam from knowledgeable sources.
