The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development?s Animal Health Department said in the provinces that had reported widespread outbreaks ? Ca Mau, Vinh Long and Bac Lieu in the Mekong delta ? there had been no poultry or waterfowl deaths in the last 21 days.
According to World Health Organisation norms, this period was sufficient to declare an area bird flu-free.
The department and other agencies are continuing with their tasks to ensure there are no further outbreaks. By last Friday, nearly 13 million poultry in the country had received bird flu shots.
Meanwhile, another epidemic too seems to be abating. No cattle had been reported with foot-and-mouth disease in the last 21 days, said the animal health agencies in Cao Bang, Lao Cai, and Phu Tho provinces in the north, and Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta.
Four other provinces ? Ha Giang and Lang Son in the north and Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Dong Nai in the south ? are approaching the WHO timeframe to be declared epidemic-free.
In HCM City, the People?s Committee has decided to compensate farmers for cattle struck by foot-and-mouth disease. It instructed district authorities to pay farmers VND10,000 per kilogramme for culling pigs and VND12,000 for cattle, goat, and sheep. ? VNS
