The US government is providing US$1.55 million for a new project to tackle bird flu in Vietnam and Laos.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) will work in collaboration with UN organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization to carry out surveillance and control activities against bird flu in both countries.
The activities include delivering key prevention messages and implementing strategies to minimize high risk behaviors.
In addition, the project staff will build the capacity of human and animal health workers in recognizing and reporting suspected cases, and develop new approaches for improving biosecurity on poultry farms.
More information on the project will be released soon.
Including this project, USAID has so far provided over $41 million for bird flu activities in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.
