  • 12 year old dies reportedly from flu Jan. 5 2014-NE Tennessee

I don't have any "official" news. However, friends have passed the word about their friend & classmate who has died from the flu. Apparently she was sick with the flu. On Sunday, she complained to family members that she couldn't breath. They drove her to the hhospital emergency room where she passed away. This young girl was one of my daughter's best friends. I admit I don't know her well & do not know her family. Since the kids have been out of school for the holidays & haven't returned due to the weather, my information is from social media. Taylor Smith's obituary was in the paper today but no mention about cause of death.

A child in Tennessee has died from flu complications, the Tennessee Department of Health said today.

This is the first confirmed pediatric flu death of the 2013-2014 flu season. The state tracks deaths among people younger than 18 and pregnant women, then reports those numbers to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention...

12-year-old Liberty Bell student remembered as ‘old soul’

January 7th, 2014 9:01 pm by Becky Campbell

The family of a 12-year-old Liberty Bell Middle School student will do today what no family can prepare for — memorialize their child’s life that ended too soon.

Taylor Scout Smith died Sunday from complications from pneumonia, but Kathy Glasgow Oakes, the sister of Taylor’s mother, Ellen Smith, said her niece’s spirit will live on. The youngster had become ill last week, was treated for the flu and then developed pneumonia.

            pH1N1 Genetic Sequence
            Sparsity

            for
            Tennessee

Only two genetic sequences are on file from Tennessee during 2013 with none after March. Those distant sequences suggest a circulation pattern similar to Texas and New Mexico.

              pH1N1 TamiFlu Resistance

The most recent Tennessee sequence, sampled from a 53 year old woman in March 2013, is Drug Resistant (TmX275 onto a very common Neuraminidase) and displays CrossClade tendencies with Emergent H7N9 homology on the Hemagglutinin.

The Neuraminidase lineage is common; The CrossClade Hemagglutinin lineage was widespread to geographies supporting avian inclusions, e.g. Brazil [EPI484739] and Costa Rica [EPI484980].

Texas communicated two TamiFlu Resistant cases in this week's Public Health report.
