Rhode Island 2010-2011 Season: Weeks 43-20 (No Activity)
Rhode Island 2010-2011 Season: Weeks 43-20 (No Activity)
Week 43: No Activity
ILI: 0.246%
The previous week the state lab reported its first confirmed case of influenza of the 2010-2011 influenza season (influenza A (H3) seasonal strain).
There has apparently been more testing done in Rhode Island since the number of postive samples is a lot higher, but in Week 3 they were 100% positive. It does appear that H3N2 is dominant and pH1N1 is increasing, but the %ILI has only risen modestly, so although the isolates chart seems to show a sharp increase in numbers, it appears to be more a function of the number of samples collected than a significant number of cases.

This strain is susceptible to Oseltamivir and Zanamivir. H3 viruses can cause severe disease with more complications and mortalitythan H1 strains. Vaccination of staff and residents remains the most effective means of controlling the spread of influenza; however outbreaks can still occur among vaccinated residents...
