The midstate will be among the last in the state to receive the swine/H1N1 flu shots, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The department placed its first order for the H1N1 nasal mist vaccine Wednesday, but it will focus the distribution of the first shipment in three targeted geographic areas experiencing the highest number of swine flu cases: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and north central regions.

The department is recommending children between the ages of 5 and 9 get vaccinated first, followed by college students in areas with heavy outbreaks.

About 2.5 million doses are expected to arrive in Pennsylvania by the end of October, said department of health spokeswoman Stacey Kriedeman. Although vaccines are notlikely to be available in central Pennsylvania in the next few weeks, Kriedeman said the department hopes the number of shipments would increase and the vaccine would be available here within the month.
