Butte area schools hit hard by H1N1, could close

Dozens of school students in Butte-Silver Bow and surrounding counties are calling in sick, prompting officials to consider closing the doors.
Butte area schools are being hit hard by the H1N1 virus, according to the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department. At East Junior High 140 to 150 students are absent with symptoms of the H1N1 flu. That is 27 percent of the student population, Butte-Silver Bow Assistant Health Officer Karen Billson.
So far, the H1N1 virus is the only known sickness circulating in the area, Billson said.
The student population in Kindergarten through 12th grade is down anywhere from 15 to 50 percent due to illness. If any more students call in sick or if staff members are absent then the schools will close, Billson said.
Schools in Anaconda-Deer Lodge, Granite and Beaverhead counties are also reporting a loss in students due to the virus.
