    Week 44, ending Nov 2, 2013

    For week 44 (10/27/2013-11/02/2013), the overall state ILI rate (4.4%) was comparable to last week (4.1%) and to this time last year (4.3%).

    During week 44, two districts (3 and 9) had an increase in ILI activity, while four districts (2, 6, 7 and 8) had a decrease. Three districts (1, 4 and 5) remained about the same.

    Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group. During week 44, the percentage of reported ILI cases was highest among individuals in the 5 to 24 years of age group.

    Flu Testing Reports
    From week 40 (week ending October 5th) through week 44 (week ending November 2nd), 18 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. All 18 samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1).
    The influenza cases were identified from the following counties: Forrest (1), Harrison (1), Jackson (11), Marion (1), Oktibbeha (2) and Washington (2).

    Two influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported nationally during week 44. Both occurred during the 2012-2013 influenza season. One was associated with an influenza A (H3) virus and one was associated with an influenza A virus for which no subtyping was performed. These deaths bring the total number of reported pediatric deaths for that season to 169. No influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported for the 2013-2014 season.
    Mississippi has had no influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported during this influenza season.

    National ILI Surveillance
    For week 44, the MS ILI rate (4.4%) continued to remain above the national ILI rate (1.4%).

    Week 46, ending Nov 16

    For week 46, the overall state ILI rate (5.3%) was comparable to last week(4.8%) and to this time last year (5.0%).

    During week 46, three districts (3, 4, and 8) had an increase in ILI activity, while two districts (2 and 6) had a decrease. Four districts (1, 5, 7, and 9) remained about the same.

    Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group. During week 46, the percentage of reported ILI cases was highest among individuals in the 5 to 24 years of age group.

    The 2013-14 state ILI rate was above the national, Region 4, and the state baselines for week 46.

    From week 40 (week ending October 5th) through week 46 (week ending November 16th), 28 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. All 28 samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1).

    Mississippi has had no influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported during this influenza season.

      The state ILI rate has been slowly, but steadily increasing since week 41. During week 47, the overall state ILI rate (5.9%) increased from last week (5.3%), but was lower than this time last year (6.6%).

      During week 47, five districts (1, 5, 6, 7, and 8) had an increase in ILI activity, while two districts (2 and 3) had a decrease. Two districts (4 and 9) remained about the same.

      Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group. During week 47, the percentage of reported ILI cases was highest among individuals in the 5 to 24 years of age group.

      The 2013-14 state ILI rate was above the national, Region 4, and the state baselines for week 47.

      From week 40 (week ending October 5th) through week 47 (week ending November 23rd), 38 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. All 38 samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1).

      Mississippi has had no influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported during this influenza season.

        The state ILI rate has been slowly, but steadily increasing since week 41. During week 48 (11/24/2013-11/30/2013), the overall state ILI rate (5.9%) increased from last week (5.0%), but was lower than this time last year (6.7%).

        During week 48, four districts (1, 2, 4, and 5) had an increase in ILI activity, while three districts (3, 6, and 8) had a decrease. Two districts (7 and 9) remained about the same.

        Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group.However,during week 48, the percentage of reported ILI cases was highest among individuals in the 0-4 years of age group.

        The 2013-14 state ILI rate was above the national, Region 4, and the state baselines for week 48.

        From week 40 (week ending October 5th) through week 48 (week ending November 30th), 46 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. All 46 samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1).

        One influenza-associated pediatric death was reported nationally during week 48. This death was associated with a 2009 H1N1 virus and occurred during week 47 (week ending November 23rd). Three influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported for the 2013-2014 season.

          During week 49, four districts (1, 3, 6, and 7) had an increase in ILI activity, while two districts (2 and 9) had a decrease. Three districts (4, 5, and 8) remained about the same.

          Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group. During week 49, the percentage of reported ILI cases continued to be highest among individuals in the 5-24 years of age group.

          From week 40 (week ending October 5th) through week 49 (week ending December 7th), 51 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. All 51 samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1).

          Mississippi has had no influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported during this influenza season.

            The state ILI rate had been slowly, but steadily increasing since week 41. However, for the past three weeks, the state ILI rate has held constant around 6%. During week 50, the overall state ILI rate (6.2%) was comparable to last week (6.0%), but was lower than this time last year (8.5%)

            During week 50, four districts (2, 3, 4, and 7) had an increase in ILI activity, while four districts (1, 5, 6, and 8) had a decrease. One district (9) remained about the same.

            Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group. During week 50, the percentage of reported ILI cases continued to be highest among individuals in the 5-24 years of age group.

            Flu Testing Reports: From week 40 through week 50, 56 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. Fifty-five (55) of the samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1). One sample was identified as influenza A (subtype not performed).

              The state ILI rate has been slowly, but steadily increasing since week 41. During week 51 (12/15/2013-12/21/2013), the overall state ILI rate (7.6&#37 increased from last week (6.6%), but was lower than this time last year (11.1%).

              Four districts (1, 3, 4, and 7) had an increase in ILI activity, while four districts (2, 6, 8 and 9) had a decrease. One district (5) remained about the same.

              Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group. During week 51, the percentage of reported ILI cases continued to be highest among individuals in the 5-24 years of age group.

              STD 70 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. Sixty-eight (68) of the samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1). Two samples were identified as influenza A (subtype not performed).

              The 2013-14 state ILI rate was above the national, Region 4, and the state baselines for week 51.

              National and Mississippi Pediatric Mortality Surveillance
              One influenza-associated pediatric death that occurred during the 2012-2013 season was reported to CDC during week 51 and was associated with an influenza B virus. Four influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported for the 2013-2014 season. Mississippi has had no influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported during this influenza season.

                The state ILI rate has been slowly, but steadily increasing since week 41. During week 52, the overall state ILI rate (7.9&#37 was comparable to last week (7.7%), but was lower than this time last year (11.2%).

                During week 52, four districts (2, 4, 8, and 9) had an increase in ILI activity, while two districts (3 and 7) had a decrease. Three districts (1, 5, and 6) remained about the same.

                Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group. During week 52, however, the percentage of reported ILI was highest among individuals in the 0-4 years of age group.

                From week 40 through week 52, 80 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. Seventy-seven (77) of the samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1). Three samples were identified as influenza A (subtype not performed).

                Two influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported to CDC during week 52. One death was associated with a 2009 H1N1 virus and occurred during week 51 (week ending December 21st) and one was associated with an influenza A virus for which no subtyping was performed and occurred during week 50 (week ending December 14th). Six influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported for the 2013-2014 season. Mississippi has had one influenza-associated pediatric death reported during this influenza season. *** This not listed on the CDC report or the MMWR report for week 52 but was reported in week 01

                  During week 01, the overall state ILI rate (7.5%) decreased from last week(8.0%) and lower than this time last year (8.1%). For week 01, the MS ILI rate continued to remain above the national ILI rate (4.4%).

                  Since week 35, the percentage of reported ILI cases has been highest among those in the 5-24 years of age group. During week 01, however, the percentage of reported ILI was highest among individuals in the 0-4 years of age group.

                  Since wk 40, 103 positive influenza samples were identified by MSDH. Eighty-nine (89) of the samples were identified as influenza A (2009 H1N1). Thirteen samples were identified as influenza A (subtype not performed) and one was identified as influenza B.
